I have watched quite a few videos on the Z9 now, and being a pro using Nikon for some 40 years, I am very excited about this camera. But is it just a sports camera? That's all I've seen anyone talk about when reviewing it. I am a pro in a regional area who has to take jobs of all types, and some are action, but on any day, I might need to shoot real estate , portraiture (available light and studio) , product etc. etc. I'm convinced the fosussing is fantastic, but what about this camera for architecture? Studio portraiture? Interiors? What about it's colour science? Dynamic Range? It is a 45MP camera so it isn't out of the question for those subjects but with every reviewer only referring to it as a sports camera I'm wondering if it is only that which kindof makes me see it as a pro camera but only in one area. I'm hoping I am wrong but with everybody testing it for sports it has me wondering...
Although the Z9 is certainly built for speed to easily capture sports or any other type of fast moving subjects, it can also handle studio portraiture, interiors or architecture just as well.
I need to know what high iso images look like (better than Z6?) and then what custom functions can i set all of those Fn buttons to do (same suite as other Z models or limited/useless options in D6?)
The Z-9 offers spectacular high ISO images. The Fn2 button offers plenty of custom control assignments. Please e-mail us for details: askbh@bandh.com >Mark
Is it me or are all these pictures littered with graining, which gets worth in out of focus areas? At 5:40 if you look at the arm holding the racket it generates an afterglow, and it even seems if the arm got burned into the sensor (just like burn-in on say a bad OLED TV panel). I am watching this on a LG B8 OLED TV so I know. Yeah, not impressed at all! 🥴 So far I'll stick with my 'ancient' D90.
This promo and Nikon's 4 teasers left me wondering where is the bird eye autofocus examples? You would think that along with Sports they would be aiming at nature photographers as well. I just find the lack of current examples a bit concerning (until I see them).
Thank you so much for your feedback. While sports is one of the mainly things that this camera is capable of capturing with ease, it can most certainly work for nature photographers just as well. The Nikon Z9 Mirrorless Digital Camera has a maximum flash X-sync speed of 1/200 sec. to 1/250 sec. It synchronizes with the camera's shutter at 1/200 sec. or slower; Auto FP High-Speed sync is supported with flashes that support i-TTL automatic flash exposure and HSS.
Will the Z9 flash sync at any shutter speed like a leaf shutter camera? One would think so as the entire image is scanned at once unlike a mechanical shutter.
Does the electronic shutter mean that high speen flash sync will be at full power? * Does it have automatic focus stacking ala D850? * How does the exposure operate in AP mode?
No. You would need a Global Shutter for full power flash at all shutter speeds. This sensor reads out at 1/270 of a second. However if you have an old Nikon D70, you can block the sync contact and it will allow full power flash at up to 1/8000 of a second with its old CCD sensor. Just use a piece of tape.
@@romiemiller7876 D800 is still a very nice camera. The only truly practical things it is missing are in body image stabilization, and phase detect autofocus in live view/video. Yeah, would be nice if these modern CMOS sensors would finally have Global Shutters like CCD sensors. Maybe we will see the first Global Shutter CMOS sensor in Micro Four Thirds next year, but I doubt it. Would be easier to achieve with that smaller sensor though.
Yes there is focus stacking capability. The exposures are wonderful in all Auto modes. High speed flash sync will not be at full power: Flash Modes: First-Curtain Sync, Off, Rear Sync, Red-Eye Reduction, Slow Sync, Slow Sync/Red-Eye Reduction Maximum Sync Speed: 1/200 Second Flash Compensation: -3 to +1 EV (1/3, 1/2 EV Steps) Dedicated Flash System: iTTL External Flash Connection: Hot Shoe, PC Terminal >Mark

Ricci Talks released a video testing that! It depends on the cards... if you use a XQD you get something like 30, low budget CF 40, mid range CF 60 or something... Good CF 80 Full RESS RAW without compression
According to Nikon, the buffer can handle more than 1000 frames at 20 FPs in High Efficiency RAW when using a card such as the ProGrade Digital CFexpress™ Type B 2.0 Cobalt 1700R, bhpho.to/3CKZltG However, they do not publish the buffer size at full size RAW.

Unfortunately, to my knowledge, the Nikon Z9 Mirrorless Digital Camera does not have a specific focus mode designed to focus on balls or rackets. However, as the camera does now have 3D Tracking (the first for a Nikon mirrorless digital camera), you may try using this by using the C-AF (Continuous Autofocus) drive mode and placing the AF point over your desired subject.

How is the connectivity for the Z-series as a camera for live streaming etc? I recently tried to use my D7200 for this and I got a shock out how bad it is. Even while using third party software which is decades ahead of Nikon's Webcam Utility a five year old, no name "action camera" i bought for about 30€ outperforms the Nikon. I'm seriously disappointed by this.
I have one of those D7200 it's about 8-9 years old. We both need to upgrade. Even when they were new back in the day they were unreliable for video because they always hunted while focusing. Until you can upgrade you're better off using a mobile phone to stream.
until my ultra reliable pair of D 7000 series DSLR's give up the ghost , I won't look at Mirrorless cameras , but once they're gone , I'll give this video a second view - saved to favourites ( just in case )
They test the camera on fully white background/full black subject and advertise its focus tracking...you buy it..take it to a venue low light, very low contrast and you'll be shocked how weak it is

SO, at this point are we going to start just shooting 8k video and pulling frames for photos. Discarding photography?
Absolutely meets MORE then expectations. I got a hands on test with the Z9 with the new 2.0 firmware and its like opened up possibilities that were not at possible before this camera to capture. Will be taking it out soon to the Maasai Mara for Wildlife photography and that too am anticipating will be another leap forward in possibilities.
MY favorit rewie video sho far!! And how did you clean the camera??
Nikon REALLY DO need someone to test the Zee 9 in Middle Eastern conditions for a time period of no less than 12 months , and I promise to return the camera , when I'm good and ready !!!
OK....This is the FIRST video I have seen at high ISO. Can't tell on video. How is the crop ability ? Noisy ? A bit of Luminance noise at 1:33
This is one incredible camera! You will need to try it out for yourself to truly appreciate it. A UA-cam video cannot come close to doing it justice. >Mark
Why would Nikon drop the 45.7mb sensor for a 20.4 mb global sensor?
love the sneakers on Jen 15:30 I got same pair as well as blue color version
Also in the future we will see the watered down Nikon cameras with most of these features..
Such high Iso values doesnt that give you any problems? Im very curious got my z9 and 70-200 last thursday but this looks insane..
Mine on pre order for sure.
I not saying you are right or wrong - But normally can't take YT video as gospel - but checked above- they do no offer a download to view real source
This promo and Nikon's 4 teasers left me wondering where is the bird eye autofocus examples? You would think that along with Sports they would be aiming at nature photographers as well. I just find the lack of current examples a bit concerning (until I see them).
Check out Morten Hilmers most recent video today, animal eye af looking great
Thank you so much for your feedback. While sports is one of the mainly things that this camera is capable of capturing with ease, it can most certainly work for nature photographers just as well. It's a possibility that we may introduce more content in the future pertaining to the Z9 and its use for nature photography.
@@AlanHoey86 Thank you. Already found it (and other examples). Still doesn't explain why Nikon didn't include that in the promos. Just curious. Next concern: I have big f mount glass. When is the launch date of the FTZII adapter?
@@dance2jam You can get the FTZII as a bundle with the Z9. I believe you can also order it individually already
@@romanpul You are correct about being able to order it, but even my local camera store has no idea on a release date. Let's keep our fingers crossed it's end of December for both (rumor from local store).
Will we count the amount of times jack tapped the body?
Is the shutter sound fully simulated, since there is no physical shutter?
Yes.
Due to the electronic shutter in this case, the shutter sound is simulated.
What is the sound on 6:43 ? ))))
A motorcycle revving.
call sony and canon they are crying, the best thing about this camera is the metrics and processor allow for future incredible firmware updates like 40 fps RAW :) this body is the next 2 years easy.
They're hardly crying. They're developing better. Then Nikon will develop better. And around we go. Competition ultimately benefits the consumer the most. I hope this camera motivates the other brands. As for me, I am heavily invested in the Nikon ecosystem, and I have no inclination to change. I'm happy with what I've got.
@@johnw.3636 those two systems had a majority of the market this is a fact not an opinion, they are about to lose allot of money to the best camera system on earth, trust me they are crying.
@@ison5622 I don't care. That's my point. I'm not here to argue with you on the merits or marketshare of brands. My point is competition ultimately benefits the people buying the gear because it brings better and better specs to the market. Really don't see how that was missed, unless you just read the first line and responded on emotion.
@@ison5622 They are not crying because only idiots would change systems these days when some new camera comes out. They all are pretty equal and if one has slight advantage within 6-12 months other brand will catch up!
@@milkod2001 Exactly and that's the beauty of an open market and competition.
Everything is looking really good and the one thing I like the most is the Expeed 7 chip. That's going to allow for more future upgradability. This camera is going to have a long life.
Can U test the performance of flash sync? Is that only limited at 1/200? Is that possible to be faster?
The Nikon Z9 Mirrorless Digital Camera has a maximum flash X-sync speed of 1/200 sec. to 1/250 sec. It synchronizes with the camera's shutter at 1/200 sec. or slower; Auto FP High-Speed sync is supported with flashes that support i-TTL automatic flash exposure and HSS.
@@BandH Thanks a lot.Look forward to another test about flash sync.
Will the Z9 flash sync at any shutter speed like a leaf shutter camera? One would think so as the entire image is scanned at once unlike a mechanical shutter.
The Z9 does offer the Auto FP High Speed Sync function when using Nikon CLS System Speedlights.
anyone know how good the sensor lock works?
I'm just here to watch Joe McNally.
@@DragonfireRC Hi. Thanks. I have a D800 now.
High speed flash sync will not be at full power:
Flash Modes: First-Curtain Sync, Off, Rear Sync, Red-Eye Reduction, Slow Sync, Slow Sync/Red-Eye Reduction
Maximum Sync Speed: 1/200 Second
Flash Compensation: -3 to +1 EV (1/3, 1/2 EV Steps)
Dedicated Flash System: iTTL
External Flash Connection: Hot Shoe, PC Terminal >Mark
One more thing, what about the experience with the EVF? Since it's not the 5M or even 9M model and without 120 fps, will all this missing will have some bad effect ? Or just like what NIKON said, yhis EVF is marvelous ? Thanks.
We feel the EVF is quite marvelous. >Mark
My question is how did you clean the camera afterwards “safely?”
humid cloth... be gentle... really soft brush... repeat until it get really good looking
I just watched the video on the firmware upgrade for the Z9. The only thing I have a problem with is I can't afford one! I'm working on that, but it's going to b awhile.
I noticed the iso WAS AT 12800/20000 on some of the first skating shots. What is the quality at that high ISO?
Incredibly good Pam! >Mark
What Nikon camera will replace the D850 for sheer MP resolution (No speed concern, studio)?
Nikon Z8 now that they have hit it out of the park with this one.
@@tallaganda83 Cool, thanks!
@@truthaboutislam2024 No Z8 has been confirmed or even mentioned by any serious outlets. It is just something most people on the internet think Nikon will produce. I'd guess that we will see one, but I don't think it's a guarantee, especially since some feel the Z7/Z7II was the mirrorless equivalent to the D850 already. We'll just have to wait and see.
Unfortunately, Nikon hasn't shared any plans for a D850 replacement just yet. If they do, we'll definitely make it now through this platform and others.
@@BandH Thanks!
Aaahhhh Walden ❤️❤️❤️ miss riding there.
is it allow us to reduce the sensor resolution? Like when shooting sports, i just want to work with 21 to 24 megapixels files
The Nikon Z9 offers control over and selection of image quality, image size in pixels within several different formats [for example: FX (36×24; FX FORMAT)
Medium: 6192 × 4128] and NEF (RAW) recording compression and bit depth. >Mark
A very deep clear test. Could you share the buffer of shooting full size RAW? Because I saw others testing is quite frustrating, only 40!? Thanks a lot.
Ricci Talks released a video testing that! It depends on the cards... if you use a XQD you get something like 30, low budget CF 40, mid range CF 60 or something... Good CF 80 Full RESS RAW without compression
@@davidsouzmr Then it's not good wnough to beat R5 or even A1? A1 is over 200 on full size RAW ?
According to Nikon, the buffer can handle more than 1000 frames at 20 FPs in High Efficiency RAW when using a card such as the ProGrade Digital CFexpress™ Type B 2.0 Cobalt 1700R, bhpho.to/3CKZltG
However, they do not publish the buffer size at full size RAW.
@@JC-Joyful7 i dont think A1 does over 200 on full size raw... they only shoot 30FPS in 12bit raw. Nikon does 20 FPS, 80 shots on the buffer full res 14bit without compression. A1 i dont think it can shoot more than 80 frames on files without compression in 14bit
@@davidsouzmr Thanks a lot. This solve all my doubts. A very details test can proof the situation of Z9. U did a great job.
How would the camera keep the tennis ball hitting racket in focus? Not a person, pet, auto? Is there a way?
The Z9 uses deep learning technology in its autofocus system to lock into moving subjects more easily.
Why do you use so a high iso from 10.000 and a lot more at daylight?
This practice is not unusual to capture fast moving subjects. >Mark
Good job Nikon. I was worried about Nikon for a while, but they stepped it up.
I'm waiting for the Nikon NIKKOR Z 600mm f/4 TC VR S Lens to be restocked at B&H. Bring it on!
What a great camera.... wow. And all on body controls are backlit.
I really want this camera.
How about using the LCD screen when shooting. It's not reliable or you just want to convey to dslr users that they don't have to change their shooting style. It's a joy to see Joe McNally at work. Great video!
There is certainly nothing wrong with using the LCD, especially when the shot is too challenging to obtain using the EVF. Thanks for checking out the video!
What I hate about Canon is that Canon forces us to use two different card type. This is incredibly stupid. For that alone I am already in love with Z9. Nikon understands photographers on a much diaper level.
They definitely did that on purpose to keep people from choosing the R3 over the R1, once it gets released
Man if my Z7II and glass got that muddy I'd be horrified but hope to have gotten the shots. Careful cleaning afterwards just like I used to have to do after a day at the shooting range lol
Ordered thru B&H!
Did someone make camera straps illegal?
Joe! Was it hard to shoot without lighting it? I love my Canon R5 but this is SUCH a camera! In you Nikon has the best voice for its gear. And you getting amp'd up in the mud cracked me up!
Is there a crop in 4k 120?
No 😀
4K 30p recording is possible using an oversampled 8K area for improved sharpness and full frame 4K up to 120p can also be used for slow-motion playback. Additionally, the Z 9 supports 10-bit internal recording as ProRes 422 HQ or H.265 files. >Mark

Definitely getting my hands on one of this bomb!📸💯🎯
The thumbnail shows what I have always wanted to do with a camera.
When are they sending one to Sean O'Connell to review?
I haven't decided between using my saved $5,000 to buy a used Ford Tempo for my mother in law or the new Nikon Z9 for me !
that's an easy one :)
You’re right, the Mother in law has to go.
Z series is masively better at being used for live streaming, battery is much better and you can keep charge on it hooking it with usb c.
The Nikon Z-Series in general for live streaming is excellent from our findings.
Thanks @@kornofilo and @B&H Photo Video
I have one of those D7200 it's about 8-9 years old. We both need to upgrade. Even when they were new back in the day they were unreliable for video because they always hunted while focusing. Until you can upgrade you're better off using a mobile phone to stream.
ohhh my god. How does he clean the camera after all the mud.
Very nice video...playing in the mud 😄...I ordered one..not two 🤪 like Jen
Hopefully the AF actually works, it certainly doesn't in the POS called the D850
Interesting, it looks to be a great camera. The mud thing was a bit silly though.
Silly?
I think they purposely did it to show the durability for Nikon products.
@@EduardoMurillo Yes maybe, but I doubt many pro photographers would get themselves in that situation with expensive equipment.
until my ultra reliable pair of D 7000 series DSLR's give up the ghost , I won't look at Mirrorless cameras , but once they're gone , I'll give this video a second view - saved to favourites ( just in case )
I am glad to see Nikon rebounding with such a high quality pro mirrorless body.
How many photos out of the burst where in focus. Obviously this video is to push a product but a real honest review is better
Well of course just a few. That’s the nature of photography and a moving object.
you should watch Matt Granger video. he literally compared D5 vs Z9 autofocus.
Capa's actual quote: "If your pictures aren't good enough, you're not close enough."
what is the music? please!
They test the camera on fully white background/full black subject and advertise its focus tracking...you buy it..take it to a venue low light, very low contrast and you'll be shocked how weak it is
OMG - How did it clean up with all that mud. Amazing camera!!
Good question cause from what I've heard due to the flip screen it's not weather sealed like the old Dslr Nikons and this will be a real issue with moisture.
