- Nick the History Kid goes to Paterson, New Jersey to visit the places that were important to Lou Costello that still exist. Nick will show you his house, school, places he played such as the great falls, Garrett Mountain, the Paterson Armory, the Fabian Theater and more. Nick will finally answer the question "What did Lou invent?" and finally for all you die hard Lou Costello fans. You are challenged to find the Lou mannerism hidden in the 18 1/2 minutes video. Clue: this Lou trait was not see in any movie. Enjoy

I was born and raised in Paterson NJ. in 1952, I used to see wrestling matches at the Armory. If he were to walk the streets now he'd break down and cry.
I grew up there also. I was thinking the same thing :(

I attended St. Anthony's School in Beech Street from nursery to 8th grade (Ervin Nieves, class of 1977), attended Don Bosco Technical High School (1977-1981) and I used to box in Lou Costello's boxing gym where Rocky Lockridge, Diego Rosario, Bobby Cyz, Curtis Harris, and others were training at the time. I met two old ladies who grew up with Costello -- his actually real name was "Lou Cristello", "Costello" was his stage surname -- in Paterson. They rented an apartment at 58 17th Avenue in Paterson, where my parents were the superintendents and I was raised from age 5 to 22. The ladies dressed in an impeccable 1940s style (like Louis Lane in Superman) and told me stories of Lou Cristello. Fun memories.
I Attended Public School number 3 on main st across from the Bingo hall.
Lou Costello and his family were also faithful parishioners at St. Anthony's on Beech Street, Paterson. Indeed, he called together his Hollywood friends to hold a benefit to raise money for the building of the Salesian church and school. Fond memories of him and his family lived in my parents' and grandparents' memories.

I remember when a speech teacher portrayed by sidney fields in the movie mexican hayride asked lou costello what are the consonants. And lou replied "there is north america, South America, and Patterson New Jersey".

Nice job providing a bit of history and preserving the memory of a great comedian. It's nice to see how important things are not just going to be lost in time, but also there's a melancholy too for better times gone by and life in Paterson clearly used to be more fun in those days. It's like my home town in the UK, everywhere I used to go is boarded up and there seems to be nothing to do except be a couch potato or escape to the nearest city. A lot of the UK is the same, just nothing at all going on anymore, no sense of community. That's what I admire about Americans, you have a sense of pride in your home town wherever that might be and a sense of belonging, but we tend to be the total opposite.
Nick, you did a damn good job! I've always wanted to see the hometown of Lou Costello!! and to know his childhood home still stands and to see the play house his father built for his sister is nothing short of awesome, thank you.

Great job, 5 enjoyed it very much. I actually lived on E30th st. Not until years later I would find out that Lou's childhood home was only 2 blocks away. My mom told me she would always go see them at the Armory. Also as a kid I would ride my bicycle down 10th Avenue which turns into McClean Blvd 20. He had a beautiful home just before Kent Village. Again great job, and thanks for the memories.

I was born in Paterson in 1946. I can remember living on Getty Ave. until I was 5 years old. Then we moved to a small town in northern Passaic County named Midvale-Wanaque. I was raised in this small town. When I was young, I watched the Abbott and Costello Show on TV. Lou Costello always mentioned Paterson, NJ as his home town.
I had tears in my Eyes from seeing him in Paterson and his Mom!
I remember the day he died. I was 2 1/2 years old. My grandmother was holding me in her arms at our apartment kitchen in Jersey City while my mother picked up the Jersey Journal and said, "oh my God, Lou Costello died today." I will never forget that day. As a kid, I used to asked my mother..... " did Lou Costello die of an artichoke?". I couldn't pronounce heart attack correctly. The best growing up and watching their movies and mimicking Lou as a kid. Still watch and own their movies and TV Show DVD'S. I salute you Lou. P. Visone.

Thank you for that fine video. It is sad to see those famous Lou Costello landmarks in such bad shape. I live about 15 minutes drive from Paterson. It is sad to see the condition Paterson has become. I was told it was very beautiful once by people who grew up in Paterson. Too bad Lou passed away so young. Rest in Peace Lou.

Good job.... DElbarton School... The Green Wave. I got to meet him through my grandfather who was County Treasurer and Freeholder Paterson and lived in Hawthorne. I went to Delbarton 65 66 ----- I remember when all those buidings and stadiums were thriving. Fabian Theater was a jewel of Paterson...many movie theatres there....
...I've got pictures of Paterson looking from almost the exact same spot (Garret Mountain in your intro) that I took ca. 1967 or '68 with my then new to me 35mm rangefinder camera...long before I 80 existed...

Paterson-once a thriving town, now a crime ridden slum--how sad!
It's still home to many people who love Paterson 's past history as well as the city of today. Many who still have fond memories of Paterson as children have forgotten that even today we still love the all the places we once called "Home." True Patersonians will love our old city always, sometimes it's those of us whose heart have turn into a slum, and that no longer cherish her as a treasure only to abandon her time and time again. Paterson will always own a place in my heart.

Nick you do know that a large part of the cannon balls used in the American Revolution were made around Pompton Lakes NJ? And that more battles of the Revolution were fought in NJ than any place else? The list goes on. Thanks so much for your work on these videos. You do very nice work!
