they way i solved the problem is i assumed configuration that followed the even rule could be formed by flipping the color of a 2x2 square on the board. this is the simplest way to transform one valid config to another. the order doesn’t matter in flipping the square so there are 2^49 configurations because there are 49 possible squares to flip.

Wow, this problem was a wild ride. Breaking it down step by step really shows how approachable even the toughest quant questions can be. Adding SolutionInn into the mix for extra practice makes tackling interview problems like this more manageable.

    ***spoiler for the 2nd problem***
we can just build the system of equations:
    P(even starting from even) = [1/6 * 1] + [2/6 * P(even starting from even)] + [3/6 * P(even starting from odd)]
    P(even starting from odd) = [1/6 * 0] + [2/6 * P(even starting from odd)] + [3/6 * P(even starting from even)]
solving for P(even starting from even) gives us 4/7, that is the right solution (verified with montecarlo simulations)

hey quant professor, for entry level quant research role, not quant trader, do they ask harder questions that require higher level math tools to solve?

The way i solved it was slightly different - Once you fill 7 rows, the 8 row and all columns are kind of fixed. And even fill for each row is 2**7 hence 2**(7*7).
