This movie is proof of how a good direction can elevate a bad script. I find it very underrated, i like how sicl and twisted it is. The production design, practical effects, cinematography, music, casting, is all great.

The main issue is that there just aren't enough alien scenes. I don't except the very long final scene with the hybrid alien as being proper alien content and it is far too empty and stretched out of a sequence.

The problem is that the film is extremely tonally inconsistent, where Juenet's highbrow direction coupled with Joss Whedon's typical cringey dialogue clash horribly. It's a film that doesn't know what it really wants to be. The problem is that the the film's director treats the material with the utmost seriousness as is his style, but the script is otherwise and was clearly meant for a more "schlocky" film.
I disagree that the casting is good because it really isn't. The casting is bizarre and is one of the film's weakest elements imo. It's a bad movie, but at least a watchable one due to the exceptional production design and effects.

As do I! I was not prepared for the tone of Alien 3 and was disappointed seeing it on opening night in '92. Alien Resurrection was goofy and we got a prototypical Serenity crew and it was a lot more fun.
Jean-Pierre Jeunet was an inspired choice to bring something quirky and different to the series. I already loved City of Lost Children and he would go on to make Amelie which is my favorite of his films.
On top of that the cast is fantastic and some of the dialogue is fun.
Primitive CGI aside, the xenos swimming after our cast underwater was terrifying and that aspect still holds up.
The newborn is just weird though. It was horrific but also goofy as hell. The similar concept of the Newborn in Alien Romulus was far more effective for me.

For years I thought the "Fury 16" name was an error, till about a month ago where I found a piece of notes on ALIEN³ mentioning that Fiorina 161 was the prison planet, which orbits 2 Suns named Fury 16A and Fury 16B, while the system itself is actually named Fury 16. This was not explained on film nor novelization on A.RESURRECTION, but it cleared out the apparent mistake, which Gediman was intended to refer to the system and not the planet Fiorina itself.
What's also obscure that this comes from another unused script for ALIEN³ which was repurposed for the Vin Diesel movie PITCH BLACK is the name FURYA and its people the FURYANS is what remained of its used for ALIEN³.

I was 8 years old when this movie came out and it was my entry into the series. It captured my imagination then and still holds an important place in heart. So many of the outlandish concepts in this film that get criticized today are exactly what made it so cool as a kid. I was fascinated by the half human/ half alien Ripley. She was basically a superhero. In the same year as this film we got Batman & Robin, another panned outlandish movie. Similarly, as weird and disturbing as this film is, I really feel like it’s target audience was kids my age. This was a decade when kids basically ruled the cinema, and studios were making edgy films just dumb enough to sell to them. Anyone who doesn’t appreciate it should try looking at it through that lens.

Regarding Ripley 8 and the picture of the young girl.
Would it be Newt or Amanda, or a combination of the two that triggers the melancholic reaction?
Speaking as a parent, I don't think I could elevate someone whom I only knew for a few days (even taking into consideration what they both went through) over my own child, even if the surrogate was a direct reminder of said child.
The mother/child theme is further explored with the newborn which is again evidence she has not lost that maternal instinct and that Ripley still misses her daughter, badly. So whilst her relationship with Newt was intense, although brief, it is the memory of her own flesh and blood which triggers that reaction.

I recently did a rewatch of Resurrection after watching Alien Expanded. I did skip from just before 'the birth' to just after the end of the fight. The acting and character development was enough to tell a great story. Thank you for doing this dive! The picture of the girl was Newt and/or Amanda- regardless worth a few tears. I'm glad they left out the WalMart line. I like the changes to mercs' intro scenes, extending the scene with Purvis had real nice touches, the scene with the aliens gracefully navigating the water will always be one of the best scenes to me, adding the memory of Newt was definitely an improvement, and the last scene was ok but ending in space looking down on Earth gives a sense of hidden hope and leaves more to the imagination..

I don't know if the Alien who got killed so the others could escape was a noble sacrifice, but it did look in some distress as it was being mauled by the other. In Ripleys defense, it wasn’t for a percentage. It was, as you said, so they could escape. But whatever brother😊 it’s a MOVIE, a work of fiction. Right? Right?? And they’re ALIENS in a MOVIE. We don’t understand, subjectively, their values because they’re ALIENS. And it wasn’t written into the screenplay that we should. Because they’re aliens. ALIENS. And who knows, maybe they COULD have some kinda xenomorph economy and maybe, MAYBE when they killed our hole-maker(that’s all it was, in all seriousness) it was to increase their overall profits for whatever weird bug business they were involved in. If that IS true, then the two that escaped CLEARLY can’t trust each other and should be watching over their shoulders and (do they sleep? Have eyes? They do, I remember now…) sleeping with one eye open lest they become a statistic…being compiled by some xeno-statistician see where this is going??? Ridiculous. (I’m just poking fun at you a little😊sorry, I went a bit too far….damn. We ARE the worst species)

I think this movie could have been a great addition to the franchise if a few things were different. They should have stuck with the really creepy atmosphere and vibe instead of mixing in goofy stuff, maybe they did that on purpose so it wouldnt be too dark, but obviously the goofy stuff didnt go over too well. They had some great practical effects in that movie, but the cgi was kinda bad. They should have kept that new born in the dark more as well, that thing would have been a lot more creepy if it wasn't so well lit as soon as it was introduced, sort of like they did it with the new born from romulus. I wish there was a bit more of an explanation as to why there was almost no army guys on a massive military ship and the few that were there just evacuated right away instead of trying to fight back. Also, it probably would have been better if our main cast of characters weren't total pieces of human garbage, Im all good with anti heros, but kidnapping people in cryo sleep and selling them into what would be certain death leaves them with little room to have any redeeming characteristics.

Personally rate Alien Resurrections above Aliens 3, it doesn't take itself as dark as it probably should and serious moments are undercut with a joke (typical Josh humor) but the practical effects are arguably the best of any of the films, how it plays into the Alien Life-cycle in a neat ways while staying true to the lore, the set designs and Signore acting are all so damn good and it was refreshing to see characters in universe comment on how badass she is. None of usual doubt and skepticism you get in every other film up to this point.
Also the Newborn is also still the most disturbing thing out of the entire franchise to me, its a disgusting hybrid between the two but the pure humanity and wetness to its eyes and infant calls just put it above anything else.
Its not a perfect film by any stretch, almost none of the CGI holds up, previously mentioned jokes undercutting serious moments, the lighting is too warm and brightly lite in places and how they used the Queen for the actual film was just a waste. But that is all I really have to say in terms of negatives for the film.

I have a lot of fun and respect for this movie. It's my favorite of the series but I like them all, for different reasons. Every installment has its own look and feel and I think that is what keeps them popular and interesting.
Ridley has gone back to the more haunted ship type of story but the newer iterations don't have the same feel or star power.
After the dark and gritty A3, this was a welcome relief. Still plenty violent but with more fun and interesting characters and certainly better dialog😂😂. It's a movie not trying to take itself too seriously, while providing enough action and suspense to warrant multiple viewing. I could pop 3 or 4 in ,most anytime.

I’ve always rather liked this film, at the time I felt it helped fix the mess Alien 3 had made and put the franchise back on track… and then we got no sequels. 😢 The scene with the Ripley clones was really chilling, definitely the highpoint of the movie in terms of unique ideas. I would have liked to have seen the original white spider Newborn fight in a junkyard on Earth for the ending, but it was probably beyond CGI technology of the time without spending much more than they usually spent on Alien films.
The disappointing Newborn design aside, my only real problem with the film are the Aliens. They’re just covered in buckets of slime and drip gunge everywhere. Their fingers are lumpy three fingered things instead of the usual six or seven fingers the xenos normally have. I think the filmmakers were trying to imply that, like Ripley‘s mixed DNA, these cloned Aliens have human characteristics, but I just think all the slime was unnecessary and reduced the Aliens to mindless, slobbering Hollywood monsters instead of the “perfect life form”.

    • @GuineaPigExpress
      @GuineaPigExpress Місяць тому +1

Resurrection was meant to be be funny... Joss Weedon would add humour into the dialogue and Jean Pierre Jeunet is a maker of black comedies - A City Of Lost Children is one. It was never trying to capture the mood of Alien or Aliens... I think one reason why they made it so far into the future was to distance itself from the consequences of the original movies, allowing it to be more a mixture of light and dark, a more traditional cinema horror (typical of the 70s) rather than the more dystopian misery of the original alien worlds

I have quite a soft spot for this entry. The characters are actually quite fun to me, I really like Ripley 8. As far as the call backs are concerned, they didn't take away for me personally as they make sense in this movies' case since a lot of them come directly from Ripley 8 since she seems to be experiencing memories of her past in bits and pieces triggering emotions she doesn't quite understand. I think it really works well for her character development.
The aliens are pretty well thought out too with how they look and act since they are an amalgamation of Ripley's DNA and their own. And as far as the Newborn is concerned, I really don't see the absolute dumb side to it, it makes sense to me. The Xenomorphs are a mystery, they are perfect organisms that can adapt to their situation and surroundings, so for something like that to happen with the queen having a child is pretty wild but cool in my honest opinion.
I would have really like to see where the sequels went with this direction, the humor was a bit weird but that could have just been to break the ice a bit whereas the later sequels could have delved into darker territory and horror.

Not on the same level as the first 2, but I always loved this movie. It has a lot of interesting moments. The underwater scene still annoys me because of its unreality. Like, seriously, I can understand Ripley making that trip because of her superior DNA, but I doubt the others' lungs could withstand so long under water.
On other note, I like that people now, with the release of Romulus, compare the Newborn to the Offspring and try to see which one is the most powerful. Personally, I'm team Newborn, but...Could make an interesting video.

    Three thoughts:
    1. I think it’s easier to appreciate Rez as something that happened in the Alien universe, rather than a fourth installment in Ellen Ripley’s character arc, which ended in the fiery furnace of Fury 161. It feels more satisfying as something closer to The Mandalorian or even Rogue One-‘Resurrection: An Alien Story’.
    2. Scott won’t do this, but the best way to conclude the Prometheus prequel story is to set it after Alien Resurrection, with Ripley-8 on a Heart of Darkness-type collision course with David-8 on Orgae 6. The two characters have more than their parallel naming schemes linking them. Thematically, Ripley 8 is the dialectical synthesis of humanity and the xenomorph-a superior creature in every way to David 8’s Nietzschean pretensions, born of monopoly capitalists like Peter Weyland. I wish it would happen, but I doubt whether Scott has ever seen Rez.
    3. I liked Rez a lot more after watching Firefly and Serenity, which are better executions of the whole idea animating Whedon’s screenplay. I also like the numerous Easter eggs tying both series together. That might make an interesting video some day, Alien Theory.
As always, outstanding work. Appreciate your creative passion and output, and I wish you and your loved ones a wonderful end to 2024 and a better new year.
