- American Pie is the title of a 1971 music album by Don McLean, best known for its title track about The Day the Music Died. The third track, "Vincent," is a tribute to the famed artist Vincent Van Gogh.
The original 1971 LP is dedicated to Buddy Holly, and was reissued in 1980 minus the track "Sister Fatima".
The original United Artists Records inner sleeve featured a free verse poem written by McLean about the late William Boyd, also known as Hopalong Cassidy, along with a picture of Boyd in full Hopalong regalia. This sleeve was removed within a year of the album's release. The words to this poem appear on a plaque at the hospital where Boyd died.
The first song where I ever felt someone was singing to me and understood me.
All they ever play on the radio is the title track. That sucks.
That and Vincent, but the whole album is great.
Great accompanying video, TheStaticAirwaves!
McLean outdoes Dylan, Simon, etc. on this ocassion.
When this album came out, I was coming out to myself. It was an extremely painful period. I was suicidal! I had heard some of the more popular songs on this album and so I bought it!
I heard CROSSROADS. I played that song over and over and over. CROSSROADS saved my life and gave me life. Thank you for this special holy song, D. McL...
This is still one of the most beautifully perfect albums i've ever heard.
Timeless music and work...along with "Vincent"...the most introspective song on the album...brilliant writing and arranging...the ENTIRE album IS a masterpiece.
❤this. So descriptive of life and choices made. Good choices and bad. Did we learn anything? Still listening and learning.
