Burma ( present Myanmar)fought against UK 3 times in 1822,1852 and 1885 and finally was defeated by UK and was colonized till IJA( Imperila Japan's Army) came to Burma to fight against UK.
The Burmese king Thibaw Min(1859-1916)and his royal families(his queen and 4 daughters) at that time were captured by UK Army and were robbed all their wealth and were thrown into a dirty and small wagon of an ox-drawn carriage from their castle and were abandoned in India.
One of his eldest daughter was sold in India to an Indian soldier who had already his wife.Other his daughters died in the poverty in India. This is waht UK did in Burma.

Roman 213 ??? Britain allowed women's suffrage in 1918, after her economy took a huge hit from WW1 and losing her imperieal quota. I wouldn't say it was a good time for the Empire. By the way colonial administriation is not same as the home administriation; obviously living in an India under the British administration doesn't give you the same rights as a British citizen. Britian has great achivements; but if some complains about Japan for her dark past, then one should do to same for British Empire for subjugating wealth of the half of the world, for inventing consentriation camps and racial theories that insipered Nazis, for the Bengali famine etc.

A case of a KOREAN camp follower " Mun Oku-chu" in the WW2.
A former Korean camp follower woman in the WW2 Mun Oku-chu said in her memoir: "I was recruited by a Korean camp follower's owner. I saved a considerable amount of money from tips, so I opened a saving account. I could not believe that I could have so much money in my saving account. One of my friends collected many jewels, so I went and bought a diamond. I often went to see Japanese movies and Kabuki plays in which players came from the mainland Japan. I became a popular woman in Rangoon. There were a lot more officers in Rangoon than near the frontlines, so I was invited to many parties. I sang songs at parties and received lots of tips. I put on a pair of high heels, a green coat and carried an alligator leather handbag. I swaggered about in a fashionable dress. No one in town could guess that I was a camp follower woman. I felt very happy and proud. I received permission to return home, but I didn't want to go back to Korea.
I wanted to stay in Rangoon." According to Professor Ahn Byong Jik of Seoul University, Mun Oku-chu continued to work as a prostitute in Korea after the war. Yet she testified before UN Special Rapporteur Radhika Coomaraswamy that she was abducted by the Japanese military.

This really put our thinking to the test, sometimes, people forget things, shadowed by their own pride and glory too ignorant to accept defeat and apologize for their own peoples atrocities. But if we place ourselves in the shoes of the Japanese people right now, their modern history must be a shame to even broach but it is a fact they can't run away from. I'm sure the common Japanese people feel regret and disgust by their own peoples action but Japanese people are not represented by the people sadly, as they are after all "Westernised".

The simple lack of nuance and intelligence people refuse to use when dealing with such a harsh topic such as this one results in the acceptance of evil or extreme ideas such as Nazism or racial superiority. @i i Here's Mao Zedong telling the Prime Minister of Japan to take back his apology
"(Japan) doesn't have to say sorry, you had contributed towards China, why? Because had Imperial Japan did not start the war of invasion, how could we communist became mighty powerful? How could we stage the coup d'état? How could we defeat Chiang Kai Shek? How are we going to pay back you guys? No, we do not want your war reparations!"
-Mao Zedong greeting Japanese Prime Minister Kakuei in Nanjing, 1972
Here's Mao praising Japan's contribution to his war effort
"Those Japanese were real good. Without Japanese's help, China's [Communist] revolution would not have suceeded. I said the same thing to a Japanese, a capitalist, by the name of nanxiang sanlang(?).He kept on saying: 'Sorry, we did invade China' I said to him: 'Don't say that, on the contrary, Japanese helped us (Communist) in a big way', especially Japanese warlords and the Japanese Emperor."
-Mao Zedong's conversation with American journalist Edgar Snow, 1970
Mao Zedong's communists were on the retreat across China from the Republic of China until Japan's timely intervention saved him. The Republic of China's military suffered over 3 million casualties from their best trained and equipped units fighting Japan, as well as over 20 million civilian deaths.
The Republic of China was obligated (even though Chiang Kai Shek stalled as long as he could as he considered other Chinese greater threats than Japan) to defend her civilians against invaders which meant pitched battles in urban environments against the brunt of Japanese mechanized forces, while Mao Zedong could afford to retreat into the countryside and fight a guerrilla war ambushing small groups of Japanese soldiers.
By the time the Japanese Empire was defeated, Mao had regained his strength (thousands of Japanese who surrendered were even recruited to Mao's forces) and finished off the weakened Republic.

The horrible Gegenm Massacre and rapes of many Japanese women and civilians by Soviet Union's soldiers and Chinese in Manchuria in the WW2.
The Gegenmiao massacre, also known as the Gegenmiao incident, was a massacre and rapes conducted by the Soviet Army(one of Allied Forces members in the WW2) and a part of the local Chinese population against over half of a group of 1,800 Japanese women and children who had taken refuge in the lamasery Gegenmiao/Koken-miao (葛根廟) on August 14, 1945, during the Soviet invasion of Manchuria.
The massacre occurred in Gegenmiao/Koken-miao (present day: Gegenmiao zhen; 葛根廟鎭), a town in the Horqin Right Front Banner of the Hinggan League of Inner Mongolia. Refugees were shot, run over by tanks or trucks, and bayoneted by the red army after they raised a white flag. After two hours, well over one thousand Japanese refugees, mostly women and children, had been killed. Angry Chinese chased a group of Japanese refugees into a river, where many drowned. Some women were stripped and raped by soldiers. A woman was stripped and killed by Chinese after her child was killed by Soviet Red Army soldiers. One family tried to hide in the trenches, but were pursued and gunned down by Soviets. They also beat mothers into submission in order to steal children. In the market a Japanese boy could sell for 300 yen, a girl for 500 yen.
By the end of the killings over 1000 people had died.

As a Japanese person, I understand that the Japanese government was wrong. And we should do all we can to apologize for the military's action. However that being said, Both Chinese and Korean Government must ask themselves what specifically they want. I realize that apologies and donation will not be enough, but its not like we can go back in time and stop it from happening.
Furthermore, in my view, it is extremely archaic to pin the fault of Imperial Japan to our current generation. The current generation is not at fault for Imperial Japan's actions.
Do I think that Japanese Government is wrong for hiding historical events, and sometimes denying Japanese war crimes in the past? Definitely. But once again, our current generation is not, nor should we be responsible for what Japan did in the past.

I won't pretend to understand the struggles that these comfort women felt, but what else do you expect the Japanese government to do? The Japanese government is paying China and Korea, apologized and will continue to apologize. put many people in jail and even invoked the death penalty (which is extremely rare for Japan) I understand that no matter how much the Japanese government pays, it will never be enough, but at the same time, do you understand that despite our massive debt, Japan has never stopped paying for the atrocities? Despite being an occurance that happened few generations ago, are we supposed to feel guilt for something that we did not do? You used the example of Germany so I'll use that example as well. Do you think it's right for current generation of Germans to feel guilt simply because of their past? No.

+武道館 fair enough. I get your point since the Imperial Japan does not exist anymore and Japan seemed to have repaid for their mistakes by giving us a very good advancement in technology for decades which is very beneficial and welcoming for all countries in the world, at least to me, i find that a big advantage.
Even the current Japanese goverment have their own flaws like very strict justice systems and the death penalty is very unfair (though that is another story), i do wish if they can at least show a bit more that apologizing to the people who were left sufferring and traumatised because of the war, like a specific monument to signify their peace together, a memorial, or a special home or treatment centre for women who have been traumatised for sex trafficking or rape or any kind of abuse as a means of apology.
But then again, the Japanese cannot do all of that to everyone. They have their own nation to deal with because Japan is slowly rising in numbers, to the point of over-population, treatment to the older generation is decreassing and not as beneficial, it is an glimpse of economic breakdown, or also medical issues since plenty of japenese wear face masks in public because of disease and also the problems because of the latest nuclear disaster.
So, they have a lot of problems and cannot deal with all of them at the same time. While true, one cannot hide away from the past forever and nobody can escape their history, but i do wish that someday, maybe in the future, they will eventually repay for their war crimes during WWII

A huge amount of money was donated to all camp followers in
Korea, Taiwan, Philippines except for Japan in the WW2 from a Japanese private organization ((not Japanese government)) from Japanese pities, virtue , humanity and warm hearts . But almost all Japanese and even Japanese government already knew those camp followers including Japanese camp followers were recruited with money, were sold by their poor parents or were deceived by Korean pimps of Korean brothels. Japanese camp followers were major prat of those camp followers in the WW2. 2nd were Koreans ( Korean--Japanese at that time).
About 55% of comfort women in the WW2 were Japanee,35% were Korean(Korean- Japanese at that time for the lawful and internationally approved annexation of the Korean peninsula by Japan from 1910 till the end of the WW2 in 1945) and 10% were Chinese etc. Japanese comfort women were most in the number.Even one Japanese war prostitute has never requested apology and compensation to Japan because they knew they decided by themselves to wrok as a war prostitute to get big money for her family's poverty. Very strangely and contradistinctively the communsit China and S&N Korea have never mentioned about so MANY JAPANESE comfort women till now if they insist women's human right is important in the world.
Regrettably only in Indonesia some Japanese soldiers compel some women to wrok as prostitutes, but those Japanese soldiers were sentenced to the death by Japanese imperila army. The Fake story of Fake Korean war prostitutes was invented by the Asahi Shinbun(Newspaper) in Japan(not in Korea and China) for the first time in 1980s. But finally The Asahi Shinbun(Newspaper) admitted and apologized for their Fake stories of Korean war prostitutes for 32 years since 1980s and its president Mr. Tadakazu Kimura and several editors Mr. Nobuyuki Sugiura etc. took its responsibilty for fake news and were fired in Sept.2014.

As of 2007 following money was donated by the Japanese PRIVATE organization.(BBC NEWS 10th/April 2007). From 2007 till 2018 much bigger money was donated to all war prostitutes from the Japanese PRIVATE organization. 565m yen ($4.7m) was raised in donations from the Japanese people, and given to 285 comfort women from Korea, Taiwan and the Philippines, each of whom received about 2m yen ($16,700)
    • 770m yen ($6.5m) in Japanese taxpayers' money was provided to pay for medical fees for these women, and for 79 other women from the Netherlands
    • 370 million yen ($3.1m) was spent building medical facilities and old peoples' homes in Indonesia, rather than compensating individuals there, and the rest was used for the fund's running costs and other smaller projects.

That could leave the South without enough soldiers needed to ward off an invasion, the Chosun Ilbo newspaper warned. It also expressed doubt that innovations in artificial intelligence can go far enough to mitigate the need for human recruits.
"The extremely low birthrate deals a catastrophic blow to not only national defense but also to health care and welfare," the Chosun article stated.
The worsening situation has many in the country grasping for solutions. The South Korean government has brought forth measures including free universal day care and guaranteed maternity leave, but those moves have not succeeded in inducing families to have more children.
Midterm projections for economic growth are meager, and the current government has pledged to cut spending, which could leave policymakers with fewer options. While South Korea has no history of large-scale immigration, the current government has expanded the use of migrant labor to address labor shortages.
Inha University professor Lee Jae-woo suggested that the government should take more aggressive steps, such as providing inexpensive rental housing units to new parents and developing artificial intelligence-based tools to provide alternatives to expensive private tutoring.
"The government and society must make all efforts for our country to be reborn as a place that is good for raising children," Lee told Nikkei Asia. "If we don't solve the problem of the low birthrate, South Korea will disappear."

More than 12,000 Japanese women were raped only in 1945 by mainly soldiers of Australia, USA etc. in Japan after the end of WW2 . And the GHQ of Allied Forces requested the Occupied Japan's Government to set up many brothels recruiting many Japanese women in many places in Japan for 7 years till Allied Forces left from Japan. Japanese women feared most brutal Australian soldiers with strange huts.

The Japanese army forced their soldiers to take amphetamines to stimulate the war mindset. They made Unit 731 and experimented on my (Filipino) ancestors without anesthesia. They tortured American POWs and cannibalized them. They destroyed so many important artifacts, forced labor, and stole many goods to be sent back to Japan. I grew up hearing about Japanese WW2 atrocities, but only recently did I find out they were taking stimulants, which made their b@+sh!+ craziness make sense. What makes it worse is that these aren't being taught in Japanese school and most Japanese youth don't even know what a Swastika symbolizes. The only area that might be aware of Japanese atrocities more than the rest are residents of Hiroshima and this is because they were the ones nuclear bombed by the Americans.

The Soviet Union's soldiers raped many Japanese women too, but the worst cases were by Korean men in the northern part of the Korean peninsula being supported by the Communist Soviet Union.

@Kyle Whitehead Taiwan actually loves Japan. I love Japan too, but, as a Chinese-American, it pisses me off that Japan censors their own war crimes and their pm visits shrines where war criminals are buried. Japanese citizens shouldn't feel guilty, because they didnt commit these crimes, but they should still learn about this chapter of their country's history. All I want, and all most Asian countries affected by imperial Japan want, are
      1. A sincere apology in which Japan admits to these crimes
      2. For Japanese citizens to learn about the crimes
      3. For government officials to stop visiting the shrine and honoring war criminals.
As for Japan's neighbors being jealous, I think currently Japan is more jealous (or scared, however you want to see it) of China's economic success and increasing power (I'm not defending the Chinese government's rights violations). As for Germany, being split among the Soviets and the rest of the west doesn't excuse at all the atrocities that Hitler and the Nazis committed in Europe, just as the nuking of Hiroshima and Nagasaki do not excuse Japanese war crimes in Asia.

“Conveniently, Timperley was one of the three important persons who attended the ‘resistance committee’ in Shanghai when we were engaging in anti-Japan international propaganda there…
"We decided that, in the present international propaganda operations, Chinese must not come forefront, and that we must find international friends who understand our thinking as well as strategy in the war, and who would become our spokesmen.
"Timperley was an ideal candidate. As a start, we decided to pay money and ask Timperley and Smythe, via Timperley, to write two books as record of witness on Nanking Massacre by the Japanese army, and to publish them… Afterwards, Timperley acted accordingly… two books were fast-selling items and achieved the objective of propaganda.

Long story short, they didn’t know ANY of it. They even mocked him for being “racist”, until he showed wikipedia articles. BUT, they were still hesitant. So, he showed the famous incidents like Nanking, unit 731, comfort women, romusha, etc.
They apologized to him on that day. One of the girls even became teary.
It’s amazing how they can apologize to the outside world so easily when they didn’t even educate their citizens on their atrocities. Good thing the Japanese people is calling for pacifism and demilitarization because fascism is likely to sprout again if they don’t teach WW2.

The head of the International Propaganda Division of KMT( Chiang Kai-shek's Army) Zeng Xubai confessed by himself in his diary as below.
Zeng Xubai (曽虚白), head of the International Propaganda Division (国際宣伝処処長), wrote autobiography “Zeng Xubai Zichuan (曽虚白自伝)” which says as follows:

50,000 Vietnamese Women raped by South Korean soldiers during the Vietnam war and 20,000 mixed children with South Korean soldiers are still awaiting apology from South Korean's government and South Korean people.
Campaign group urges recognition for women affected by sexual violence of South Korean troops and the children born as a result
Totally 320,000 South Korean soldiers were deployed to Vietnam to fight alongside the US between 1964 and 1973, but the story of the country’s involvement in the conflict is largely untold. South Korea has never acknowledged claims of sexual violence allegedly perpetrated by its troops against thousands of women and girls, some as young as 12 - or the children born as a result.

If this apology goes too far it is going to boomerang on Japan.
Remember how German "apology" and price of war (ww1) backfired into another war.
