I used to catch him skating local spots in Riverside around 97-99. He was always so cool to my friends and I and seemed happy to have somebody to skate with. He was skating solo pretty often and driving an el camino.
When his part came out, I practically slept outside, I had to learn all of his tricks. Ray Barbee, Natas, and Mike V I keep copies of their boards hanging on my house.
Ray Barbee may be my favorite skater of all time. I grew up in the American South and there was so much aggression at the local park. I remember watching Ray skate and play music. He was a breath of fresh air, has a great smile, and a kind-hearted attitude that seems more genuine than some "good vibes" skaters out there. Barbee is such a legend!
@@gebsvideos6856 His was literally the last board I skated when I stopped in the early 90s. It's been sitting in my garage for decades. I got it back up and running again. Put on new grip tape. New hardware. Got rid of the old thrashed Thunder trucks with the battle axe on them and the completely thrashed Powell Peralta Streetstyle wheels and replaced them with some brand new Indy 159 hollows and some Mini Logo wheels. The deck was still in good shape. Definitely a weird ride though compared to today's Popsicle boards. The nose and tail are kicked up big time. Nice to bring it back from the grave though and give it some TLC and the respect it deserves. Loved Ray Barbie.
@@gebsvideos6856 Keep an eye out on skateone.com. They sell reissue decks and I would be surprised if they didn't do a Ray Barbie reissue. I picked up a Vision Kele Roscrans reissue recently, the deck I think I did my best skating on. Pretty much identical to what it was in the late 80s. I talked to the guy at the factory and he said they are still making them in the US using the same press they used back then.
Ahhhh. That is so awesome. Would love to skate that board again. I do remember that big old tail. I did my first Ollie north on that board. So many no complies. I’m gonna have to check out that site. Thanks!!!!!!
Thanks to the Berrics I was able to see Ray Barbee play his guitar live in Long Beach at a warehouse party...... Dreams I never knew I had I did have a vhs in the 80s I saw him skate, so fun to watch someone grow and progress. Thank you for the amazing ride Steve, Eric and Chase
Man as a kid skating in the late 80's and early 90's this kid was one our crews idols. ALong with the bones brigades early members, Powell and World Industries & Santa Cruz boards were huge back then .. Man its so nice to see Ray still skating so many decades later just like his BOnes Peers .
Growing up in NZ in the 80’s our only connection to the larger skateboarding community was through magazines. We had never really seen pro skaters skate on video, and of course most the photos in magazines were of vert skaters 5ft above a bowl or ramp. When I saw the public domain video, specifically Ray’s part I was blown away, the street skating game changed right there, it was a pivotal moment in skateboarding. I bet thousands of kids went straight out and learnt no complies and kick flips on those monster boards, after watching Ray Barbee.
That first Barbee deck is where it all started for me too...my rather rich buddy had one and let me have a go on it, I was hooked, I also had to have one! I first got a Variflex Tony Hallam Street board then after a year of learning and not quitting my folks bought me a Hawk Medallion... Got to watch Tony Hawk and Ray Barbee do a demo in Johannesburg just before I got the Hawk in December 1990...good times!
Wow, it's just wild hearing this. I'm a few years younger than Ray and as a kid up in Canada, Ray was my favourite skater & I never even took it into consideration, him being black. I had that first deck of his and just seeing it here brought back so many great memories.
0:27. , i discovered skating the summer before 7 grade also. I just turned 12. I loved everything about it, obviously yrs before tht, i would see older kids skating at a school and my brother and i would be glued to what they were doing in the back seat as my mom drove off. Mesmerized would be the word
Love this man; fell into the style back in 1990 with Propaganda! I skated for 25 years and looking back it never really impacted me that he was Black; never thought about it. He was so great to follow; good to see his smiling face after all this time. Really needed it this year
I had his ray barber powell peralta pro model as my first real skateboard. I want to say it was 1993 not sure though. That's super dope he still skates. Sounds like a nice dude👊👊
My uncle got me into skating in about 89 I was 4 yrs old the first video he gave me was ban this and rays part was just so sick to me he just floated around and looked like he was enjoying himself . I skated till I went am in 99 . Peace and love and skating for life .
I saw Public Domain right when it came out at a friend's house. I went to the skate shop as soon as I could and got that Powell Peralta deck with the shuffling dude! I love me some Ray Barbee! So unique and innovative! Back then we had rib bones on our boards, so the graphics would actually last quite a while. I remember being really bummed the first time it got scratched up. ✌😊
Ray Barbee was one of the first black skaters I seen late 80s. I had his card board graphic. I remember a car ran over it after having it for two days. I use to be the black skateboarder. It inspired me. My story was the same. Blacks in the early 90s. I stop skating in mid 2000s.
I remember walking into the Outhouse Skateshop a very long time ago and Ray and the Grubers were behind the counter. Ray was so cool, 'hey can we help you out?" I was like woah Ray Barbee gonna help me grip my new deck.
Legend full stop. Rays stance and board control and foot placement are so perfect. I remember seeing Ray in Ban This and 411's and the song power line in a 411 video.
I actually had the pleasure of meeting and snagging a autograph from Ray Barbee at a Comp in Orange Texas back 90..91 maybe?? Anyway. Humble Dude. Instantly became and has always been one of my all time favorite skaters. His Powell Hydrant deck. All time favorite board. I'm looking for the remake. One for the wall and one to ride.
thankful for Ray Barbee ...set up the harleyQuinn **ragdoll paparazzi deck w some purple rails and 61’s (maybe Vision 67’s they were on sale as the old sector9 wheels were too soft xferring from a small fish cruiser deck) for a new/old school board 🙃🤗😎
You can't not love Ray Barbee. Whether a part or a trick, his personality or his music, name something you love about Ray! 👇
That 360 no comply at the start, his original PP graphic and just him in general.
I used to catch him skating local spots in Riverside around 97-99. He was always so cool to my friends and I and seemed happy to have somebody to skate with. He was skating solo pretty often and driving an el camino.
He just seems like a really genuine and interesting dude
Legend
Unique style!

Love his style. Love his calm, cool demeanor. Love his heart and his kindness.
he’s is 50 and moves so well. this my goal to keep skating into my 50s too.
Legendary Man right here thank you og
Ray Barbee is easily my favourite human. Straight style and soul, and so humble.
This man is daamn near 50 but emanates youth and a childlike spirit. I hope to be like him when I'm older.
Ray: I've been skateboarding for 37 years.
When did you start?
Ray: 37 years ago.
Really wish he said this too.
Memory gold.
Hahaha this made my night

Ray is nothing but pure creativity and that's what I love most about him.
He is my old teachers husband and I got to see him he was very nice and gave us stickers 😊😊😊😁😁
This dude deserves a real documentary of his career! Barbee rules.
He still got them no complies on lock. Love this guy.
Flawlessly so...🤣

Ray!!! He’s also a great guitar player! God bless you Ray.

Skateboard too and I love your videos so much. you’re the bomb
I met Ray about 30 years ago, he’s one of the nicest guys I ever talk to! 👍🏾
I met him 4 years ago at school because my old teacher is his wife he was very nice and gave us stickers 😁😁😁😁
At one time he was skateboarding for only 6 Years. ♡
One word to describe him... inspirational
One of the first pro models I had. Barbee is a legend. Thank you sir for the inspiration for many years. Such a smooth and stylish skater.
I’m pretty sure mine was this odd purple color. Would be great to have that old thing still.

Best skater! He's not ashamed to profess his faith in Jesus. And he lives it. Love Ray!
That was beautiful. Ray is so wise!
Ray Barbee is a legend for sure!!!
Imagine all the great African American skaters that didn’t/don’t exist because it was not considered “acceptable”. Ray, you are a pioneer.
I remember Rays Part. Blew me away.
Rad dude and a good role model. Love watching this dude skate!!!
Thank you for sharing Ray Barbee! Always a big inspiration and the guitar solo was soothing.
Ray Barbee is one of the greatest, most inspiring, people on the planet
love how he intertwines music and skateboarding together. they both go hand in hand in so many ways.
I love this guy, remember when I was a kid an watching him skateboarding.
Absolute pioneer, legend and inspiration as skater, artist and human

Ray Barbee out here making me feel young AF.
Yeah we lost our minds when Ray's first part came out. And over the years skateboarding got to know him as a guy, not just a skater. And we love him.
Beautiful soul 🙏🏻
Public Domain is classic
