Calling an albatross a double eagle is like calling an eagle a double birdie. Actually its worse, double birdie for an eagle at least makes mathematical sense.

The "Best" ones are always where the pro is hitting a 3 wood in. When you are knocking a 6 iron or 8 iron in, sure its amazing but holing a full blast 3 wood is always better.
If it's ever made possible, I'll be glad to give you the second spot in line and when it's time to go back, you can use my spot to bring someone with you, I'm staying. 😂
About 70 years ago, my mother and father played golf separately in the mens and ladies competitions. One day they both scored a hole in on the same par 3. They didn't know until the end of the day it had happened. What are the odds of that?
I know they had they best at the time and to them it was the height of technology but it’s amazing what those older golfers did with the equipment and balls they had.

So if a birdie is one under, an eagle is two under, and an albatross is three under, then a double eagle must be four under right? Or is this just another example of Seppos bastardising language?
What you should be concerned about is the idiot commentators that call an Albatross a double eagle , really grinds my teeth as there is No such thing in Golf, whats next.... a hole in 1 is an "eagle in 1" PS think this par 5 was the champions/senior tour wasn't it , which is ok by me

I totally agree with you Caleb. A par 5 should not be reachable for them with a driver and a mid iron. If the hole is that 'easy' for them, it should be reduced to a par 4 for the tournament.
I agree, Sir Nick. It's been called an Albatross by most of the non-American golfing world since the early 1900s (or before). Americans didn't coin the term "Double Eagle" until 1935. They had probably never heard of an Albatross, and possibly thought Gene Sarazen was the first golfer to ever score a 3 under par hole. But, "Double Eagle"? Really? An Eagle Eagle? But that would be 4 under and there's a name for that already. 4 under is called a Condor (of which there have been just 6 recorded). "Eagle Birdie" would be more correct, but sounds almost as dumb as Double Eagle.

You obviously know NOTHING about golf Newsflash for you, self cutter...they didn't evne have the term EAGLE until less than 10 years ago)
Isn't an albatross really an eagle and a half? A double eagle would be FOUR under par, which if you can do that on a rare Par 6 or higher hole, would be a condor or vulture.
Albatross is a ridiculous term for a 2 on a Par 5. Yes, they are larger bird physically than eagles but the connotation of the word is considered far more negative than positive. A 2 on a par 5 is hardly an "albatross around your neck." Just the opposite.
even if you think (and i don't) that these people are being to "cool" or over the top with making that shot. first........ how many of you can do that. i'm guessing none. second even if you could as rare as those are wouldn't u have a reaction? AND THIRD even ignoring both of those, let the guy have his moment. we don't fault them for that on holes in one. what makes these so special they can't enjoy the moment? if anything, the reactions to hole in ones shoudl be less.
Sorry there isn't such vocabulary as a double Eagle as per the American like to call it . Its only pronoun is as per The R&A description an Albatross. STOP CALLING THIS ACHIEVEMENT BY ITS INCORRECT TITLE PLEASE 😢
No such thing as a double eagle, eagle is -2, double eagle is -4, no such thing. It's an albatross. Stop calling it the wrong term. They clearly don't understand the definition. It needs to stop. More difficult than a hole-in-one. Most difficult score in golf and they can't even call it an albatross, wow.
Petition to end the term double eagle. Doesn't even make any sense. Albatross. It is called an Albatross. And its awesome.
I agree logically, wouldn’t a double eagle be 4 under?? But I like saying double eagle better..
100% bogey is 1 over double bogey is 2 over. Birdie one under - eagle 2 under - albatros 3 under - double eagle is 4 under
4 under is possible called a Condor
Came to the comments to write the exact same thing. 'Double eagle' is awful

How can you have "best albatrosses of all time" and not include Louis Oosthuizen albatross at the Masters in 2012 at hole number 2 ???
The majors maintain exclusive rights to videos and clips. They can't use them in these compilations.
Cause he's a dirty traitor
The greatest albatross I’ve ever seen.
Pretty sure they don’t have the rights to show the clip.

Why not call them triple birdies?
Exactly…bogey…double bogey…triple bogey… so why not the same for birds?

Yeah reminds me of that George Washington SNL skit.
Calling it a double eagle is akin to the misused term 'I could care less'.
wow frankos swing is a thing of beauty

Please bring back the 70s and 80s. Those were the days.
What you mean??
Never say "80s" to a golfer. At least not a pro one.

That’s absolutely insane
I worked for a man in Conroe TX who had 6 (maybe more) double eagles in his time and he was not a pro and a very humble man.
I know they had they best at the time and to them it was the height of technology but it’s amazing what those older golfers did with the equipment and balls they had.
4:27 has always been one of my favorite shots of all time. so ballsy going for it over the water
Gene Sarazen had the greatest Albatross of all time. Period.

It has to be an amazing feeling, especially on the 18th hole.
incredible all these albatrosses and I really like the last one where we see the commentators celebrating 😂
Every albatross qualifies for best albatross. Insane shots.
Witnessed Shrek (Louis Oosthuizen) sink one on the long 2nd, Day 3 2012 Master’s as those shots will certainly energize the crowd every time. 🍻🇺🇸👏🏻🇺🇸🍻
Double Eagle is like -4 no?
I was thinking the name albatross comes from the way the bird looks with its long downward pointing bill - like the number 2.
Eagle = -2 albatross = -3 double eagles = -4... no sense. triple birdies ok..😊
It's both.
Love the double eagle calls
@0:50, 159 out on a par 5? What was the hole only 460? Even so, Jack wasn't hitting 300 yrd drives back then.
courses also weren't that long back then
It was probably on Champions Tour tees.

He could easily hit a 300 yard drive, downhill, downwind with a lot of run, easily.
Double Eagle or Albatross, I have solved the mystery. If the clip is 360p its a Double Eagle, if its HD its an Albatross.
I still like Double Eagle better.
What sport hasn't Vin Scully called
Can you even see if the ball goes in, from that far away?
Depends on the hole; most of the time no, but the gallery wouldn’t be screaming “IT WENT IN IT WENT IN” if they didn’t hole it 💪🏼😂😂
NEVER CALL IT A DOUBLE EAGLE. You don't call an Eagle a double birdie
Where is Tiger? Pretty sure he had one.

Hate to be the party pooper but if they hitting an iron it ain’t a par 5. Well maybe a 6 iron or shorter.
There is a reason that they are pros. They are just better and longer

These comments are weird. Why would anyone judge people saying either "Double Eagle" or "Albatross" in golf? It's not that big of a deal.
Can "double eagle" please god be doubly assigned to history. It makes 0 sense and most importantly it is HORRIBLE!
The "best albatrosses" implies that there are bad albatrosses, I want to see the "worst" of those. 😊
