In this episode of Jazz Lab, host Noah Kellman sits down with modern jazz piano master Aaron Parks, a forward-thinking musician who first came to the public's attention during his time with trumpeter Terence Blanchard and has since released numerous albums under his own name contributing monumentally to the jazz idiom. In this episode, Aaron & Noah discuss two-handed solo piano techniques, modern improvisation concepts, advanced rhythm exercises, and more. You can also hear performances by Aaron solo, as well as the two playing duo.

In this Jazz Piano Lesson, I'm sharing an awesome lick over a C dominant chord. Do you know the name of the scale I'm using here? This scale is a killer tool to pull out over any dominant sound, so I recommend learning it in as many keys as you can!

I remember having a similar thought about "over-responding" to a soloist. If jazz is like a conversation, then being too hyper-responsive is probably the equivalent of a person that emits a constant stream of, "uh-huh, yeah, oh really, hmm, right, of course..." while you're talking, and after awhile it's, "just STFU and let me get my sentence out."

It’s cool seeing Parks talk about Rosenwinkel because the two of them are a couple of my favorite contemporary jazz artists and in listening to them for awhile I never assumed that they would end up collaborating.

Lots of pianists go ham and will take over a song with no regard for the soloist. It’s very obnoxious.
