I really enjoyed this video, but I should point out that this "show" was an OVA. It's not that it was cancelled after only three episodes... It was (most likely) made with only these three episodes in mind. OVAs specifically were created to be short-run, direct-to-VHS (or Laserdisc) series that were given greater budgets than a full 24 (or whatever) episodes of an actual TV show.

My favorite animes are OVAs. The original Dangaioh (1987 with Pai Thunder) is my #1 favorite. I've found with OVA series the quality is just fantastic so I totally understand what your saying.

Came here to say this. So weird as this info is readily available on the Wiki page, and is a really important part of the context of what this series was. OVAs were allowed to be more violent and sexual, and concentrate their budget on less episodes, which achieved higher quality animation. Its why a lot of 90s anime has the quality it has, which he mentions yet seems to have no idea why. The most rudimentary research of his subject would have brought this to attention.

I haven't researched the series myself, but some OVAs are made into shows sometimes (albeit, in a dumb way, which expands say--two OVAs into a 4-part miniseries).
The opposite also happens, a series gets turned into OVAs to get new fans the same story or give better style and budget to an aging series.
"The History of Trunks" is one of DBZ's more liked 40-minute OVAs, and it was later incorporated into the tv show as a two-part episode.

Many OVAs or OAVs were optioned by Japanese studios in the '80s with the intention of being stand alone explorations of IP with the hope that were they successful, the studio could then leverage said IP into an ongoing series. So the video above isn't wrong in the sense that seeing a syndicated TV series grow out of the first three episodes would have been an acute possibility that was never realised.

Oh this is actually kinda interesting. If we use the Orwellian class system of 1984:
      1. The Ruling class or Dracula class would be the corporations and governmental institutions that seek to benefit at the expense of everyone else.
      2. The Educated class or Ghost class perfectly shows the encouraged depravity of peoples' whose ambition have been exploited by "a system that makes men torture."
      3. The Worker class or Frankenstein Class represents a majority of people who are subject to the whim of the above without the power to change it.
Had this series continued we might have seen Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde as the promising people who could advance the world. But whose skills are squandered due to this wicked society preference for "short term gains over long term progress".
If you want to know what’s up with those quotes, number one is from Charlie Chaplin's speech in The Great Dictator, while the other one is related to a discussion between Quark and Nog from Star Trek DS9 regarding what humanity has accomplished in 5000 years.

Yeah, but the reason why pirates are often depicted with peg legs, eyepatches, or both is because being a sailor was extremely dangerous and often resulted in the loss of limbs, or other disfigurement.
In a world where companies find it easier to get a machine to to a job (a world we are already partially in and still careening further into), becoming part machine will be seen as highly marketable. When something becomes marketable, many people adopt it as an aesthetic.
Going back to my original statement, sailing was not the only marketable skill in the 1700’s, and a lost limb, or eye, would often result in a decrease in performance. In cyberpunk, replacing a limb can almost always make it more functional. That’s why you see most people embracing cyber mods, while you wouldn’t see it in real life in historic, or contemporary scenarios.

    • @thoughtengine
      @thoughtengine 2 роки тому +3

Yes, and outside of settings like Rifts, you can't fire energy bolts or generate shields with a tattoo or piercing. People have all kinds of reasons for bio-mechanical augments, which could be to make themselves a more powerful bully, a more destructive soldier, or just so they can have the limb usable again after accidents or diseases rob them of them. This could lead to all kinds of totally cyberpunk stories, like Cybernetics Destroys Your Soul plots, what augmentation is really morally acceptable, what they have to do to get the stuff eg. end up in huge debt, steal parts and have dodgy doctors fit them, cyber-snatching etc.
And then, what will the characters be afterwards?
What I'm really thinking, here, is that comparing real-life tattoos, fashion and piercings to bio-mechanical and even bio-techno augmentation in cyberpunk is like comparing a picture of a vehicle with a real one - one is just an image, the other has physical functions in the real world. You can't get into a picture and drive to a distant location.

Maybe if you're a blue collar worker. White collar, your mods won't be as visually obvious, which might mean that modifications won't be so attractive. The bourgeoisie that prized fair skin, as it meant that they didn't have to do hard labor in the sun. Like he mentioned, the general population might want to stay as they are, because it suggests that they were already good to begin with, no augmentations required. Another feather on the cap.

Very nice to see one of my favourite OVAs getting some recognition. Decades before I became small time "internet famous," I used to contribute to a fanzine based on it with other people from the UK anime convention scene in the early 90s, then revisited it years later when I became a translator to find that it's equally but differently great in both English dub and Japanese original dub. I also very much appreciate the effort Rory Mcfarlane took in composing a completely new soundtrack. Back then we only had access to the VHS tapes but nowadays you can just slap on the DVD, switch between Japanese/English music and dialogue and easily compare how the mood of certain scenes are affected by the different musical choices, and Cyber City is probably the only anime where I prefer the English dub and music. The Japanese language in general just doesn't really do swearing or sarcasm, so Sengoku especially sounds very chilled out in the original Japanese compared to the sick burn dispenser he is in the dub.
I don't know, just all round great stuff that could really only have been made in Japan's bubble era, along with stuff like Bubblegum Crisis, Akira, Birth, Gunbuster etc. We just don't see art and animation as detailed and technical as this anymore, and you just know that all those cybernetic augments would be out of place looking 3D objects if they were to make more now.

Interestingly, Cyberpunk 2077 (for all its flaws) show body modification in just the kind of light you suggested - most visible body mods are on the poor who can't afford the high-end invisible stuff, or the body mod extremists, or celebrities out to shock. Most upper crust are shown with the bare minimum visible, with at most having replaced their faces with idealized perfect faces in ways that aren't always obvious. Adam Smasher is an extreme example of those who get combat modifications to stay ahead of everyone else, Johnny Silverhand himself is a war veteran, which is why his arm is so blatantly a prosthetic, but is otherwise not visibly augmented by all that much.

Indeed. It's a straw man argument that often gets thrown around by folks really more familiar with these characters from the movies or from memes. Very rarely in the comics do they actually go up against anyone that powerful and when they do it is almost never the initial Mission they are sent out on, more of a situation where those people show up to stop them or deal with a larger problem that has unfolded tangentially connected to the squad's mission.

Just wanted to highlight that we do (sort of) know why they're serving life sentences. In the opening montage for the series where their names, bios and (oddly) racial makeups show up on the screen, we can see that all three of the heroes were guilty of, at the very least, murder. I want to say Gogul and Benten/Merill were also drug runners, but I haven't seen this series in about a year or so. So they're all (as far as we know) serving justifiable life sentences, although as you mentioned the circumstances are vague at best.

When describing the body mods you are neglecting the superhuman abilities, or just the general functionality the implants grant, when compared to a purely aesthetic modification like tattoos and piercings. It would be more akin to investing in a piece of equipment, or a vehicle, or even surgery such as a knee replacement being just getting your legs replaced. I do agree that making them scarce does give them more impact narratively, but in real life i believe they could catch on as the practical demand for them could rise, which would over time lead to it becoming a more widespread practice in general.

I feel like a lot of the problem with modern day Cyberpunk is that it kind of mindlessly fetishizes the Blade Runner look without understanding any of the substance or context behind it. It's all big neon lights and holograms and people with whacky body mods, but none of the actual understanding of why those things are presented in the first place. They appropriate the general aesthetic without understanding the meaning, and even if they do it's often paid lip service as opposed to being genuinely explored.

Fantastic overview of one of my favorite anime OVAs. I actually think the 3-episode length works perfectly for it, to be honest. It also only feels fresher in today's climate considering that prison labor is a worsening issue and most modern cyberpunk media amounts to "super cop on steroids blows out the back of a sexaroid while headshotting poor people."
I would also like to call attention to Yoshiaki Kawajiri's direction. Most Westerners dismiss the vast majority of anime directors in favor of aping the surface level elements of Hayao Miyazaki's films, but I think a lot of Western animation creatives could learn a lot about animation direction, storyboarding, and color palettes from Kawajiri's works. What a lot of Western animators try to convey through character animation/acting, Kawajiri conveys through the storyboard. His works feature excellent animation to be sure, but so much of what makes them effective is the consistently clear and stellar shot composition.

I always had the same time thoughts about cybernetic implants, would a person really cut off a perfectly functional limb to have it replaced with a mechanical augmentation? I think a lot of people, if they are being honest, would say no. But I can think of a reason people would have these types of body modifications against their will.
In a society where capitalism is completely out of control, I would assume worker's rights are nearly non-existent. Health and Safety would be trumped by profit and productivity, in blue collar jobs serious injury would be more common place. Cyberwear could be used to keep employees productive. Or, alternatively, maybe as a part of their contract of employment, they have to accept body modifications to work in a hostile environment. This would make cybernetics a sign of "working-class" pedigree, like tattoos.

Is not that crazy, I mean we have aesthetic surgeries skyrocketing.. It depends on the cost and if the trend catch on.... Obviously not every one would but id be more common that we might think; and it doesnt have to be something that can be seen but a functonal implant, I can realistically see ppl implating in them machines that can do what our phones do now in a discrete manner

      @midnightmosesuk 2 роки тому +1

@@Sordatos I think there's a big difference between a purely cosmetic procedure and a procedure as radical as a cybernetic prosthetic. Even a breast enhancement is minor surgery in comparison. You'd be looking at a whole body parts being cut away and replaced by a machine. I can see your point with some discreet body parts being useful. I imagine an eye, for example, equipped like a pair of smart glasses but with a higher level of tech with a small phone implant with a bone induction speaker would be cool. I could see that, but I also imagine something that sophisticated being out of the reach of the common man.
I can also imagine poorer people who desire that sort of tech having an implant that does the same thing but with adverts being beamed straight into your eye and into your skull to pay towards the cost of installation.

1:50 Somebody finally came out and said it. But I'd say the key point is less Cyberpunk, more dystopian future. They're close but not 100% the same? For example, I wouldn't call the Running Man Cyberpunk as it's more special effects then technical effects. But the main point as it relates to Suicide Squad? "Bombs are implanted in people's necks but it's presented as a common thing? Talk about unchecked power."
Rat girl there commits one crime of attempted grand larceny but gets punished with a literal "life of death" sentence... and people think it's fun.
But I LOVE Cyber City Edo 808. These guys are scum worth rooting for, unapologetic and utterly convicted.

Love the video. I agree with the topic of the amount of body modification in cyberpunk media.
The only cyberpunk film that *I’ve seen* where body modification is a thing and most people don’t have it is Nirvana 1998.
In that film it’s rare to see people with body mods. One of the character is blind and has a gruesome eye mod cause he was poor and got it in the black market. Rich people have internal body mods that are basically invisible cause they could afford good surgeons. one of the themes of the film is this blind character desperately trying to make money to get ‘new eyes’.
I really wish newest cyberpunk media would explore this topic a bit more.

Fantastic video on one of my favourites. This show has a big following amongst older UK anime fans as it was shown on Channel 4 in '95 and was a lot of people's first adult anime show. Also I highly recommend watching the UK Manga Entertainment dub. It's over-the-top cheese with wall-to-wall swearing but it works with the show. Also that dub features a different score, which may be sacrilege to some, but it fits the show better than the kind of bland Japanese score. Cyber City was recently given a blu-ray release that features the UK, US, and Japanese versions.

To comment on your point addressing the ubiquity of body modifications in a cyberpunk setting, I would argue that it makes total sense for a society driven by out of control corporate greed to be hyper focused on the aesthetic of of power as a virtue in leu of having any power themselves. It also makes sense that their wouldn't be a strong moral outcry against these things since the institutions that would be traditionally opposed to extreme body modification would be the church or some other religious organization. With the primary theme of cyberpunk being overwhelming corporate control it makes sense that religion and the state would have very little influence as the arbiters of what is moral and what is just respectfully.

On top of your thematic point, I would say that an interface between machine and human nervous system would be too good for anyone who can afford it to pass up. It'd likely turn people into superhumans that can live 10x longer, run faster than Usain Bolt, lift heavier than the strongest people in the world, think faster than the smartest, have perfect teeth, skin, vision, perfect mental and physical health, etc. It'd be too useful and desirable to pass up. People who reject it will likely be unable to compete in the workplace, for example, or even gain social acceptance if they can't physically or mentally compete with these enhanced superhumans.

This was a very interesting watch! I don't consume a lot of cyberpunk media, it's not usually my thing, but this definitely made me think about it in ways I don't usually.
The only thing I disagree with is the body augmentation, and disagree is a strong word- but I think the body augmentation thing in cyberpunks actually a lot less cool and about autonomy than is usually presented. I know a lot of trans people who love the trope in particular, but it being the norm in the worlds of cyberpunk mean either 2 things to me-
    1) it isn't a progression of the tattoos and piercing and tongue modifications, its a progression of socially acceptable forms of body mods, like breast implants, or lipo. Rather than being the counter culture growing stronger, what is considered normal and good and beautiful is different, which feeds into my other way of viewing it-
    2) It's just. capitalism. I know it's common for people do do their OWN body mods in cyberpunk media, but if everyone has that and it's normalised- i think it would just be a result of companies realising that they can make more money by pushing for more and more outrageous body mods. Plus, imagine how much they would make selling the items needed for upkeep on bionic arms and such... oil, new coats of paint (you need to keep with the seasons trends after all), i guess the thing I would compare it to now is how women are forced to shave because razor companies wanted to make more money
