The thing I absolutely adore about Z Broly is he is like a Reverse King Arthur story. We always have stories of the "Chosen One" being this wonderful, educated, peaceful, benevolent purehearted person who uses their strengths for everyones benefit, and yet Broly to the Saiyan species *IS* the Chosen One. He *IS* the one and only *Legendary* Super Saiyan, the one they have waited 1000 years for... and he's *a demented, cruel, sadistic psychopath who uses his power and strength for the pure and sole enjoyment he gains from bloodshed and nothing else.* Bro is literally the *ANTICHRIST* of Dragonball Z. In many ways, he is a representation of what Vegeta and Goku could be if they followed their forefathers instincts. He is a "Perfect Saiyan".
He doesn't say much in the second movie but does have a few normal lines. I just remember him saying "kakarot" when waking up and hearing Goten, SEEING Goten for the first time cause he looks like Goku, and screaming it when he dies when Goku just shows up for a second to blast him into the sun. Mainly appropriate times to say the name really.
After TFS made their z movie list and ranked it last i had to see if i was tweaking cause I hated Bio Broly. I think they are both competing for ass but if I liked 18 trolling Mr. Satan and Krillin doing Krillin like TFS did more than I do I could see it being better Bio Broly isn't even Broly and the one shaman dude is actually just a whole bitch
I think what ruined Z Broly for me were the sequels to this movie and the video games. Where he only says either "Kakorot!" or "Die!". In this movie he is pretty cool honestly.

Man you are really hurting your viewing experience by not listening to the american soundtrack. The hard rock soundtracks helped define these movies, without them the tone seems bland.
Facts. The Rock music really made the old Z movies so damn good🔥. They did so well fitting it into the movies💯. And you can tell it was awesome because the Japanese tried making their own rock soundtrack for the Resurrection F movie
30:13: Its not technically the punch that kills him. Broly technically explodes from having too much power that it consumes him and explodes him from within. In the anime (you can check it on youtube) Vegeta states how the Legendary Super Saiyan form consumes and explodes you from within if you dont control your rage and expel your power quickly enough. The punch just opened him up for that to happen it. Also thats why Vegetas the only one whos scared of him throughout the movie. Hes the only one who knows about the saiyan legend truly(Paragus even mentions it). Hes basically saiyan religious and saiyan Jesus just said run ya hands.

So hot take but contrary to what alot of people say I don't think Vegeta is out of character here. If anything I think it's part of his character development. Any time prior to Buu if Vegeta ran into someone who was CLEARLY AND SIGNIFICANTLY stronger than him, he sorta melted down and went panic mode. He lost his mind when the Ginyu force first showed up, until he got a few zenkai boosts even the idea of coming across frieza was enough for him to nope the fuck outta there. Once that's over he's bit better where he's still CLEARLY hesitant and worried at the prospect of fighting King cold and Frieza. After getting his royal ass handed to him by Cell he wasn't bitching out but he clearly had ZERO intention to fight Cell and for the first time actually waited for Goku to show up because he knew he did not have that fight. Buu saga he gets better where he fully intends to die fighting Buu. He only really goes back to freaking out when faced with someone stronger when he comes across Beerus and he only breaks outta that once Bulma gets slapped. My point is he has multiple points in the series where he realizes he's powerless, gives up, then crashes out because of Xyz.
All you're saying is that he's capable of panicking and later on learned to stay out of some fights where he learned he was outclassed. None of those examples does that justify writing vegeta like that in the movie. Even when panicking against stronger opponents he still FIGHTS them from the start. Its not that he just gave up, he gave up without even trying. Even when severely outclassed by freeza and cell vegeta didn't drop on all fours without even throwing a single punch and allowed picollo to pick him up by his hair and hold him like a dead rabbit. Trunks, gohan and picollo are the ones who are way more likely to stand back and miss 80% of the fight only to jump in at the last minute and get pummeled anyways, not vegeta.

I don't really think broly needs that complex of a character. Frieza wasn't very complex, neither was Cell. Broly is just an unhinged lunatic which is what made people like him. Meh. I think Z Broly (In a more leveled soundtrack sense) would have a more experimental sound. Like piano, but with weird crunchy basses or something. He's supposed to be this impended doom, not an edge lord. Not saying the Japanese soundtrack is any better, but for me, Super Broly has a better theme than Broly. Rage and Sorrow (Broly's main song throughout the movie) perfecly captures his character. Z Broly is supposed to be more "Violent" so a more unique and electronic song would fit Imo. Take Destruction from DBZ (Faulconer ost) for example, that fits Broly, even if it's not his theme.

Thing about Broly was this: His trauma was his source of strength AND his only weakness. He got punched right where he was stabbed as a child. His power was overflowing and one compromising blow to his body was enough to release all of that energy through his wound. It destroyed him from the inside out. Goku is a perfect opposite of Broly. He was hit on the head as a child and forgot his trauma and because of that, he is humble. That humility allows him to learn and grow from every L he takes.

I haven't watched the original Broly movie in forever, but watching it now kinda makes me see Broly's backstory in a new light. I feel like Broly doesn't have beef with Goku simply because he cried, but due to the fact that it's stated that he was born with the power level of 10000, but was made to cry by the wailing of a Saiyan that was born with a power level of 2. Broly was already a crash out, so I see it more like upon discovering the fact that baby Kakarot made him cry with such a massive power gap between them in his favor, he felt he had to go against the "bitch made" allegations, thus wanting smoke with Goku
The reason broly hates goku is bc the first time he’s ever experience fear/pain (the stabbing) was when he was feeling gokus energy, this is how ptsd works. Example: if a song plays during a car crash, the victim of that crash will feel the same fear whenever that song plays. That was the only time broly had to fear for his life. So basically Goku is broly’s grim reaper, and his reaction to goku’s energy isn’t one out of anger, it’s one out of fear. And I know it’s goku’s energy bc the Japanese dub points to that, and we can see them having an aura off when they first meet. If goku dies He won’t have to fear death, that’s why gokus the top of brolys list

Fun fact: Despite the fact people say he hates Goku due to the crying he actually doesn’t, in the Japanese Dub of the Z Broly movie Paragus explained that Broly actually sensed Goku’s power when he first arrived on the trap planet/New Planet Vegeta (Specifically in the scene where they were sizing each other up and everything faded to black except for them and their auras.) and that caused his saiyan instincts to go out of control which made him see Goku as a powerful opponent he wanted to fight and kill, the crying had nothing to do with it. He says quote, “Could it be Kakarrot? Does this mean that Broly’s instincts as a saiyan have been awakened by Kakarrots power, and he is starting to overcome my mind control?” Also in the JP dub he only knows Goku’s saiyan name because Vegeta said it right in front of Broly. Broly also only starts remembering Goku right when he is defeated.

He most likely KNOWS this is the same person because he remembered his ki or just power level, this is why broly seems more fearful of him in his first encounters, he looks nervous because hes remembering that ptsd. and your misunderstanding the most important part broly HATES vegeta, paragus outright states this, but since vegeta is literally shitting his pants at the sight of broly, broly does not have to worry about it in the slightest, the only thing that causes him pain at the moment of his transformation is goku, because he reminds him of his trauma and that causes a reaction out of broly, he wants to torment and dismantle goku to get past his trauma

Everyone so distracted by Broly, Paragus's ridiculous plan goes right over our heads. He built a fake kingdom, amassed an army, and drags his LSSJ son around just to keep Vegeta on a planet taht will eventually get hit by a comet and hopes Vegeta doesn't just leave or notice the comet coming his way. Then, when he gets found out, he reveals his entire plan with zero back-ups and I guess...Prays Vegeta doesn't obliterate his atoms? He had no intention of letting Broly go berserk, but what else was he possibly going to do? Also I love how Goku says "now the real fight begins" right before he one-taps Broly. Goku you can't just lose the whole time and then say that doesn't count until you start winning.
I don't think my problem with Broly is his character. While I say that I prefer Super Broly and think he's more complex, that does not mean that I think he's this Super deep character or that just cause one is more complex than the other that automatically makes them better. MY problem with Z Broly is and has always been the narrative centering in on our boy Kakarot. I do *not* care what reason in particular Broly is focused on Goku. His tears, those tears being an association to his trauma, him "analyzing Goku as a strong opponent". Goku should not be his target. This should be a Vegeta story first and foremost or at least have Broly go after Vegeta instead of him on his knees for half the movie not because "oh, I need my Vegeta moments" but because his bloodline is responsible for Broly and Paragus' near death. It quite literally makes the most sense and even has parallels. Vegeta III wanted Broly executed so now Paragus wants Vegeta IV gone. I will say though, Z Broly is cooler, that'll probably never change for me.
So you gotta remember that Broly was an infant. Infant brain with an infant's memory. He was frustrated with goku, sure, but then all of that other trauma right after could easily be blended together. He could've thought Goku was the reason he got stabbed. We also know that the super saiyan transformation messes with their psyche and he was basically born as a super saiyan. His motivations are definitely more complex than it seems I think.

Broly didn't get entertaining to me till he destroyed his father's mind control device and get to crash out as "The Legendary Super Sayian". I do agree that the resolution of goku getting a crazy plot buff against a monster that was mopping his whole crew, not even a scratch on broly but he gets one tapped? Spirit Bomb would of been so believable here because of Gohan calling him pure evil. Broly got a cool design, idk if I can't call these fights but amazing beat down, and out of pocket lines. Sadly he peaked at his first movie and he got reduced to....Kakarot. Honestly I think peoples undying love for the crashout baby is their perspective of what a sayian would be portrayed to be with that level of power when they were considered savages by nature.

Giant tirade aside though. Broly is a fking Saiyan. A Saiyan that unconsciously; if not instinctively; tapped into his power as a baby. If yall have a problem remembering, Goku hit his head as a kid and was docile. He had a power level of 2. Then he saw a full moon then became this big ape thing that caused massive havoc wherever it went. He got stronger instantly but consequently got very aggressive in the same timespan. I'd say it's because of the Oozaru's base nature if not for the fact that Vegeta as an Oozaru was nowhere near as wild as Goku *or* Gohan when they did. And then we have Super Saiyan where Goku verbally expressed to his son the sheer difficulty he had in just controlling himself from the pure rage he feels from awakening this power, something; once again; mirrored by Gohan, both gaining instant jumps in power consequently. Broly literally experienced death once and woke up to an exploding world as a *baby.* Inform me of how he's going to be have any other emotion beyond the extreme within every waking second until he somehow falls asleep. The man himself even says in the sub "my ki is rising. It's overflowing" before venting in order to keep it from overwhelming him. Because he's a f*cking Saiyan. His father couldn't actually do anything about the guy save for suppressing his ki, Ki being "energy" sure but in the Buddhism the show is *obviously* built on shows that energy to be derived from the spirit. Hence the "Spirit Bomb" comprising the *energies* of sentient life. The spirit is entirely linked to the mental state of the host. So if you suppress someone's Ki by force, don't you think that would task the person's mind over the course of time if it's done repeatedly? Why else would Broly say nothing beyond the focus of what's irritating him? Irrational? Yes. Talk to baby Broly and tell him that, I bet he won't hear you from all that roaring he was doing when Vegeta was blowing up. Paragus tried. He wound up getting his son a tiara for his quinciniera (spelt wrong) instead. And then we get Second Coming where he for some reason only says one word for the majority of his presence there, then slow comes around to saying more words. Almost like he has brain damage or something. I mean it's not like his whole body crumbled after Goku bust his chest open before combusting spontaneously at the end of his debut or anything. Then barely recovers *SOMEHOW* with 0 assistance from anyone whatsoever. We're mocking the guy's ability to string sentences after having his brain/spirit fked for an extended period of time after barely being able to contain his own strength which was already driving him mad cuz of what he is *on top of the thing that woke him up into an unmitigated rage as a fking baby to begin with* which came to a close with him...*losing the ability to stop himself from destroying his own body courtesy another man's fist.* Gee. It really is a conundrum we have on our hands as to why he came back how Gohan described Super Buu. Mm. Anyway, there you go. Dragon Ball by itself provides the answer for Broly's story right there. I'm not quite saying that's the reason for certain points in the movie, but I wouldn't be surprised if they thought that folks were warming up to the deeper concepts of the soul, enough to make a character that though evil was a mentally worn then broken man when he debuts. Which Toriyama, to my knowledge, never tried before. Heck, the movie wasn't even his idea. The problem with that assumption is that you'd be expecting the core audience of a series that's; like you said; only ever about throwing hands and pen measuring contests to have the patience to want to pick up, nevermind look into, those subtle call backs to established lore and even the culture behind it that; for laziness' sake; was being phased out. The problem is primarily how his beef is with Goku instead of with Vegeta. Paragus literally tells Vegeta how much he and Broly hates his family. Vegeta’s family is the entire reason why Paragus and Broly almost fucking died too. Then Second Coming and Bio Broly were obvious attempts at trying to capitalize the popularity that the first Broly movie had gotten but failed due to how the first ended and how the second one began imo. Idk how Broly goes from exploding into millions of pieces in a whole other planet to somehow arriving on earth with his body fully intact without any assistance at all? Would’ve made so much more sense if someone with a desire to destroy the saiyans wished for Broly to be back. Again Broly as a character isn’t necessarily a problem but there are a lot of reasons the writers of Toei decided to bring Broly back with a different approach to his story

presence Broly has flare ups naturally like when he destroyed the south galaxy at the start of the movie *the 4 galaxies are actually quarants of the universe by the way so that means broly just blew up 1/4 of the entire living realm while supressed* He gets mad when goku gets in front of him and gives him that challenging look Broly is like the alpha wolf he dosent like getting challenged by those below him It pissed him off Also to explain broly not speaking much He is a quiet and reserved man, he only speaks proudly and loudly when he is legendary super sayain because his mind control has broken and he has gained full access to his abilities and isnt being restricted by the crown He cant say or do much when the crown is on him because it is constantly fighting him internally making saying much very difficult He is angry and he is having to fight the power restrainer When he turns into the legendary super sayain his shyness and calmness is gone And ontop you may ask Why dosent he hate vegeta Well he could barely see while he was a baby and ontop of that Vegeta wasnt the one standing up to him later in life on new planet vegeta Vegeta never spoke to him nor cried Paragus might have told broly but broly dosent care that much He does what his father asks and he dosent really seem to care about Vegeta Even when vegeta orders him around he isn't trying to get up in brolys face super sayains shooting a combined energy blast together and even then he is winning until they break through his defense when trunks interrupts Z Broly is in my opinion the better broly and i kinda told throughout time That raging beast who would destroy everything he touched A sadistic monster Paragus is son was lost to the beast He felt leaving him to die was far more merciful then letting him live with his lost self *in his opinion* Super broly same thing at the start minus taking a knife in brolys case and a beam in paragus is case But paragus kills his companion so broly and him could survive If he didnt love broly then he would have just killed broly so he could have all the food for himself His shock collar is arguably crueler then Z paragus is restrainer But its also the only way to keep broly from losing it and destroying everything When broly goes super sayain he actually dosent leave and worries for broly till frieza kills him You could argue Super Paragus is actually a better dad then Z broly because he never tried to leave Both neither are horrible parents They are flawed but not horrible They did their bests with sons that were impossible to keep contained with universe threatening power

30:13: Its not technically the punch that kills him. Broly technically explodes from having too much power that it consumes him and explodes him from within. In the anime (you can check it on youtube) Vegeta states how the Legendary Super Saiyan form consumes and explodes you from within if you dont control your rage and expel your power quickly enough. The punch just opened him up for that to happen it.

Any time prior to Buu if Vegeta ran into someone who was CLEARLY AND SIGNIFICANTLY stronger than him, he sorta melted down and went panic mode. He lost his mind when the Ginyu force first showed up, until he got a few zenkai boosts even the idea of coming across frieza was enough for him to nope the fuck outta there. Once that's over he's bit better where he's still CLEARLY hesitant and worried at the prospect of fighting King cold and Frieza. After getting his royal ass handed to him by Cell he wasn't bitching out but he clearly had ZERO intention to fight Cell and for the first time actually waited for Goku to show up because he knew he did not have that fight.
Buu saga he gets better where he fully intends to die fighting Buu. He only really goes back to freaking out when faced with someone stronger when he comes across Beerus and he only breaks outta that once Bulma gets slapped. My point is he has multiple points in the series where he realizes he's powerless, gives up, then crashes out because of Xyz.

None of those examples does that justify writing vegeta like that in the movie. Even when panicking against stronger opponents he still FIGHTS them from the start. Even when severely outclassed by freeza and cell vegeta didn't drop on all fours without even throwing a single punch and allowed picollo to pick him up by his hair and hold him like a dead rabbit. Trunks, gohan and picollo are the ones who are way more likely to stand back and miss 80% of the fight only to jump in at the last minute and get pummeled anyways, not vegeta.

Meh. I think Z Broly (In a more leveled soundtrack sense) would have a more experimental sound. Like piano, but with weird crunchy basses or something. He's supposed to be this impended doom, not an edge lord. Not saying the Japanese soundtrack is any better, but for me, Super Broly has a better theme than Broly. Rage and Sorrow (Broly's main song throughout the movie) perfecly captures his character. Z Broly is supposed to be more "Violent" so a more unique and electronic song would fit Imo. Take Destruction from DBZ (Faulconer ost) for example, that fits Broly, even if it's not his theme.

Thing about Broly was this:
His trauma was his source of strength AND his only weakness. He got punched right where he was stabbed as a child. His power was overflowing and one compromising blow to his body was enough to release all of that energy through his wound. It destroyed him from the inside out. Goku is a perfect opposite of Broly. He was hit on the head as a child and forgot his trauma and because of that, he is humble. That humility allows him to learn and grow from every L he takes.

I haven't watched the original Broly movie in forever, but watching it now kinda makes me see Broly's backstory in a new light. I feel like Broly doesn't have beef with Goku simply because he cried, but due to the fact that it's stated that he was born with the power level of 10000, but was made to cry by the wailing of a Saiyan that was born with a power level of 2. Broly was already a crash out, so I see it more like upon discovering the fact that baby Kakarot made him cry with such a massive power gap between them in his favor, he felt he had to go against the "bitch made" allegations, thus wanting smoke with Goku
The reason broly hates goku is bc the first time he’s ever experience fear/pain (the stabbing) was when he was feeling gokus energy, this is how ptsd works. Example: if a song plays during a car crash, the victim of that crash will feel the same fear whenever that song plays. That was the only time broly had to fear for his life. So basically Goku is broly’s grim reaper, and his reaction to goku’s energy isn’t one out of anger, it’s one out of fear. And I know it’s goku’s energy bc the Japanese dub points to that, and we can see them having an aura off when they first meet. If goku dies He won’t have to fear death, that’s why gokus the top of brolys list

Fun fact: Despite the fact people say he hates Goku due to the crying he actually doesn’t, in the Japanese Dub of the Z Broly movie Paragus explained that Broly actually sensed Goku’s power when he first arrived on the trap planet/New Planet Vegeta (Specifically in the scene where they were sizing each other up and everything faded to black except for them and their auras.) and that caused his saiyan instincts to go out of control which made him see Goku as a powerful opponent he wanted to fight and kill, the crying had nothing to do with it. He says quote, “Could it be Kakarrot? Does this mean that Broly’s instincts as a saiyan have been awakened by Kakarrots power, and he is starting to overcome my mind control?”
Also in the JP dub he only knows Goku’s saiyan name because Vegeta said it right in front of Broly. Broly also only starts remembering Goku right when he is defeated.

yeah this movie was underrated and z broly had a personality but he was more of a merciless killer and that's about it but that's just my opinion.
First of all I think broly's reasoning is somewhat misunderstood here. Goku's crying triggers broly's ptsd to his trauma. He most likely KNOWS this is the same person because he remembered his ki or just power level, this is why broly seems more fearful of him in his first encounters, he looks nervous because hes remembering that ptsd. and your misunderstanding the most important part broly HATES vegeta, paragus outright states this, but since vegeta is literally shitting his pants at the sight of broly, broly does not have to worry about it in the slightest, the only thing that causes him pain at the moment of his transformation is goku, because he reminds him of his trauma and that causes a reaction out of broly, he wants to torment and dismantle goku to get past his trauma

Everyone so distracted by Broly, Paragus's ridiculous plan goes right over our heads. He built a fake kingdom, amassed an army, and drags his LSSJ son around just to keep Vegeta on a planet taht will eventually get hit by a comet and hopes Vegeta doesn't just leave or notice the comet coming his way. Then, when he gets found out, he reveals his entire plan with zero back-ups and I guess...Prays Vegeta doesn't obliterate his atoms? He had no intention of letting Broly go berserk, but what else was he possibly going to do?
Also I love how Goku says "now the real fight begins" right before he one-taps Broly. Goku you can't just lose the whole time and then say that doesn't count until you start winning.

I don't think my problem with Broly is his character. While I say that I prefer Super Broly and think he's more complex, that does not mean that I think he's this Super deep character or that just cause one is more complex than the other that automatically makes them better. MY problem with Z Broly is and has always been the narrative centering in on our boy Kakarot. I do *not* care what reason in particular Broly is focused on Goku. His tears, those tears being an association to his trauma, him "analyzing Goku as a strong opponent". Goku should not be his target. This should be a Vegeta story first and foremost or at least have Broly go after Vegeta instead of him on his knees for half the movie not because "oh, I need my Vegeta moments" but because his bloodline is responsible for Broly and Paragus' near death. It quite literally makes the most sense and even has parallels. Vegeta III wanted Broly executed so now Paragus wants Vegeta IV gone. I will say though, Z Broly is cooler, that'll probably never change for me.

So you gotta remember that Broly was an infant. Infant brain with an infant's memory. He was frustrated with goku, sure, but then all of that other trauma right after could easily be blended together. He could've thought Goku was the reason he got stabbed. We also know that the super saiyan transformation messes with their psyche and he was basically born as a super saiyan. His motivations are definitely more complex than it seems I think.

Broly didn't get entertaining to me till he destroyed his father's mind control device and get to crash out as "The Legendary Super Sayian". I do agree that the resolution of goku getting a crazy plot buff against a monster that was mopping his whole crew, not even a scratch on broly but he gets one tapped? Spirit Bomb would of been so believable here because of Gohan calling him pure evil. Broly got a cool design, idk if I can't call these fights but amazing beat down, and out of pocket lines. Sadly he peaked at his first movie and he got reduced to....Kakarot. Honestly I think peoples undying love for the crashout baby is their perspective of what a sayian would be portrayed to be with that level of power when they were considered savages by nature.

Broly is a fking Saiyan. A Saiyan that unconsciously; if not instinctively; tapped into his power as a baby.
If yall have a problem remembering, Goku hit his head as a kid and was docile. He had a power level of 2. Then he saw a full moon then became this big ape thing that caused massive havoc wherever it went. He got stronger instantly but consequently got very aggressive in the same timespan. I'd say it's because of the Oozaru's base nature if not for the fact that Vegeta as an Oozaru was nowhere near as wild as Goku *or* Gohan when they did.
And then we have Super Saiyan where Goku verbally expressed to his son the sheer difficulty he had in just controlling himself from the pure rage he feels from awakening this power, something; once again; mirrored by Gohan, both gaining instant jumps in power consequently.
Broly literally experienced death once and woke up to an exploding world as a *baby.* Inform me of how he's going to be have any other emotion beyond the extreme within every waking second until he somehow falls asleep. The man himself even says in the sub "my ki is rising. It's overflowing" before venting in order to keep it from overwhelming him. Because he's a f*cking Saiyan. His father couldn't actually do anything about the guy save for suppressing his ki, Ki being "energy" sure but in the Buddhism the show is *obviously* built on shows that energy to be derived from the spirit. Hence the "Spirit Bomb" comprising the *energies* of sentient life. The spirit is entirely linked to the mental state of the host. So if you suppress someone's Ki by force, don't you think that would task the person's mind over the course of time if it's done repeatedly? Why else would Broly say nothing beyond the focus of what's irritating him? Irrational? Yes. Talk to baby Broly and tell him that, I bet he won't hear you from all that roaring he was doing when Vegeta was blowing up. Paragus tried. He wound up getting his son a tiara for his quinciniera (spelt wrong) instead.
And then we get Second Coming where he for some reason only says one word for the majority of his presence there, then slow comes around to saying more words. Almost like he has brain damage or something. I mean it's not like his whole body crumbled after Goku bust his chest open before combusting spontaneously at the end of his debut or anything. Then barely recovers *SOMEHOW* with 0 assistance from anyone whatsoever. We're mocking the guy's ability to string sentences after having his brain/spirit fked for an extended period of time after barely being able to contain his own strength which was already driving him mad cuz of what he is *on top of the thing that woke him up into an unmitigated rage as a fking baby to begin with* which came to a close with him...*losing the ability to stop himself from destroying his own body courtesy another man's fist.* Gee. It really is a conundrum we have on our hands as to why he came back how Gohan described Super Buu. Mm.
Anyway, there you go. Dragon Ball by itself provides the answer for Broly's story right there. Yall had a goodnthing, and yall scuffed it cuz yall didn't get it. Naruto and Bleach were around at that time as well I think. I'm not quite saying that's the reason for certain points in the movie, but I wouldn't be surprised if they thought that folks were warming up to the deeper concepts of the soul, enough to make a character that though evil was a mentally worn then broken man when he debuts. Which Toriyama, to my knowledge, never tried before. Heck, the movie wasn't even his idea.
The problem with that assumption is that you'd be expecting the core audience of a series that's; like you said; only ever about throwing hands and pen measuring contests to have the patience to want to pick up, nevermind look into, those subtle call backs to established lore and even the culture behind it that; for laziness' sake; was being phased out.

In a way I can get why they chose not to have him really do anything to them but um....actually nevermind. He can't really process certain things at this point so it's a wonder he got fked with scot-free. That and I'm wondering if the fact that the ending of the first movie made it impossible for him to have Zenkais. His body was clearly destroyed by his own energy meaning that he clearly died, and he wasn't able to keep it capped without venting before. Unless his body reassembled itself...for SOME REASON, after being thrown into Earth after the scuffle...for SOME REASON, then being rendered frozen in ice.. Really not sure if that's the thought process behind him still being the same strength-wise in 10. I know the consensus is that Gohan grew stronger since Cell; at least according to some; but...him not piecing the other two is embarrassing by itself.

I like Bio-Broly conceptually because it at first leaves one with the assumption that any part of Broly that exists can be used to bring him back, or rather reproduce him. That by itself isn't quite something major, but more the idea of him eventually becoming this force of nature with no physical vessel to contain him, and thus free of the concern of his own power being a double edged sword. Cuz he died from his own power--yes someone punched him really hard, he still blew up cuz he couldn't contain himself anymore shush XD--he then willed himself back to life albeit worse off, gets killed again, then is brought back/replicated through his own blood. Him winding up that walking muk pile is...what it is, but it clearly inherited his malice. *Something* could have been done with that. Something was done with it.

The problem is primarily how his beef is with Goku instead of with Vegeta. Paragus literally tells Vegeta how much he and Broly hates his family. Vegeta’s family is the entire reason why Paragus and Broly almost fucking died too.
Then Second Coming and Bio Broly were obvious attempts at trying to capitalize the popularity that the first Broly movie had gotten but failed due to how the first ended and how the second one began imo. Idk how Broly goes from exploding into millions of pieces in a whole other planet to somehow arriving on earth with his body fully intact without any assistance at all? Would’ve made so much more sense if someone with a desire to destroy the saiyans wished for Broly to be back. Again Broly as a character isn’t necessarily a problem but there are a lot of reasons the writers of Toei decided to bring Broly back with a different approach to his story
