I think the point of schools is to groom us to accept 8-5 or 9-5 for 5 days a week (just like school). The vast majority of school is dull, boring, and useless in real life (just like most jobs)

This year I turned 43, with 22 years in the railroad I've been working for. I started to really feel the job was sucking the life out of me last year, and was stuck paying on bad debt I acquired over the years, as well as a house payment. In 8 years I will have my 30 year pension locked in at 51 years old, and though that's not "early" retirement for some, I haven't seen one coworker do it in the 22 years I've worked for this company. They all talk about it, but all work until they are 60-64 trying to pay off their loans, put their kids through school, and have nice cars. Back in June I sold my house as well as a lot of my things. I paid off all my dumb debts and loans, invested $20k in dividend stocks, and am renting a cheap apartment. If and when this real estate bubble bursts, my plan is to buy a duplex and live in it. I have 8 years to build a dividend income high enough to survive on, while I transition into my own company in my early 50's (safety net). At 60 my dividends will just be travel money, because my railroad pension will be $50k a year. I wish I saw videos like this 10 years ago or I would have got down to business earlier.

I actually feel so lucky, that i have kind of experienced "the rat race". During my first internship last year . Now i have learnt plenty of useful skills and i am on my way to be financially independent.

    • @JamesAutoDude
      @JamesAutoDude 3 роки тому +4

It's so true. I think if you don't experience it then you won't love financial independence as much compared to if you didn't experience it.
It's actually how a lot of people fail because they were either given passive income from a parent who passed away, or simply they were lucky, and they take advantage and lose it all.

I would also included not having children as another step to escape the rat race, Ryan. Having a child or more not only does a number on your money and expenses, but raising a child will also take a lot of time that you could be spending for yourself for life goals and travel.

Excellent advice! Last fall I quit a job that I had me stuck in the rat race mentality for almost nine years. I'm getting the heck out of Washington, DC and relocating to South America later where I can have a decent standard of living for a third of what it would cost in the U.S. I'm also planning to use my savings to start a business. When you think independently and got plenty of energy, working a 9 to 5 in a toxic environment is the last thing you need. Life is too short.

So don't be fooled by this "how to video". Its not meant to help you, its just this dude explaining what worked for him. Keep in mind he left a kick ass job so he probably had a good amount saved and probably paid off his car or his house prior to quitting his job.

Quit the rat race permanently in February 2003 and I agree with every single thing you've said. I would however put it slightly differently. My steps would be
    1. Minimize expenses to the barest minimum and pay down all debt. Sell EVERYTHING that's costing you ANYTHING to keep. Huge fancy house with huge mortgage included.
    2. SAVE, SAVE, SAVE as much as possible to develop a financial nest egg quick.
    3. OWN THY HOME free and clear. Even if it means moving to a working class neighborhood where homes are cheap/affordable. I bought my 2br 1ba small home CASH in 2002 and that was the BEST investment I ever made. The joy of having no rent/mortgage to pay for the rest of your life cannot be put in words. Whenever I have moved since, I always bought my next home cash or built cash.
    4. SAVE SAVE SAVE some more once you own thy home. INVEST that money in passive income sources.
    5. PASSIVE INCOME+OWNING THY HOME = FINANCIAL INDEPENDENCE/TIME FREEDOM
I have never earned more than 25,000 USD in a single year my whole life, yet I have traveled all 7 continents except Antarctica. Not bragging, but just showing the power of the steps above.
Good luck and God bless all

Just wondering what common but ornery obstacles you had to overcome if any such as depression, limiting beliefs, self doubt, homelessness etc?
Steps are good when all the variables are in good shape but even taking a step can be challenging if there's ice on the step, a wasp is chasing you before you plant your foot, or the neighbor's kid's baseball smacks you in the eye unexpectedly while you stepping foot is in midair lol.

Hey Ryan, great vid. What do you do for health insurance? That's been the biggest question for me. Getting enough passive incoming or getting to a portfolio goal is doable, but the insurance cost in the US is just crazy. Especially if you have a family.
