Funny you mention the "pinecone" reference. One of my customers who loves big pipes had me send him photos of several pipe options and one was a pub rustic. He phoned me and said, " I like that one that looks like a pinecone. The metal piece in the bit is called a "chimney" believe it or not and Peterson claims its main function is to further extend the length the smoke travels by directing the smoke from the bowl down toward the well and then back up to the mouth, producing a cooler smoke. Maybe? I don't know. Also the reason the pipe you bought in Dublin does not say "made in Ireland" is because for several years they did not stamp that on the shank. About two years ago after Laudisi bought Peterson they started stamping "made in Ireland" again like in the old days. Laudisi has brought back a lot of the old traditional Peterson production processes. For example they now again sandblast and rusticate all of the pipes in the Peterson factory whereas they used to have those chores done in Italy, Twain was a big Peterson advocate although he also smoked many cigars. I think Holbrook found the cigar to be a better prop on stage as he used it to accentuate points as he was telling his great stories. Risa and I saw him twice on stage in Portland, ten years passed between the two performances we saw. By the second time around he did not need much makeup to pull off the resemblance. Final thought, let's all take a moment today to remember Queen Elizabeth 2d's passing. Ruled with grace over 70 years of world turmoil. Keep puffin.

Thanks for the recommend ... have 2 House Pete's... one reg sandblast the other a PSB...but no Pub. About that "new" rustication...I guess pine cone hits the bulls eye spot on. Never could get used to the feel..almost like coral. So I'm sticking with either old pete estates or new sandblast. Either way time for a Pub! 😝

I have 2 of the three volumes of Mark Twains autobiography. He smoked cigars and pipes, from the time he woke until he went to bed. He carried his pipe tobacco in a flour or other cloth sack, he would remove the stem from his pipe and put it in the sack. Whenever he wanted to smoke it he would just pull it out with however much was in the pipe reattach the stem and smoke it.

concerning Twain's smoking preference i get the impression from reading alot if not most of his writing that he was a prolific and inveterate smoker of cigars. the lower estimates suggest 22 a day. often going to sleep with one in his mouth. i dont know how the man could find the time for a pipe with that schedule. ive seen pictures of him holding or smoking what ls apparently at least 3 Petersons. he did a bit of advertising for them. i remember him describing smoking many cobs while writing early on in his career. buying them by the dozen. perhaps he occasionally used a pipe as a pallet cleanser between cigars? perhaps he went back and forth between the two like i do. preferring one to the other at times. that kind of behavior or the frequency of it certainty wouldn't fly in our time and he got a good deal of criticism for it in his.
    nice looking pipes. take care

One more shot at aromatics, my god, from the label description and the dizzying array of ingredients you would think firing that stuff up would give you a euphoric feeling par excellence, unfortunately Tom, as you and I know, oftentimes the description on the tin is often in inverse proportion to the amount of flavor one derives from the product. This one sounds like a terrible waste of good blending tobaccos lost in a sea of "glop". LOL.

Have you got any advice for a newb pipe smoker like myself to help with saliva build up in my mouth while smoking? I keep the pipe clenched in my mouth similar to the way you do while I'm working on something, but after a very short amount of time, I almost collect a mouthful of saliva while doing so! I know that is not the most pleasant thing to think about, but just wondering if there's something I'm doing wrong to cause this to happen? Thanks in advance for any suggestions you may have! :)

Before I got the O29 I went through five $40 electric chainsaws, and got a lot of wood cut with them. Also a major hassle to wrangle a cord through the woods. The new battery-powered saws look good, but since the 029 got fixed for a hundred bucks and didn't need to be replaced, that decision has been put off for another few years.
