Yes, Shadow Squadron was a friggin' AWESOME game!!! It had a very smooth frame rate, very useful 3D radar display, huge star ships you could blow apart piece by piece, and the draw distance was so far away the ships were literally too small to see except for the target indicator brackets that let you know they were there. There was no popping in & out of view.
I got the 32x from Best Buy back in the days! This was the game it came with. Man those graphics where the best back then up all night playing these games and we loved it!
Starblade, Hard Drivin', Race Drivin', and Stun Runner would have all been great on the 32X. Since its power fell short of the next generation of consoles, it would have been nice to see more 3rd party arcade conversions given how well Space Harrier and After Burner turned out!
10 years later and 5 days before Election Day 2020, how am I the only person to find an actual unnoticed comment from CGRUndertow? Thanks for those Barbie reviews, Derek.
The problem with the jaguar was it was really 36bit not 64, but due to some weird addons to its hardware it became techically 64 on paper, but those addons also made it very hard to develop games for so most developers just chose to make games for different consoles instead.
Why was his never put on Saturn? Here's a key reason (among many) why 32X was a terrible, reckless idea. That said, this is a really good title for this semi-system.
@plurp7 Technically, yes the SNES required an addon to pull off the 3d effects. Starfox contained the Super FX chip, the first 3D graphics accelerator in a consumer product.
I miss my Sega and my 32x i donated them around the same time i got my Xbox (maybe a year after) had almost every 32x game and probably half the genius library.
You know what Star Wars game kicked ass? Star Wars Trilogy Arcade. The one where you sat down in front of a big rear-projection screen and used a joystick. Nowadays you can't even find one without the Star Wars logo burned into the screen.
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron and Rogue Squadron II provide this too but allow different ships and 3rd person o.o. (R.S. III can unlock the arcade machines though)
@donthehonk yes i get you on that. but the console itself needed not an extra piece of console or ram expansion to run the Cartridge bearing the Super FX chip, was my point.
Great Review, There is also another game very simliar to this game on the Gamecube, It's pretty awesome. I like the music at the end of the review. Everytime I here that music, I always think of Han solo blasting the green guy in the bar, lol.
Sir, I can not wait for Red Dead Redemption. You can light bears on fire and then put out the flaming bear with dynamite. Oh no. There I go crying again. This game will be a dream come true.
On of the few 32x titles that actually pushed the system with incredible graphics and sound. Had this back in the day and was blown away just didn't like the gameplay too much.
Watching this game makes me want to go back and play X-wing and Tie Fighter for PC. Also, Tie Fighter came out about 5 months before this and is still what I consider one of the best games ever. If this game is Lando, then Tie Fighter is Vader.
F-15 Strike Eagle! I am so glad somebody else like that game. I dreamed about playing on Lan that game with my AT 80286 with 1 MB of ram. Today it´s posible but, there´s no good online fliying combat games :(
I note that you don't cover when the game utterly FAILS and is rendered utter shite: Once entering the navigation inside a Star Destroyer. Based on that, and how weak most of the games were (relative to the expense), it's why I sold my 32x 4 weeks after buying it.
This game particularly wouldn't be so bad if you know, you could actually pause the game, which you can't. I literally kept pressing start and the game did not pause. It just kept switching between 3rd person and 1st person view. And I noticed there's no option menu either, so that's another problem.
ArticWolf2015 Ultra V-Fox 2nd Channel I've had fanboys on other clips, experts who weren't even around when this shit was dropped on us, lose their shit on me because I commented on fucking bad the 32X was. I was a hardcore Sega fan till I got Sega CD'd and then this piece of shit. I only bought the (excellent) DC after Sega went tits up in hardware. This game was fucking horrible.
+Carnage Insaniac I'm sure when the Rebel pilots were assaulting the Death Star they would've loved some sort of Force pause or rewind ability but uh, nope they mostly all died. lol Sorry, couldn't help but kid around. In all honesty, pausing is a nice feature but you don't get to pause arcade machines and I'm pretty sure that's what this game was trying to emulate; that faced paced arcade action. Which also would explain why you get a few lives then game over, no continues... At least none I remember, could be wrong though.
i remember my fiend lending me the game and the 32X, the game was fun the 32x stopped working b4 long. I felt arwfull giving him back his 32x which refused to work properlly. It wasnt untyill resently when i found out some 32xs broke down when used with a MD mark 1.
@cpufightclub I owned the Mega Drive (Genesis), Mega CD (Sega CD) then the 32X, and my friend had the Sega Game Gear... LOL, I gave up after that though... They were the glory days!
boy, were you on a roll with those random Star Wars jokes :P jeeeez ^^ anyhoo, I understand your problem with the limited ship control, but this was conceived as a rail shooter, don't forget to take that in consideration ;) great game, really got me going on the 32x hype back then ^^
wow, for an old ass game, this looks pretty damn good. I would have loved to have played this
Why does Admiral Ackbar sound like arnold schwarzenegger
Yes, Shadow Squadron was a friggin' AWESOME game!!!
It had a very smooth frame rate, very useful 3D radar display, huge star ships you could blow apart piece by piece, and the draw distance was so far away the ships were literally too small to see except for the target indicator brackets that let you know they were there. I got the 32x from Best Buy back in the days! This was the game it came with. Man those graphics where the best back then up all night playing these games and we loved it!
everything is so polygony and so awesome
this looks really good for the era wow
opening reminded me of lego star wars, also the theme music is awsome, i want to download it
Starblade, Hard Drivin', Race Drivin', and Stun Runner would have all been great on the 32X. Since its power fell short of the next generation of consoles, it would have been nice to see more 3rd party arcade conversions given how well Space Harrier and After Burner turned out!
amazing for the genesis to run something like that - even with the 32x
Wow, thats really good sound actually
This review is so Lando. Wait... I can post on my videos now and nobody knows it's me? LANDO LANDO LANDO!!!! Yeah! -CGR
10 years later and 5 days before Election Day 2020, how am I the only person to find an actual unnoticed comment from CGRUndertow?
Thanks for those Barbie reviews, Derek.
i'm selling my friends to the empire, you can't get more Lando than that!
Really impressive for a 1994 release.
With Star Wars Arcade, A WINNER IS YOU
God this game brings back memories lol. Always played it at my cousins when he had the 32x at the time.
This was a great game! I spent a lot of time on it back in the day. Thanks for the upload.
This was like an arcadified version of X-Wing. I played it several times at Disneyland and it's a lot of fun.
got this game for xmas in 1994, it's awesome
Use the force Starfox!
your best video yet. I LOVED all the references to TESB
Space Harrier is also quite awesome on the 32X. Indistinguishable from the arcade.
This is one of only two games that I had / have for my 32x. Doom and Star Wars Trilogy. I should really get more games for it.
Looks like so much fun, and graphically still looks good.
I am terribly impressed!! This looks almost as good as Tie Fighter for the PC. For a console at this time that's great!
Admiral Ackbar, the character behind his now-famous line "It's A Trap!"
I forgot about this game. So many good memories. Love all the Star Wars jokes.
holly crap R2D2s srceam f***ing scared me
F-19 Stealth Fighter...awesome...you should review it some time...
The problem with the jaguar was it was really 36bit not 64, but due to some weird addons to its hardware it became techically 64 on paper, but those addons also made it very hard to develop games for so most developers just chose to make games for different consoles instead.
The world needs more X-Wing.
Nice review... I remember playing this and thinking it was amazing
I remember my local video store selling there rental 32x units for 5 dollars and games for about 2 bucks a pop.
My weekend was so Medic Droid.
I remember seeing this on either the 32X or the N64 back in the day.
"Lando" should indeed be an adjective.
1:45 Those are Doom's BFG sound effects.
This game makes me wish I had the Sega 32X when I was a kid.
I think you need to have two shows. A Classic Game Room and a Modern Game Room.
Why was his never put on Saturn? Here's a key reason (among many) why 32X was a terrible, reckless idea. That said, this is a really good title for this semi-system.
Wow, this is actually better than most N64 games I've seen. Too bad 32X failed. It looks like a very capable system. Very nice.
2:53
Was that R2-D2?
Yes that was, their ship got hit. You can hear R2’s voice at several points in the game.
@plurp7 Technically, yes the SNES required an addon to pull off the 3d effects.
Starfox contained the Super FX chip, the first 3D graphics accelerator in a consumer product.
I miss my Sega and my 32x i donated them around the same time i got my Xbox (maybe a year after) had almost every 32x game and probably half the genius library.
one of my fav 32X games
Holy shaded polygons, batman!
PEPPY: "Luke, Do a BARREL ROLL!!!"
i wanted to see the Bush Cheney bumper sticker on the back of the ship soo badly! :(
You know what Star Wars game kicked ass? Star Wars Trilogy Arcade. The one where you sat down in front of a big rear-projection screen and used a joystick. Nowadays you can't even find one without the Star Wars logo burned into the screen.
after all of the years I remember Admiral Ackbar having a bad New York accent on this.
Say yes to commercials. Awesome review
Mark.
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron and Rogue Squadron II provide this too but allow different ships and 3rd person o.o. (R.S. III can unlock the arcade machines though)
The graphics remind me of the Star Fighter game in the The Last Star Fighter film. :D
Everytime I here that music, I always think of Han solo blasting the green guy in the bar, lol.
looks great - wish they would redo this, tie fighter and battlefield
Speaking of 32X and stuff....CGR needs SEGA CD and Sega 32X CD reviews!!!
this game was hard As FUCK!
great review Mark! don't you think its about high time you review "Starfox" for SNES?
the SNES didn't require any add-ons to pull of the 3D effects...
Even the sega svp chip. I wish they canned the 32x project and focus more on the svp chip. Even a Saturn port would have been a great port.
Sir, I can not wait for Red Dead Redemption. You can light bears on fire and then put out the flaming bear with dynamite. Oh no. There I go crying again. This game will be a dream come true.
I have both this and Shadow Squadron. I was just waiting for you to bring up Shadow Squadron, which is awesome! :)
STAY AWESOME! :)
I wonder if they made the original "Star Wars" with vector-style graphics for the Vectrex?
i loved this game in the arcades...or maybe that was trilogy. Im getting so old.
Best game over music since GAME OVER YEEAAAAAAAAHHH!
The graphics still look pretty good too.
When are you going to review Shadow Squadron
my weekend was pretty Lando i've gotta say :D
Lol, the puns alone make this review worth watching^^
Also, this really reminds me of the old, but still awesome, TIE Fighter game.
On of the few 32x titles that actually pushed the system with incredible graphics and sound. Had this back in the day and was blown away just didn't like the gameplay too much.
So this game is constant "All range mode!"
At the end: FOX!!!!
Oh, wait, wrong game!
Watching this game makes me want to go back and play X-wing and Tie Fighter for PC. Also, Tie Fighter came out about 5 months before this and is still what I consider one of the best games ever.
If this game is Lando, then Tie Fighter is Vader.
I'm an old 'Sega head', but even I had to stop watching this vid as the commentary is UNBEARABLE!
I just got brilliant ideal those guys who made HAWX should made Star Wars flying game based on its engine now that would be AWESOME!
So it's basically an older version of rogue leader for the gamecube. That's reminds me, you should do a review of rogue leader for the gamecube.
@GlockNinja The arcade ports were great on the Sega 32X!
My weekend was LANDO
I was going to say that i was going use the adjective Lando but thats probably a going to preserve my virginity forever
The Sega 32x everybody... the console that make doom sound like shit but can play the whole star wars song perfectly *claps*
thats subjective doom32x was one few good games on 32x it sounded fine to me
aby mondesir Yes... Subjective... for people who have never played the PC version.
***** then how come DOSBOX can emulate the soundblaster card?
i'm just curious
for some games, others can't or won't use it.
F-15 Strike Eagle! I am so glad somebody else like that game. I dreamed about playing on Lan that game with my AT 80286 with 1 MB of ram. Today it´s posible but, there´s no good online fliying combat games :(

This game was fucking horrible.
Well, what do expect from an arcade port? I mean, look at Lethal Enforcers on SNES.
ROOKTABULA DC barely had any games either. Certainly better than the 32X and CD but the Sega Genesis is the only really good Sega console.
+Carnage Insaniac I'm sure when the Rebel pilots were assaulting the Death Star they would've loved some sort of Force pause or rewind ability but uh, nope they mostly all died. lol

Tie Fighter....jeez now I feel old!
are you saying a trojan war used a wooden horse? i didnt even know that was an object. thanks for the lesson mighty and great one.
i remember my fiend lending me the game and the 32X, the game was fun the 32x stopped working b4 long. I felt arwfull giving him back his 32x which refused to work properlly. It wasnt untyill resently when i found out some 32xs broke down when used with a MD mark 1.
I've only played the arcade version of this at Disneyland, which of course is a bit better. But this still looks like a good adaptation.
Hey Mark.
How many games console have really you got?
you should review shadow squadron for 32x its like a 3D version of the dreadnaught factor
it actually doesnt look too bad
@cpufightclub I owned the Mega Drive (Genesis), Mega CD (Sega CD) then the 32X, and my friend had the Sega Game Gear... LOL, I gave up after that though... They were the glory days!
I got a 32X only for this back then
great game but hard as hell lateron
amazing gfx 4 the time.
I always thought the 32X was powered by a flux capacitor. Or it that the Vectrex?
I remember having this. Sadly, I did not have the 32X Graphics cable. So yeah, the Empire Fleet had cloaking devices.
More than Lando, dude!
BTW which is the best star wars space shooter? i love space sims but apart from this game on the vid i havnt played any.
i always wanted to play this... never got a chance
The N64 was a much, MUCH more powerful machine than the Genesis/32X combination.
Even the ps1, saturn and jaguar (on paper)
i think i only got past the death star level once in the whole time that i had it.
@TheMVRules I'm pretty sure he has a star fox cartridge
boy, were you on a roll with those random Star Wars jokes :P jeeeez ^^
anyhoo, I understand your problem with the limited ship control, but this was conceived as a rail shooter, don't forget to take that in consideration ;) great game, really got me going on the 32x hype back then ^^
Awesome review.
No games like Star Fox are slow choppy and feel horribly out of date today, Star Wars Arcade is very smooth and playable.
still playable today? that's debatable
