    Glenbrook is an unrated, undiscovered gem here on NZ.

    Grew up hearing the train every Sunday, tooting in the distance. moved away but returned to take my 2 boys for a ride when they were younger. Brought back memories. Your adventures are fabulous love seeing where you go in my own country. Keep it up.

    Meanwhile, Glen and Mado have been out of the country for quite some time. At least they show us how the sausage is made. Poppy reveals it's late April.

    This is pretty cool. I love that it is run by younger people. The steam engines in NZ were much smaller than the amazing (and huge) engines they had in the USA.

      There were larger "line haul' locos that went between major cities- Search '' The Kingston Flyer" Glenbrook uses a Tank Engine- like Thomas cos its a hit with the kids. plus the expense and impracticallity of a 70mph loco on an 8 mile track is a waste.

      Not true to some extent. They actually took one of NZ's huge main trunk line engines to the states to compare it with theirs in the 1950's. I think you can find one or two on You Tube. ua-cam.com/video/LSrVY1dp-8M/v-deo.html

    There is nothing better than a ride on a Steam Engine (Train). You feel the life of the machine. Puff, Steam, and the moving parts. Then you have movement. Those are the good times.
    Thank you for sharing. Regards from South Africa 🇿🇦.

    Awesome guys. Also check out Motat, Museum of transport and technology, around the corner is Keith park airfield, an amazing air museum in a massive hangar. You can get a tram form the Motat to Keith Park. Good value and good coffee too. Only 10 minutes fro
    m Auckland central. :)

      Very much a standard practice. On ANZAC weekend (or the closest one to ANZAC day) there will sometimes be New Zealand flags put onto the engine.

    You lucky bums. NZders don,t get to ride up front.

    • @DWtrainsNZ
      @DWtrainsNZ 3 місяці тому

      Yes we can, and do, but not as freely as we once could (getting to ride in the cab of a steam loco on KiwiRail's network isn't possible anymore as far as I am aware).
      On most if not all preserved railways (such as the GVR) if the cab isn't full with volunteers, the trip won't pass through a tunnel, and you ask nicely it is usually possible to ride up front. It helps if you know either the driver or fireman and/or the volunteers.
      Also Steam Incorporated in Paekākāriki usually have an open day once a year where you can ride in the cab for a run up to the end of the yard and back, and even drive one of the locos with guidance if you want to for a small fee (I think it was $20 last time).
      I've driven a couple of steam locos (Ab 608 & Ja 1271) and gone for a ride in the cab on KR's network several times (before those got restricted). I've got a playlist here of some of the rides I've been on:- ua-cam.com/play/PLFihE3LG5o7yFEAjm30Kyiq5p-XCT0516.html&si=z6G2TKYrrazK0feL
