Resto-Mod 1985 FXR Custom │Build Details and Test Ride
Вставка
- Опубліковано 21 гру 2023
- The Culver's 1985 FXR has been a sort of "family heirloom" for a long time. Because the FXR continues to be such a popular legacy motorcycle, we see a lot of riders upgrading them and preferring them over a lot of the modern offering from Harley. In an effort to continue riding the motorcycle, Rick has replaced many of the critical components to keep it performing at it's peak. Everything from motor mounts, gaskets, brakes, to lighting have been upgraded to a modern part. To top it off the final and most important mod is the S&S crate motor. Nick, talks us through the bike and takes it for a spin.

It is a weird feeling to me to hear talking of these things as heirlooms passed down. Makes me feel sorta old since '85 is when I first got my motorcycle license. I can only say that some of us(your dad included, I hope) are still alive and well. Me and my past bikes: CBR350, GS550, GS550ES, FJ1100(one of the best), GSXR750(the worst of the bunch...'90),ZX7('93 and a damned fine machine), ZX9R, '06 YZFR1, ' 06 CBR600RR. And now, a '23 Low Rider S. Odd to think that dealers would run for cover is asked to work on any of my beloved machines, just because of age. I kept the R1 and it seems to be getting along well enough with the Low Rider S. All is peaceful in the garage.
I hear ya 😮😮
Ive got a 93 FXR, I dont think i’ll ever enjoy another motorcycle as much as this one! The FXR stands out from every other bike in my opinion, especially with some high quality tall shocks, upgraded front end, along with some motorwork and air cleaner + exhaust upgrades!
It’s a special bike that’s for sure! Glad you are enjoying yours!!!
I just completely rebuilt an old “iron barrel” Royal Enfield Bullet 500, down to a new crankshaft and new crankcase bearings. Obviously a very different animal, but the challenges were similar dealing with an older and certainly obsolete machine. Great video and story!
That's rad man. I'm sure you were stoked when it was all done. Huge sense of accomplishment
@@MattLaidlaw Thanks and very stoked! I rebuilt the crankcase in my kitchen and refinished the oil pumps in a bathroom. The entire build happened in a parking space in my apartment garage. I’ve done rebuilds before, but never under these conditions. Incredible sense of accomplishment
FXR the world. I have an 88 anniversary FXRS, I LOVE it.
Really enjoyed this video...I enjoy all the videos from this channel, but this one is kinda special. And John is worth his weight in gold...I envy anyone that's lucky enough to have him work on your bike.
I think one thing I learned is that your shop there is competent and not intimidated by any challenges. I could bring in a bike and get it going again.
Thank you Nick! Love it!
Love this bike. Remember the first feature on this bike years ago. I’m an 80s-90s guy and love vibe I get from my ‘91 FXR. And yeah, when it’s travel with the wife, time I ride my M8 Street Glide.
Great to see an 'older' bike featured on the channel. I'm starting a bottom end rebuild of my EVO Road King. That S&S crater is awfully tempting.
Beautiful build! Love all the different camera angles! Great vlog 🇺🇸
Yes I enjoy it very much 😊 ...
It's a bless to see a unique like this ...
In a Time where "big is better and Mainstream Mode" dominate the Scene ... that was a beauty owener creative "Piece of Art / Heart" ...
Thanks much for showing
Laidlaw's Family 👍👋☺
My project is a 2002 FXDL. Converted from 88ci to 95ci. I’m going to make is club style but chrome instead of black and ice blue metallic (Porsche color)
I love these old bikes. Labor of love. 🤙🏽
What a great ride to have passed down from generation to generation. Sound is amazing. Congratulations Nick!
Thanks, I feel lucky!
All fxr primaries leak and there’s a ton of aftermarket parts good ones for fxr”s… Plenty of independent shops that work on them as well. Enjoyed the video I’ve owned 6 different FXR”s my first was a FXRC in 86..
Very cool. Thanks for the comment. 6! Nice.
the transmission end cover you had was for forward controls, the mid control transmission end cover would have the clutch cable hole coming out of the bottom right to allow room for mid controls
My first brand new Harley was an 89 FXRS. Great bike for its time. This upgraded bike is nice, but is not really the true FXR experience. Sort of like saying I have a 55 panhead with a 96 inch S+S engine, Baker 6 speed and Brembo brakes. Not really a 55 at all. Whatever, I guess you can only review new bikes with different paint for so long on this channel. The travel videos are awesome though!
I love the color ❤❤❤❤......wish it had more chrome
Such a rad bike. Cool to know Nicks dad is part of the Laidlaw lineage too…that’s pretty cool.
Dudes beard says all we need to know about his Harley mechanic level
John is a legend!
😂🤣
Beautiful bike and a fantastic video. Keep content like this coming on top of all your other great videos
Have a wonderful and happy day ☕️👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍👍😊😊😊
Amazing bike from an amazing team, you guys went after it and conquered it
Great vid ,stunning bike absolutely beautiful. Art on wheels love it. Merry Christmas
I have a 87 fxrc in great shape. Been slowly upgrading it over the years, suspension, brakes, cam, carb, cosmetics etc. But would love to pull the trigger some day and put the ss 111 and baker 6 speed along with new clutch basket similar to your bike. Great job!
Great video! Nice job. Bike is so cool and sounds amazing.
Still the best Harley ride out there.
Low Rider, except the slit tank, 5gal Softail Custom. took some learning. FXLR was a great frame, ride setup.
Awesome video that bike looks and sounds great 👍🏽
Nice. I have a 1988 FXRS-SP Lowrider, not as pretty as that one, mine has the original paint job, scratches and chips and all. Mine leaks a little oil, I just park it with cardboard under it. I have spent a lot keeping it on the road. It has hot cam, big carb and a VH set of shotgun type pipes. It sound fantastic and rides really well. I have a sidecar on it most of the time.
Sounds awesome! They are definitely a labor of love. John has lost a few brain cells dealing with this old girl!
If Harley was to bring back the FXR, they'd be doing enthusiasts and themselves a huge service. There's a couple current models they could axe like the Street Bob and the Softail Standard and replace with a new FXR that has a base model with a Milwaukee 8 107. They could even offer a 114 as a higer end engine. Give it a good looking tank and rear fender like the the Lowrider S and ST with retro styled paint, but retain a chassis similar to an FLH and they'd have one hell of a platform.
Beautiful Motorcycle old school love that sound
Right on! Enjoyed the video. I have an 89 FXRS Low Rider that was built pretty much after it sold by the Harley racing team, but it's about a 35 year old build now! Still running great though!
I've owned an '04 Dyna Low Rider and a 19 Softail Low Rider and my 89 FXR is my favorite. Just love it!
That’s the sound of the 80s!
There was the early HD springer fork copied by europeans, the FXR frame and then came the new softail. That’s what it is. HD is a special company, sometimes likes to roll back far in quality and then suddenly catches up, sometimes though with more just more steel brazed on, sadly, while knowing better.
The FXR is really cool, but for a timed tourist trip across the country I’d take a stock bike, regardless how good the parts&machine shop is.
A very modern build for todays standards, compared to most fxr builders out there right now this is a nice build. Come to Fxr's of California or even the Born free show and you'll see some monster builds
Yea there’s a lot of cool FXRs at born free.
She’s a beaut Clark.
Got that thunder header would look better with out that heat tape but awesome fxr !!!!!!👊💪
Yeah, probably, it’s been wrapped for 15 years now though so I’m sure there’s no going back now. Chrome is likely discolored!
FXR is the best HD. I love my 1987 FXR😍
The Bible to learning about FXR history is Nicks book from FXR BAZAAR…
🤣 😂
@@MattLaidlaw that’s funny ??
F’n gorgeous 😍!
Ha ha. H-D dealerships have gone mad with their quotes period (not just for working on old bikes) . . . to say nothing of their prices for new bikes in the first place. The sticker hike in the last few years has been unbelievable ! They've taken the jolt of 'sticker shock' to a whole new level.
Sweet bike 😊 merry Christmas
1987 Low Rider Custom. the two page spread in the Real Magazines. Mine. 10 Years Later. Still Tearing up the Highway. my rig. Shot was done Mesa. Hilton hotel. I was the guy in the corner of the ad. Corner of Canyon Lake on the way to, from Tortilla Flats. Done over the Thanksgiving weekend. have slides, letter.
I have a Low Glide, built up with FXRP bits….super handling and of course it pulls like crazy with stock engine and L grind cam! Oh and Mikuni carb….
Nice! We had a Mikuni on the original motor as well, great carb!
iam surprised about the low sales me and every body I knew in the 90s had one , we loved the handling ,but they weren't good for two up long distance riding
I’m very glad I got the dyna . In regards to my emotions , physically and my soul .
Did you update the swingarm pivot? Didn’t hear it mentioned. Made a big difference on mine
We did not, maybe something for us to look into when we do the front end as well!
That FXR is 🔥! Great video!
*Great video, thanks so much for the info.* ❤
Great video, would like to see more like it if possible. Thanks.!
I’d like to have more like this as well. It’s kinda one of those videos that gets made when there’s an opportunity.
Nice bike!!
I want one! lol
Check out shadetree s FXR it be cool to see both bikes side by side different. But I believe same goals.
Bike looks great!
HOT!!!
That looks amazing! Currently working my dads FXRS 1984, everything about it is soo cool so im gone stick with more stock parts for sure. I have a emty frame now so thx for some nice inspiration.
Sweet!!
Chosa's Harley Davidson in Tempe. did a couple rides with them.
I just picked up an 86 Liberty Edition in Texas now I got to wait a couple weeks for the shiper to bring it to me I'm dying to get this damn bike here already
🔥
Nice beard
I want one.
Forza 46! :)) Go Vale! 😅
Gotta represent Rossi. Mandatory!
What color is the fxr? Looks great.
love the upgrades on this candy glide... question where did you source out that 3 hole see thru primary cover? I went on the Barnett web page and Google, no luck. would love to get one for my FXR
I think it’s in the drag specialties catalog, if you call in on Tuesday the 2nd and ask for parts they can probably get you the parts number. I’ll try and remember to do the same on Tuesday and leave a note here for you.
Thanks so much Nick
you sure 39mm forks was stock for 1985 mine has 35mm? love the build guys...
You are correct, it was an upgrade done by my uncle so long ago I forgot it was done. But originally it did have the 35mm.
We are about to see the 2024 Pan America 1250.
I would like to see you do a ride review on the 4th production model.
To know if:
A. Are the electronic glitches gone for good.
B.Any physical changes (upgrades) to the bike.
C. Any response from HD for noisy fuel pumps in regard to yhe frequency.
Mine was replaced under warranty at 21,000 miles on my 2022 PAS.
In closing are you still riding your 2021 PA and how many miles on it.
Any issues.
Thank you,
Paul
.
Good video idea. Thank you. We’ll do an in depth review and cover those items. Thanks for the suggestion. I’m about to hit 10k miles on mine.
@MattLaidlaw
Thank you Matt.
Looking forward to it.
I really enjoy my Pan Am and have had minimal issues.
👍👍👍🍺
The start🫵🏻💪🏻❤️✌🏻🏁
Wanna save the company? Bring back a new n improved FXR.
Company is doing fine. Been hearing that for 30 years🇺🇸
@@dawnmathis2659 haha. I wouldn't be surprised
NNNNNNNasty!
matt what happen to M$B guy said in your podcast he's just getting started on UA-cam tell him not to climb Mount Everest badd idea
How a Harley is supposed to sound.
Without a Harley engine.
Dyna over softail all day
No doubt
Not a fan of these 'shorts'...please don't choose HD Corp $s over your fan base guys
Thanks for the comment. What do you mean by short? This is a long form content video 20 minutes long. Also, how is this choosing HD money over my fan base? HD doesn’t sell this bike anymore and therefore doesn’t benefit at all off me promoting a bike that’s 40 years old. Please do explain your comment.
@@MattLaidlaw sorry Matt was comment on another long format video channel that has started throwing up 'shorts' when your vid started....love your content and Happy New Year
It’s a nicely modified bike not a build
John says its a build, its a build. Sorry man.
The FXR was basically torn down to the frame. All new electrical, brakes, wheels, engine, bars, lighting, suspension. It’s a build in my book.
@@MattLaidlawopinions vary
@@talkingrock7011settle dowm Jesse James.
To call this motorcycle a “build” is comical. “Build” has become a very loose term used on the internet for any random collection of bolt-on parts fastened to a stock bike. The guy talking in this video is describing a repair job rather than a “build”.
It’s a build either way. Put your pacifier in
Its funny because John has literally built motorcycles including the frame, and he calls it a build. I haven't asked Tetsuya, but I doubt he would disagree, and you can see the kind of bikes he "builds" on the channel pretty recently. So why are they wrong? Do we need to cast the cylinders and forge the pistons in house before this counts?
Is your definition of a "build" have to include a hand-shaped frame and hand-crafted tins - all painted by the builder? This FXR was basically torn down to the bones. New electrical system, wheels, motor mounts, transmission, suspension, seat, bars, brakes, bags, fairing, and whole new engine. I agree with what you're saying though. "build" has become a loose term thrown around too easily but this bike is a "build" in every sense of the definition.
@@TH3G0ODGUY Whenever a guy has to exaggerate to make his point, he loses all credibility.
@@billsafford586 Its not an exageration. Tetsuya built the frame for his most recent bike. You can check out the video, its on this channel. Its a pretty incredible "build" if you are willing to call it such.
and second!!! ha
FIRST!
The FXR didn't sell well because Harley owners are highly allergic to anything that is even remotely related to performance.
From my perspective, many Harley buyers' place looks, feel, and sound over the need to stretch the performance envelope. Hence, I prefer riding and relaxing on my Road King instead of a myriad of faster, lighter, and cheaper bikes. But I understand those who don't and want more excitement. 😊
@sportyonetaubert5923 Every single time Harley customers told Harley they wanted something performance oriented it was a sales FLOP. It was failure because of 2 reasons. Reason number 1 is Harley doesn't know a goddamn thing about building performance bikes, and Harley riders are only really interested in power parking in front of bars.
From my perspective, i don't believe Harley's traditional buyers were wanting a performance bike. Frankly the foreign bikes build plenty of good ones. Harley's that changed traditional looks and ride were built more to bring in non-traditional Harley buyers. So I don't blame traditional Harley buyers. Harley didn't build a bike to sell well enough to people who wouldn't ordinarily buy from Harley.
