Ray Charles Robinson (September 23, 1930 - June 10, 2004), known professionally as Ray Charles, was an American singer, songwriter, musician, and composer. He was sometimes referred to as "The Genius", and was also nicknamed "The High Priest of Soul".
He pioneered the genre of soul music during the 1950s by combining rhythm and blues, gospel, and blues styles into the music he recorded for Atlantic Records. He also contributed to the racial integration of country and pop music during the 1960s with his crossover success on ABC Records, most notably with his two Modern Sounds albums. While he was with ABC, Charles became one of the first African-American musicians to be granted artistic control by a mainstream record company.
Charles was blind from the age of seven. Charles cited Nat King Cole as a primary influence, but his music was also influenced by jazz, blues, rhythm and blues, and country artists of the day, including Art Tatum, Louis Jordan, Charles Brown, and Louis Armstrong. Charles' playing reflected influences from country blues, barrelhouse, and stride piano styles. He had strong ties to Quincy Jones, who often cared for him and showed him the ropes of the "music club industry."

Or ears to hear some of the most profound music ever
🎯
That's for sure.
We all have our sorrows ............ ♥🤞
The drummer deserves some serious credit! Wow!
What was him
You are absolutely right. The drummer created so many amazing textures! It’s because of him that a good song became great.
Drummer is Milt Turner
I agree. Just as great as Ray himself.
Everybody involved deserves serious credit, partner.....
It's physically impossible to hear this without tapping your toes.
Or rocking your head in the beat.
Correct 👌👌👌
Damn was laying in bed, read this comment, and realized my toes were tapping the air
I was doing that while i scrolled down and seen your comment
C'est exactement Ça !!!
The drum part is extraordinary ! Paul McCartney said one of the reasons they wanted Ringo to join the band is because he could play the drum part to this song !
That’s why I Feel Fine uses this pattern :)

Like the Stones, the Beatles were individually and collectively all 100 rooted in early '50s American blues greats...Paul fell in love with Elvis when he was sick in bed, George embraced Fats Domino, John drew upon Chuck Berry and the Everly Bros. And Ringo loved Lightning Hopkins.
Of course, Ray Charles was a powerful influence too!
61 years later, this song is still smokin'
Take it to the house kid
so ahead of his time
Indeed. Vintage masterpiece.
This track is the eseence of Ray Charles.
It's just so groovy and sexy. I mean, when you turn it up it makes the hair on your neck stand up!
Charles created this song on stage to fill lime remaining in his contract. No rehersal...all off the cuff. Brilliant !!!
Really? Astounding!
The young people back then were more cultured! Also, most of their music was GOOD. Hence the appreciation.
@@FederazioneCiclisticaItaliana right back at you.
The fact that his band could pull it off really says something about how tight they were.
@the teetto and @ Mustapha Aazim, why don't you go listen to Cheb Mami or Rachid Tahar? Me i don't listen music from people i do not like you see what i mean, Ray Charles is not talking to your people, so stop annoying cursing. Hard to believe its been 20 years already.
This is one of those songs that blew me away on first listen. Usually it takes me several listens to "get" a song, but not this one. A timeless classic.

I agree!

I can't believe this was made in 59' sounds more like mid 60's.
Set the standard
Cause it was ripped off and made one of the biggest hits in the 60s by the Doors lol
It was getting towards the start, all decades are like that. Gets a lot different towards the end than when it started
@@brandongauger4050 'Break on through' i guess, there is a video where another "Ray" Manzarek (Pianist) used this same baseline. Well they steal from anybody.
This was early rock onset. Mixing the fast pace blues with blue grass.

Nothing left to say…..GENIUS!
Why can't pop/rock music nowadays sound anywhere near this level?
Guys, if you're in your 20's and listening to this, I have some advice: The first time you invite your girl to your house/apartment, put this on the stereo. Forget the video games, movies, or hard rock or lovey dovey crap. Put this on. Put it on repeat. Crank it up. You'll thank me later!
Nah. Netflix and chill works better.
@@BuyTheDip627 That shit is boring. Spice it up man. Have some imagination. Brother Ray will never let ya down!!! You ever dance with a chick to this? i can see it brother. thank you will do
Till the horns enter at almost 4 minutes? THAT is a 3-piece band centered around a little Wurlitzer electric piano with about 63 keys that sold for a couple/few hundred bucks back in the day! That is also what's called SOUL! Wurlitzer shoulda paid Brother Ray for the only advertisement they'd EVER need for a "Wurly" for more than half a century! ...WOW!
Thank you Blues Brothers for getting me into Ray Charles. He is truly the definition of a legend.
He manages to not only notice someone trying to steal, but shoot at them, and nearly miss them.
Deadley Spawn: I would kindly add: thanks Mom for playing bigg Ray Ray on the phonograph, still listening at 59..
Who still kicking this in 2022
I love and miss RAY
I love that album art. It's like Ray is so chill even his piano smokes a fat one. Lol
LOL--True!
Had me rolling
HAHAHAHA!!!
Ray's fabulous and the drummer's the real deal!
You got that right! Ray goes unsaid as one of the best ever, but the way that drummer is ringing that cymbal is unreal!!
@@michaelbarnett7691 Ringo got the gig with The Beatles, partly because he could play a version of this. Their previous drummers couldn't. Brother Ray's drummer is the business. Stay healthy.

@@michaelbarnett7691 He in THE ZONE Mike !
Ray Charles had more talent in his left pinky finger than most artists have in their entire being; he was an innovator and musical genius. I always liked Ray Charles when I was a little kid (I was born in ‘79, so I grew up listening to Ray. Georgia being the first song of his that I remember hearing) and now that I’m 40 years old, I love Ray Charles and I have a huge appreciation for his musical contributions and talents.
I was born in the 2000s but I still love anything by ray Charles
And Jamie Foxx did a helluva representation in Ray. JF actually perform the songs
this song is like the nucleus of soul music
This song truly gave birth to soul music as we would later know it. And dozens of labels and artists have spent years trying to match it.
Old music soul music
We still have soul music, only now its sell your soul music.
I like to add that it is an intricate part of DNA and brings forth more wonder full character traits😅
Milt Turner absolutely killed it on this one. A great Drummer that needs to be known by all. One of my favorite Ray Jams!
Listen to "Luck Be A Lady" by vibraphonist (and pianist) Eddie Costa, with Bill Evans, p. Wendell Marshall, bass, and PAUL MOTIAN, drums!!! He does on this song what MiltTurner did on What'd I Say!
ua-cam.com/video/LMjgYcACmgE/v-deo.html
Agree! A few great drummers on Blues recordings during fifties and sixties who never received the recognition they deserved

61 years later and this still rocks!!!
Ray Charles ran out of songs to perform in a concert and in return, created the greatest song in the first year of Billboard 100 history.
