If Richard Jordan was still alive to play Armistead and they included a scene of Almira Hancock singing this song with Lo and Winfield... Man, would that have been something.
I started reading the book Gods and Generals in the summer last year. And reading the scene where Hancock’s wife was singing the song when Armistead and Hancock teared up broke my heart because two BFFs were forced to go to war against one another in a struggle that could’ve been avoided.
"A lot of fellas from the old outfit. People standing around singing in the blue uniform. We were leaving the next day. Some going North, some going South...Splitting up. A soldier's farewell."
It is mentioned in Killer Angels which I just finished reading and why I had to find it. I love this old stuff. What a sweet and sad song. Should have kept this scene in!
OH MY GOD I LOVE SONG I LITERALLY LISTEN TO IT EVERY NIGHT BEFORE BED AND I ALMOST CRIED BECAUSE THE SONG IS ABOUT TWO BFFS BEING SPLIT IN TWO THANKS TO THE CIVIL WAR
Thats amazing man, i loved these old Irish tunes. David Kincaid sings alot of Old Irish songs he has two out called "The Irish Volunteer" and "The Irish American's Song". All of them are period pieces about the Irish or Irish Brigade.
Funny story. I like to listen to songs mentioned in books as I read them. I'm reading Gods and Generals and this video happened to be the top result for "Kathleen Mavoureen"
@BullRun1861 In the full-length script for the film, the scene with the party at Hancock's is in it. They talk for a bit when before Hancock's wife sits down to play the song. About mid-way through the song, it cuts to this scene in the Chamberlain house. Hope it's in the Director's Cut.
I agree. However, in an interview, Maxwell made it clear that he wants to release it, it seems like the problem might be Turner. Speaking of which, maybe we should start a petition, prove to Turner that if he releases the film, people will buy it.
I agree with Victor, this should have been included in God's and Generals. But better yet; it should have been added to Gettysburg also.....twice. Once as Chamberlain spends time with his wife; and again as an Armistead reflection in California.......(with a scene showing Armistead & Winnie together) in the Union Blue uniforms at the piano.
Sorry, I accidentally deleted the comment to which I am replying. The comment was "Where did you come across these deleted scenes?" My answer: on the Gods and Generals soundtrack, there is a bonus disc with several deleted scenes and two music videos.
haha, i was just in a play with the guy they are talking to. it's a good scene, probably would have added something to the movei, helped tie it in with Gettysburg
I wish this scene had been in the movie. It would have done more to establish the character of Chamberlain. It was the purpose of movie to contrast the character of Chamberlain vs. Jackson. The religion of both men is treated superficially, but Chamberlain's treated hardly at all. One thinks that a professor of natural theology might have had some interesting things to say about the meaning of it all.
@siaripop7: What I really like about God & Generals is how they tried very hard to allow the protagonists of the Civil War to speek for themselves. It was so utterly unlike the typical Hollywood historical treatment, w/ every effort to makes sets & costumes authentic & then they place modern characters w/ modern sensibilities in all that. But G & G is different from G-burg in that regard. The father's novel is less historical then the son's. I think the father was channeling WWII.
It may be a couple more "greats" and all, but I had to do a genelogy paper and believe me, I'm descended from him. I am not descended from his daughter Cora Pearl (Emma Crouch), who was a French Courtesean who had relations with Napoleon III (I believe).
let's all just send turner 60 bucks and consider it pre-order money for the Dvd/blu-ray.. ..think cold hard cash in his hand would be more proof to dear ole ted then an online petition...Ill send mine first
+Sisyphus27 The composer was apparently with the Confederates. Frederick Crouch was a bigamist who'd abandoned his family in England and fled to America. His English daughter Emma later became a famous courtesan in Paris - self-styled Cora Pearl.
Gods and generals is a horrible hodge podge of a movie. I know they deleted at least an hour from it including the Battle of sharpsburg. The 10 minutes that the directors cut of gettysburg has added isn't worth watching. Horrible acting by townspeople in gettysburgs mostly.

Definitely
Indeed brother
So true 😢❤

"I said, 'Win, if I ever raise my hand against you, may God strike me dead!'"
and that's exactly what happened.
Makes me cry every time 😢
My Grandfather used to sing this at the end of a session. You could hear a pin drop. Beautiful song.
One of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard,
"A lot of fellas from the old outfit. People standing around singing in the blue uniform. We were leaving the next day. Some going North, some going South...Splitting up. A soldier's farewell."
“It may be for years and it may be forever…” such a powerful scene in the book
It is mentioned in Killer Angels which I just finished reading and why I had to find it. I love this old stuff. What a sweet and sad song. Should have kept this scene in!
Where did you find this deleted scene?
I agree with you my friend! Hope that you are doing well.
I can't get this song out of my mind...I never will....
Reading the book and I’m on this part reading the song lyrics in the book. Amazing movie and book
This song is mentioned in So Red The Rose, by Stark Young. A very sentimental Civil War novel.
Love this song. And I'm a sap, but I love the way he looks at her as they finish the piece -- and that Mira Sorvino appears to actually be playing!
+Anjuli McDonald Mira might actually be playing. Apparently her grandmother was a piano teacher, and her father plays the piano. Why not herself?
Mira Sorvino has a lovely singing voice.
She really does
OH MY GOD I LOVE SONG I LITERALLY LISTEN TO IT EVERY NIGHT BEFORE BED AND I ALMOST CRIED BECAUSE THE SONG IS ABOUT TWO BFFS BEING SPLIT IN TWO THANKS TO THE CIVIL WAR
Beautiful. Try the version by John McCormack. its sublime.

THIS SONG REMINDED ME OF RICHARD BECAUSE IT LITERALLY BROKE MY HEART JUST LISTENING TO IT
Broke my heart too 💔😢
So sad...I love this song though, and all the actors in this scene are great.

I'm currently reading The Killer Angels and this song was mentioned, so I got curious as to what it sounded like
I would like to read "the killer angels" but my english is very poor and I think (to my surprise) it was never translated ? how is it possible ?
my God I hear this and I can see Lo and Win singing it in California with the other officers
😢
Victor...I agree! Check out "A Soldiers Story" from movie....Good Bad and Ugly.......very moving also.

I say: It is beautiful song...
There's only one "Kathleen M: ""
sung by John Mc Cormack ...irelands greatest tenor
play his recording and you will agree!!
Oh I do, 5cd set. The Irish carouso, none better. Mo ghille mear!
schlusnus I do! John McCormack is the greatest lyric tenor who ever lived!
I was named Mavourneen because of the original song.. I can’t believe it was in a movie, I have only ever heard my mother sing it to me

my great great grandfather wrote this.
I’m a Kathleen
Written by Julia Crawford and Frederick Crouch prior to 1938.
I think you mean 1838,although both are technically correct

that my name lol mavourneen yooo lol
Do you know where I can get those two albums? I have been looking everywhere for them.
You're very welcome!
@Fma42081 I would pay that and so would a lot of reenactors who were in it.
Sounds like a plan :)
You're welcome!
But my opinion is based on first had knowledge. What is your's based on? A movie poster?

What became of the composer? Did he contribute to the Confederate cause?
+Sisyphus27 The composer was apparently with the Confederates. Frederick Crouch was a bigamist who'd abandoned his family in England and fled to America. His English daughter Emma later became a famous courtesan in Paris - self-styled Cora Pearl.
I can hardly believe how the actors looked so much like the real men they played in Gettysburg, unbearable.
agreed, but a cover is always the greastest homage, is it not?
I doubt it. You're 20, your g-g-grandfather would have been alive after 1850, this song was written in 1837 I think. Nice try.

Far more than an hour was cut, more like two hours.
Thank you.....such a beautiful speech. Very appreciative for you posting this.
