  • Marina Rebeka in Anna Bolena's Mad Scene. Clearly not an outstanding performance, especially "al dolce guidami", which shows this singer's limitations and multiple issues (lack of trills, lack of low register, pitch problems, weak middle, lacks legato, she often uses the sound H in attempt to sing with legato and in fioritura). NOT a voice for belcanto.

How dare you take someone else's recording and post it online just to criticize!!! I think that's very impolite. You don't do that, whatever your opinion.

At this point it is better to disband the orchestra and all the performers from the stage. Instead just put on a recording of Sutherland, Gruberova, Fleming, Caballe, (take your pick) and play it on a big screen in the theater.
It is cheaper, and at least you get quality singing and orchestra playing for your expensive ticket. There is really no need to pay for this backwater circus, so that we end up listening to whatever Rebeka and company are doing. There is really no worth to a performance like this.
Better to spend money on blackjack and nice ladies.

Are youtube descriptions the appropriate place for opera criticism? Seems odd.
It's almost as odd as using one performance of one role on one night as evidence that someone's voice isn't a good fit for a whole repertory.
Just remember that when one criticizes others, then one's taste is also subject to criticism. And as far as my perspective goes here, there is someone here who is out of their element, and it isn't Marina Rebeka.

Very poor execution, but not the worst ever as many have stated. There's always Peretyatkos, Damraus, Oropesas or Yendes who can sing worse. BUT wait, that's pretty much what opera has become....strict in terms of the vocal performance, there's two main conversations: who sings worse or who is better from a series of mediocre singers. I go to the opera only for the music and productions, because most singers are 3rd rate nowadays. Rebeka is just about average, usually.

I agree with Belcanto 1943, that there are very few great voices today, having had the great fortune to hear Birgit Nilsson, Joan Sutherland live many times, ones yardstick stretch into the stratosphere, I think young singers with fresh voices are often tempted to take on to much to soon. Nilsson said it took her 10 years to find the voice and 10 years to tame it, both were in their mid 30ties before they felt ready to take on the big parts in the international arena. and they lasted into their 60ties. Nilsson's Isolde , Turandot, Salome and Electra all live. All back in the 60ties early 70ties is my most deeply felt Opera experiences. and Sutherland's Traviata, and Lucia de Lammermoor live at the Covent Garden during the same era, I feel truly blessed to have gained access to top seating through friends in the industry. I hear many new promising young voices in young singers competitions, and think......take your time, There are a few new young Tenors with huge potential just now, Roberto Alanga , Arturo Chancon-Cruz, Javier Camarena, give them a try.

The aria "al dolce guidami" is a big mess, in fact. She did the same mistakes as in Paris; so it looks like a pattern. Some moments are really embarrassing...08:16-08:17 affanni wtf?...09:18; the cadenza from 10:20; all hit and miss, off pitch. The cabaletta is mediocre...she lacks the fioritura and the range for it, not to mention the annoying Hs in some difficult parts. The ending is awkward: she probably rehearsed with Eb, but here she decided not to sing it and it sounds like a last moment decision lol. But the Eb is NOT a problem, it actually sounds better without it in her case (she usually shouts the sovracuti). Rebeka doesn't have either the vocal abilities, or the taste for belcanto repertoire. She isn't refined or sophisticated enough to handle these prima donna roles. Although she's not the worst soprano in belcanto at the moment, she'd be so much better in other roles like Suzel, Cio Cio san, Mimi etc. roles she probably sings already.

I never understand why singers unable to trill insist on singing music that is riddled with trills. She has a lovely voice, but to sing this role, you need a complete mastery of all the fine points of bel canto, including fluency in fioriture, solid trills in every register, a perfect understanding of legato, rubato and portamento, all of which she lacks.

Although I think Marina has sung this performance worse than other times, I agree with you. Maybe she didn't feel good. She likes to finish the aria with high Eb flat.
I have heard her live and the voice is bigger than usual (in these days) but the chest is not developed and the middle is weak. Stronger than what we hear from other singers? yes, but she is overrated in my opinion
