Alchemy is a mystical form of chemistry so the same genetic traits that make you a good chemist will make you a good alchemist. But alchemy itself is not inherently gentic any more than chemistry.

To answer the question, Alchemy can be learned by anyone. Alchemy is essentialy academic, thus just lkje in real life anyone can learn anything, but of course people can be born with genius level intelect and pick it up much easier and faster than others. The Elrich Brothers are on the cusp of that. They're seen as prodigies, but really they studied and trained extremely hard to get where they are. I can't wait for you guys to meet their teacher.

Since Scar is Ishvalan, he uses a loophole in transmutation to weaponise it. Transmutation is comprised of three stages; information (analysing the material), deconstruction (breaking down the substance to its fundamental components) and reconstruction (rebuilding the substance into the desired form).Scar stops at stage two, this separates him from alchemists while allowing him to follow his religious doctrine (Ishvalan doctrine states that only God can reshape the world, hence alchemists are heretics).

I absolutely adore the relationship between Edward and Alphonse. Their brotherhood is a huge part of the show (hence the title) but it also feels so natural. They always try to protect each other, but this episode in particular shows it perfectly by having Al yell at Ed for not running when he told him to which leads to them having a heartbreaking conversation and then the two of them joking around, showing how strong of a bond they have.

The show expertly portrays that the world isn't quite black and white by having people on the side of our protagonists, who we are supposed to see as the good guys, be the people that committed atrocities against innocent people of Ishval. The actions of the 'villain' that is the Ishvalan man that is currently killing State Alchemists are also very much understandable because of it.

Alchemy is basically like supernatural chemistry. When they say scar stops at deconstruction, he doesn't turn it into a different element. he simply turns it into smaller pieces. Basically if he touches steel it will just revert back to scraps of iron and carbon or if he touches water he can turn in into hydrogen and oxygen. But much like 8th grade chemistry labs you need to know what you are deconstructing. In other words he doesn't accurately guess what he is touching he can't transmute it. Its the reason it didn't work on eds arm the first time but did work the second time. Scar mistakenly believed Ed's arm was flesh and blood and since it wasn't scars Alchemy did not work That's why it worked a second time because he knew that his arm was made of iron. but you'll also notice the things like wires and other larger pieces remained in tact. This is because those were made of trace elements he didn't know about. likely nickel, or tungsten.

"IS ONE'S ABILITY TO DO ALCHEMY AFFECTED BY GENETICS?"
ANSWER: No. It's pure science. What you put into it is equal to what comes out of it. You yourself is not a factor. You have to know what you're doing and put in the proper procedure to do it, but who does it is irrelevant. What IS relevant is whether you have the scientific knowledge and understanding to make it happen.
So long answer short: Alchemy as a power is not affected by genetics. But as it is a science, ones genetic pre-disposition towards that kind of subject and ones ability to grasp and works with it DOES.
But if you have the knowhow, thats all it takes. Also being able to draw well I guess. But if you can do the necessary process anybody could produce the same results. Being the son of an alchemist doesn't make you an alchemist more than being the son of a scholar makes you a scholar. All the same, the son of a scholar IS more likely to end up a scholar than the son a say a postal delivery man. The enviorement they're raised in, what they're taught, materials available to them that isnt to others.
    That's the gist.
It is NOT like bending in Avatar, certain people aren't born blessed with alchemy as with bending and no one is a "particular" type of bender as in Avatar. Any person could in theory use any kind of alchemy if they just know how to do it unlike in Avatar. Which is what I feel you're comparing it to or where the question arises from or the mindset that it would be that way^^
    Have a nice day!

Scar stops at deconstruction because as hes said he only believes god should create. YOU can go and rip apart a bunch of flowers, what you shouldnt be allowed to do is basically put it back together like nothing happened. Or turn the pieces into something new completely. Edward destroys too, but he can reconstruct it into what he wants. And destroying doesnt mean it just evaporates. You’re breaking apart the atoms that hold for example a rock together. The rocks not gone, its just in smaller pieces. You can literally make it into dust particles, and still put it back together keeping the mass the same.

Okay. I need to remind you of something and pay attention.
Firstly. Remember the flashback where Ed, after he got a new arm, wanted to test how it works. He clasped his hands together and transfigured a piece of the casing into a blade. And Al then reacted, "Wow, you did it without a transmutation circle. Just like our teacher."
And Ed replied, "But you should be able to do that too." But Al denied it, and Ed replied more to himself than to him, "So you didn't see ..." and the scene showed the gate of Truth.
And here you are clearly told what's going on. Scar says "you join hands to form a circle".

For me, it seems to be that everyone is able to do alchemy. However, in order to be able to do advanced things (and especially use it in combat), you need an extreme amount of intelligence. And even then, most people choose to specialize in a field, like Mustang on fire, because in order to get the maximum out of it, you really have to understand every possible physical and chemical components and reactions you trigger with your ability. Edward and Al clearly are geniuses, and that is possibly a partial genetic heritage.

It's why most of the alchemists we see in the show only specialize in a very specific type of alchemy, like Dr. Marco with medical alchemy, Basque Grand with iron alchemy, Mustang with his fire alchemy, etc. This is why knowing the truth is so powerful for alchemists because it lets them basically use alchemy freely without having to make a symbol for every different transmutation, for example: Edward, this makes them way way more versatile and adaptable than any other alchemists, but it comes at some costs ofc, such as slowing down transmutation slightly since you need to clasp your hands together but it's more than worth it.

Actually, here's an image metaphor to make it easier to imagine:
Alchemy is like a rifle. No matter who is using it, the entire mechanism of shooting is in the rifle itself. If you pull the trigger, it will shoot. However, the user can make a difference if they for example know how to aim, how the shot will happen, recoil, know how to reload, effective blast radius etc. Depending on the user you can use the rifle much more effectively or in different ways, but all those abilites were already present with the rifle in the first place. If you just know those things can be done, and just know how to do it, then the rifle will always produce the same results if the user does the same things. It's a question of knowledge like so.

So you do not need 2 hands to perform alchemy. You can have equipment with a prepared circle marked on it for prepared attacks used in specific ways. Armstrong’s gauntlets, Mustang’s gloves, and others all have this equipment. Namely state alchemists. You can also draw a circle on the surface you want to effect (Al does this) and Ed needs no prepared circle at all. His clapping in a circle shape is how it works, but he can only do it after passing through the portal. If someone else were to try, it would not work. And HIS method requires two hands but it’s so fast it really doesn’t matter.
But there is one other thing. You need to know exactly the chemical/elemental make up of what you are effecting. That’s why Scar couldn’t break Ed’s arm 1st go. He thought his arm was carbon like our arms. Not steel. As for the deconstruction, you can see the other alchemist’s displace the earth to reshape the objects they want to make. Like when Ed makes a spear, he leaves a small crater where he made it from. The matter Scar touches is still there, it doesn’t disappear, it just doesn’t stay in one piece. So when he explodes you, he’s likely completely disfiguring your insides to do it. Which is why he leaves such a mess.
Is alchemy professionalism genetic? No. It’s knowledge dependent. It’s how much do you know your chemistry, biology, physics, and more to get it to work right. That’s why State Alchemists are instantly promoted to Majors. They don’t need to prove they are geniuses overtime. Because vast knowledge of alchemy takes such a big brain to do it, only a display or two can show how ludicrously smart you are. And you only need to prove your prowess once a year. Tucker had declined because his wife chimera couldn’t be repeated without a person. So he could never repeat the intelligence.
Al can’t breathe, eat, sleep, and has no sensation of touch at all. He ONLY has vision and hearing with the will to move the armor. And he only knows his armor has made a step by hearing the clank of his armor. He’s had 3+ years of practice so that’s why he runs like a normal person. He could conceivably run endlessly faster, but his brain wherever it is would need to process the sound fast enough.

In a lesser show, Scar would be just some one-dimensional serial killer targeting the military. But FMA:B goes to great lengths to demonstrate that it's not so much about good or evil as it is the fallout and trauma of past events. If your entire people was targeted for extermination, _of course_ you'd seek vengeance, no matter how self-destructive it may be. And while our protagonists in the military may seem nice enough, they didn't become the dominant power by being nice. Thanks to how they use Alchemy, they have killing down to a science. An alternate show could've easily been done via Scar's perspective; it'd have been about a lone wandering survivor going on a crusade against a superpowered military. FMA:B has a lot of great character arcs, but Scar has one of the best. And as for all that talk of sacrifices... No one better spoil a damn thing. You'll see eventually.

if you guys didnt notice, each type of alchemy has a different transmutation circle based on the material that they are transmuting, so you can notice how armstrong only transmutes concrete/cement type materials, mustang transmutes the oxygen in the air in addition to his gloves that can produce sparks to ignite, and isaac mcdougal only transmutes water. Ed doesnt use any circles, but if he still doesnt know the theory, he cant transmute it. The circleless transmutation obviously being a return that truth gave him for his human transmutation (giving up his leg). The portal was opened, the one that contains all the knowledge about alchemy, so every circle is contained within ed's portal, he just has to know how each material can be manipulated (comprehension) so that he can deconstruct and reconstruct, so if he studied roy's alchemic theory, he would be able to know how to transmute fire.

Being good at alchemy is just like being good at physics (if being good at physics means you can do actual miracles) and the transmutation circle is the alchemical equivalent of the equation, so every transmutation has it's own unique circle, and state alchemists have these circles on their gauntlets ( Roy on his gloves, Armstrong on his gauntlet and so on) that's why people are surprised when Ed uses alchemy without circles, also that means that if he knows the theory he can do any transmutation
although every state alchemist spent years refining his knowledge, Armstrong refining earth into metal and using it, Mustang creating a path of oxygen molecules and using his snap as friction lighting this path up
btw that was all explained in the 2003 adaptation and is assumed to be common knowledge here so it's glossed over
as for the whole Ed sacrificing his life it's not just that Al is just dependent on Ed but it's that Ed is an alchemical prodigy who Al thinks has the ability to help many other with his alchemy and that given enough time could help people like him and Nina return to their original bodies so in his eyes Ed's life is more valuable than his

The heretic's alchemy scar is referring to is that instead of using circles, Ed can clap two hands together instead and not use a circle. This is because he's committed the taboo of human transmutation.
Everyone else you see do alchemy like Armstrong and Mustang typical only do certain types of alchemy like lightning/fire because they're using pre-drawn circles (they can do other alchemy as well, but not in a fight because they'd have to stop to draw a circle).

They explained in episode 2 that Ed is able to do alchemy without a drawn circle of equations and intent because he saw the Door of Truth open and saw so much of its information (and Al confirmed he didn't see the same door during their human transmutation, so he still needs to draw transmutation circles). That same episode explained that the body formed by the transmutation quickly died and they buried it, with Pinako (Winry's granny) saying it didn't look human. Anyone technically can do alchemy, but like the greatest art or quantum engineering some people have the proper mind and natural talent to develop that into incredible skill while others can read all the books and never be able to understand it well enough or have the skill to perform it.

The show takes place roughly around 1915 give or take a few years, but there is some pretty advanced tech for the era like the Briggs tanks being roughly 30s-40s in complexity. An explanation for it I heard is that alchemy supplements material science so they make more advanced things slightly sooner in history. Plus it's a completely different world only superficially related to the real world, it doesn't have to line up 1:1

This is give people that don't know what alchemy is and understanding a broad one anyways alchemy is the science of understanding the structure of matter breaking it down and then reconstructing it as something else; here's an example say you take water for a good example there are typically three forms water can take on which are steam ice and standard form liquid alchemy allows you to not only take the understanding of that material hydrogen and oxygen but also lets you change that things physical form what scar is doing is something called destruction alchemy there are three steps to making alchemy work the first is understanding what the thing your transmitting is made of the second part is to break down that thing and then reconstruct it into a different form or into something entirely different that still follows that law of equivalent exchange.

Alchemy is not magic, it is purely science. Just as we have math, physics, chemistry biology etc, they also have alchemy on top of all of it.
In terms of genetics, just as some people simply have a natural aptitude for mathematics, some people are just better at understanding alchemy.
The way alchemy works is by way of transmutation, the act of rearranging, deconstructing or reconstructing of matter on a molecular level. Any
transmutation requires the appropriate transmutation circle, which is a type of scientific diagram describing the desired transmutation process.
For example, to turn lead into gold, each lead particle would need to lose three protons. Those protons can't simply disappear however, and need to be placed somewhere else. If there were to be carbon gas inside of the transmutation circle, which there probably would be, those protons would be carried to them and instead turn them into Fluorine as a by product. Alchemy can also be used to simply rearrange material that is already there, such as Alphonse fixing the broken radio. This has no redistribution of protons, as he is only rearranging the already present molecules.
As for Ed, you'll find out why he doesn't need a circle.

In theory anyone can do what Ed and Al can do with their alchemy. All you really need to perform any type of alchemy is the know how. The only way genetics affects that is some people are more predisposed to book learning. Also some people are born geniuses and can learn to do things at an early age that others can take a lifetime to learn. But really genetics plays a very small role here and circumstances and lived experiences are what really determine one's alchemy ability in this show. It's not like Avatar where a fire bender can't learn water bending no matter how hard they try

One the one hand, Ed had nothing to do with the Ishvalan genocide. On the other, by becoming a state alchemist, he has officially gone on record saying he _will_ commit another genocide with his alchemy the moment Fuher King Bradly tells him to.
So from an outside perspective, you can see why Scar is including him. There's the vengeance against the soldiers who were there, yes. But there's also the fact that officially, that's what State Alchemists _do_ and _are supposed to do_ .

  • @chaosspear0195
    @chaosspear0195 2 роки тому +2

Alchemy ability’s are not genetic though some families due tend to have alchemist through the generations but its more something of skill that genes. As to why Ed doesn’t use the cicles is because he saw The Truth he has much more instinctive knowing of alchemy that allows him to harness the energy but still with a circle just not a drawn one. Yes he needs 2 arms if he wants to transmute without the circle a physical ⭕️ cause like Scar said when he claps he creates a ring that acts as the need circle but its only really a trick people who see the Truth get to do. To perform without the circle and can only be done by a using a Philosopher Stone. In his situation without both arms he would need a drawn circle to activate by touching with his left hand. The deconstruction and reconstruction happened on a molecular level matter can not destroyed but disassembled and reassembled.

He never changes the shape of his hand. He extends his arm shell into a sword attached at the wrist.
The shape is important (they say so later in passing) but they’re never clear about the specifics in the anime. I assumed it was the shape of the hands from what they say, but now that I think about it, it’s possible it could be the shape of the arms. Anyway, the specifics are not important to enjoy the anime.
