The 'métaboles', that magnificent work for orchestra, directed by Chelibidache: an outstanding event ! I think that I know pretty well 'Métaboles', but I discovered some points which had escaped to me thanks to the direction of Chelibidache. Metaboles is a word derived from Ancient Greek that we could translate by "transmutations", which in musical language would be deeper than "variations". Dutilleux obviously starts from this tradition to make it a quite personal elaboration. Freedom in his language, somehow rooted in the tradition, is an unique tool to achieve Dutilleux' goal.
These metaboles are in fact advanced variations. Ec=ach of the metaboles has a mood of its own, defined in iy=ts title. This score us undeed a masterpiece, and the conducting of the great Chelibidache makes them more transparent.
To jli136: Dutilleux composed this in 1964 so that why to you it sounds like 60's sci fi soundtrack. That's NOT what he intended it to be. The first time I heard this work , I was impressed as it was on the flip side of an LP that also had Honneger's 4th Symphony. Those were the days when classical LP's had two entirely different types of music on each side.
I ahd also this record and this is how I listened a,g got familiar with this core. I had previously been impressed by the second symphony " la Double", carefully heard on radio ("France Musique").

Without doubt, this is the best interpretation which I have ever heard.
