Managed switches and unmanaged switches have two main differences -- price and control -- with managed switches being far more expensive, but better for control, and unmanaged switches more affordable but with less options for control. They also vary in other features and security measures, but choosing between them comes down to your enterprise size and needs.

I just bought a 48 port managed switch and it was less than 10% the minimum you quote. I have also seen managed switches for under $30 (4 port).

Apart from being very quite, you have the prices totally wrong, I just bought a 8 port POE 10/100/1000 managed switch for £30

$1500 per port? lol no. While yes they CAN cost that much (and more), you can find many for WAY cheaper. Yes, the managed switches we use at work cost many thousands each, but it's a very different beast when you talk about enterprise level versus consumer grade hardware, or 1gb vs.10gb speeds. A simple search on amazon will bring up several managed switches for less than $100.
