  • While at SXSW for the premiere of his latest film, Tetris, star Taron Egerton spoke with Collider’s Steve Weintraub about the fascinating and unbelievable origins of one of the world’s most popular video games. Egerton is best known for his breakout role as Eggsy in the Kingsman franchise and his performance as Grammy and Academy Award-winner Elton John in Rocketman, which earned the actor a Golden Globe. According to Egerton, these previous roles actually played a part in his decision to star in director Jon S. Baird’s condensed version of how Tetris took the world by storm.
In the movie, which is now streaming on Apple TV+, Egerton portrays Henk Rogers, the real-life video game designer and salesperson who made it his mission to retrieve the rights to Tetris from the Soviet Union. The script, penned by Noah Pink, is a concise retelling of the actual events that took place, and “...in terms of the machinations of these separate factions trying to win rights in a very volatile place at a time of particular political unrest, it's all true,” save the epic car chase. The movie also stars Toby Jones as Robert Stein, Nikita Efremov as Tetris game designer Alexey Pajitnov, Roger Allam as Robert Maxwell, and more.
During their conversation, Egerton shares how much he knew about the true story behind the game’s skyrocket to popularity, what appealed to him most about the role, which hairy situation was the most difficult aspect of the job, and what it was like to film in Aberdeen, Scotland. He also discusses upcoming projects like the dystopian LGBTQ+ novel, HappyHead, which he’s serving as a creative producer for, a “sister piece” to the miniseries Black Bird, and whether we’ll be seeing more of Eggsy in the Kingsman franchise.

Really enjoyed this movie. We were all playing Tetris like crazy in the 90's. I'm such a huge fan of Taron Egerton now! Loved him in Kingsman but he was outstanding in Rocketman (should have been nominated & won an Oscar as well as GG for that role). Then he turns around & gives another great performance in Blackbird. He's so versatile, so talented & Damn he's incredible with accents! He does a better American accent than any Englishman (or is Welshman??) that I can recall.
He's a perfectionist... which can have it's pitfalls, (speaking from experience). You just know he puts everything he has into each role he takes on.
He's young & I'm betting he has a hugly phenomenal career ahead of him.
What's really wonderful about Taron is that he seems so down to earth, he's warm & funny & clearly quite comfortable in his own skin. I Loved seeing him with his little sisters at the Rocketman Golden Globes.
Can't wait to see what he does next.

Just watched the movie and I really liked it! Taron did a very great job, and I can't imagine how hard it was to portrait the story in a 2h film without leaving it confusing and unattractive. Congrats to Steve for the amazing talk, it's funny how Taron gets confortable to answer his questions, getting to the point of almost talking about things he shouldn't hahaha

This is the one video game franchise that speaks for all us across the globe. Literally.
Why not show that we still love Tetris this very day to people across the globe?
Henk and Alexey are proof that video games and all other medias don’t have to be propaganda for a political stunt that hurts the people.

Eggsy needs to be back in the Kingsman movies, hopefully he can save the franchise from itself! The last one was such a snoozefest (plus there was the whole Lenin meeting Adolf bit at the end, which is such absolute horseshit - that blatant, elitist propaganda made me regret spending one minute even giving the film a chance)

A lot of what has recently been going off with Matthew Vaughn's stuff is that MV is more and more self-inserting the characteristics he wished he had into characters and making them play out an elaborate fan fiction. At least that's what it feels like and it makes me sad. That man is capable of making better entertainment than he has recently.

I wanted to like Tetris - the beginning was compelling, Taron was perfect as usual (his American accent is flawless!) - it reminded me of that awesome Netflix documentary series about gaming, that infectious energy - but once the whole Cold War bullshit started it was so damn heavy-handed I thought I was watching War Games or Red Dawn or some other "Russkies = BAD!" terribly written 80s movie. The only thing that was missing was a car chase...which they slapped on the end. In real life, the KGB was not a true factor, instead Atari was one of the big baddies but I guess that doesn't fit the US gloriousness angle

AND, ECCENTRIC!!! I KNOW!!! ME, TOO!!!! ON AFTERBURNERS!!!!!! I CAN ONLY IMAGINE WHAT IT WOULD FEEL LIKE TO BUY THE 8 BEDROOM, 4 BATHROOM HOUSE(a mansion, if I was going to live there. And, if I could renovate the whole place. Unless, it has original Victorian architecture, furniture, everything, as it was, but indoor plumbing, & electrical. Huge fireplace in each bedroom, a view from every terrace, at the top of each bedroom on the 3rd floor. WIFI!
