Ugh, maybe not strong feelings but i have feelings. Spoilers: I don't love that Santangel is entirely dependant on Luzia for daily life. He was trapped in a similar situation for generations. Now, it's with his Love, but he's still in a cage that he can't get out of without suicide. It undermines the happiness of the ending, of their romance
@@ChloeFrizzle You make a strong point! It’s definitely a happy…for now sort of ending, and my heart does hurt a bit for his fate. And thinking about Luzia going on and getting older, it’s all very temporal with the life they can share together. It’s painful for them both, either way.
Loved your review almost as much as I loved the book. I have not been a Leigh Bardugo fan; I tried Ninth House, but only read the first few chapters; I only watched the first episode of "Shadow & Bone." When I learned that this book would be set in Madrid, just after 1588, I had to read it! I have been an hispanophile most of my life. In your review you expressed many of the feelings the book evoked in me. Thank you!
Ah, that is super nice of you to say!! I’ll take it! I’ve been enjoying her adult work much much more than her YA, although I do find her Grishaverse pretty imaginative and love me some Darkling 🤣 Ninth House got better and better for me as I went along and I think I enjoyed Hell Bent even more. I’m a huge fan of her Language of Thorns collection-she’s very talented as a dark fairy tale tone of writer, which The Familiar channels a lot of, I think. She’s definitely got me interested in finding more Spanish stories, so if you have any recs, I’d love to hear them!
OMG!!!! Well said… they all wanted something… it was a very dark and realistic look at the wanting of a person.. whether it is emotional or materialistic. the ending was making me very sad..😔 until the Very End (Epilogue) 🦂.. I really enjoyed this video
Ahhh…thank you, Kiki, for your comment! I loved the ending too! It was such an artistic, haunting sort of happy ending in a way, but it just worked. Such a unique love story.
I recently finished this novel and I enjoyed the history and story! Though those multiple POVs (even though it’s in third person) have me a bit of whiplash 😂 I’m glad it was in third person because if it were in first person with all those different POVs, I would’ve chucked it at the wall, can’t lie… 😅
@@NicolesBookishNook Honestly, I would’ve too! I feel like first person is best when you get to sit in that perspective longer. At least in The Familiar, you almost feel like you’re watching these people and the choices they make!
Any strong feelings out there about the ending? 🦂

I feel like it would be so much more powerful if she let him go. They have one night together but her last act of love is letting him free.
I need a whole book about the Holy Child, she was such a cool character.
Oohhh-I would love that! Definitely a fascinating character.
Leigh, some spinoffs would be super cool!
@@butterflymuse2707 Really hope to get more… maybe these loose ends are Leigh’s way of leaving the back door unlocked 🤞🏼
I finished yesterday and I can’t believe Valentina became my favourite character in the end! Especially how she chooses to live her life in the end.
Her character arc was beautiful! Wholeheartedly agree 🖤
i finished it yesterday and i really loved it. just searched up the familiar on youtube and your video came up. Loved your discussion. 🦂
Thank you-that made my morning! I’m glad you loved the book. It really was a unique story to anything I’ve read recently! 🖤

So many possible endings! Not the way I had hoped it would go, but far from disappointed. Fantastic book!
It really is!
Omg. Thank you for this. I didn’t know if I was going to pick it up.
Ha!! I aim to serve! 💜

You do such a great job of relating other books and authors to the book you're discussing!
P.S. Play MORE FFVII!

@@SandrasLibrary yes, exactly that!
This is now one of my fave books ever. It is so so beautiful! ❤
Oh, I love to hear that! The Familiar is sooooooo good! 🖤🦂
I just finished this book, trying to figure out why i didn't quite love it. Thanks for your review
Definitely the kind of story I need to be in the mood to read. But did think the writing and the romantic tension between them was swoon!
Popping in for the beginning because I know I want to read this and don't want to be spoiled
THANK YOU! 🥹🖤 I am so grateful for you stopping by!
