Hey Mike. Scott, formerly from Aristocob here. I think that’s the first time I’ve said that! Doing quite well here in NC and I appreciate the shout-out. I continue to smoke my cobs daily and have a couple in regular rotation that are over 25 years old. My attention turned to my woodworking channel and when we temporarily closed our site during a move my bride mentioned how nice it was to not have to ship orders or respond to pipe customers, so we just felt it closed. We have thousands of dollars on pipes all packed away, and I suppose one day we we have some NOS to sell. I get your desire to make dovetails. I have several jigs from years of my obsession with them, but rarely make them anymore. Anyway, thanks for thinking of me and make it a great day! Scott

Great to hear from you Scott, and glad to know that you are doing well. I'm sure those NOS pipes will be in high demand if you ever decide to jump back in. Take care my friend!

Simple answer is yes. Alot more choice these days in Cob pipe design. Very good choice for the new starter. Can try various tobacco blends without ghosting. They smoke well, easy to maintain a cheap vs briar pipes. Will invest in some briar pipes at some point, but the cobs do a fine job so in no rush.

I've smoked for 40 years. I got rid of my last briar about 10 years ago. Yes, briars and cobs smoke somewhat differently, and I prefer the cobs. I dislike the hard acrylic stems, so I buy replacement stems by the dozen from MM.

Can’t agree with you more. Cobs are like dating….briars are like marriage. One is quick and can be certainly fun but the other is for the long haul. 😇

For tomato growing, I compost all kitchen scraps like banana peels (potassium), and any other vegetable scraps, tea bags, coffee grounds, etc., and especially eggshells (calcium) and till it into the garden every spring. Potassium and calcium amendments help with tomato production in my area. Test your soil PH. It should be close to the neutral (PH-7) range or slightly acidic. Hope that helps.

I enjoy corncobs, using and modifying them. I haven’t been smoking long enough to hit the sweet spot in a briar.
Personally, I like the idea of supporting our local economies. (Missouri Meerschaum and Vermont freehand’s forever stems)
I have a few Savinelli’s (Rossi) but far more modified Missouri Meerschaums.
I hope they can keep their prices high enough to stay in business (after 150 years) and also keep their employees well payed and far above the poverty level.
Unfortunately Inflation is everywhere and those driving are choosing to speed up the runaway train.

One other thing to mention is cobs are. Super easy to clench. Due to the light weight. And I definitely. Added oriental silk. Hehe. But it’s anyone’s guess how much. I had some left in a jar. And tossed it into the mix. As I thought it would add a nice touch to the blend. Glad you liked it. Sincerely Jim

Love my 2 big Missouri Meerschaums: The Freehand and the General. I learned from you and others in the YTPC how to cut the protruding shanks flush with bowl. I then mudded the bowls and now LOVE these 2 cobs. Great smokers. I have learned a lot from your vids. Thanks for doing what you do. Great channel ❤️👍

In the UK you can buy a Missouri Meerschaum corn cob pipe for £3.69. That must be the cheapest pipe on the market! I have several briar pipes but am thinking of buying a corn cob just to see what it's like.

I don’t care for acrylic stems, so MM’s recently expanded offerings don’t interest me much. I also prefer nekkid cobs-which I used to be able to get from Scott. MM doesn’t offer as many, so the only cobs I’ve bought recently are their bags of seconds-which are still a great deal.

Don’t totally agree. The purpose of a cob for a complete newbie to pipe smoking and smoking in general, is cost benefit. A lot of people don’t know if they’re going to like smoking pipes at all. They might smoke it three times and decide they hate it, and realize they hate themselves even more for spending $50 on a briar they won’t pick up again. Cobs are the most sensible choice for those people. If the person is a former cigarette smoker, and has enjoyed smoking in the past, there’s less chance of bailing and an inexpensive briar may be worth it. It really depends on the situation, and the person, and what they’re trying to accomplish when it comes to choosing a tobacco pipe. Just my two cents.

Have you ever had a cob go permanently sour? I had to retire 2 of my first mms because cleaning wouldn't even get it out. I got another and have been cleaning it more regularly in hopes it doesn't happen. They both lasted me 2 months. I do enjoy the way they smoke but if that's an issue I dislike them a little more but maybe I didn't majntain it enough.

    • @CaneRodPiper
      @CaneRodPiper  Рік тому +1

That has never happened to me and I do about as little maintenance on a cob as you can imagine. Knock the ash out and reload or toss aside. I only use a pipe cleaner when it clogs. Might be a difference in the types of tobacco we smoke.

@@CaneRodPiper I did smoke a lot of latakia in it which I'm avoiding in my newer one. I believe it could be the wooden shank just got covered with tar and it's affecting it. I may try to drill or cut it out somehow, got nothing to lose. I just put them aside for now. Thanks

I have 6 cobs and smoked them pretty heavily over 10 years or so. When I smoke them I generally will smoke them 4 or 5 times a day and sometimes only resting them a day a or 2 before smoking them again. I've never had one sour but the trick is to clean the shank out really well with Qtips. And I clean the stem with Qtips and pipe cleaners dipped in rubbing alcohol. I also scrape the bowl out really well as I don't like to build any cake in my cobs. I suspect the sourness in your cobs is probably coming from the shank. Or if you over smoked them while allowing a Cake to form in the chamber. Cobs are really good at holding moisture that's why the generally offer a dry smoke. But if you allow much cake build up with our resting them as you build cake they can end up kinda soggy thus becoming sour. I'm not sure if that's what happened with your cobs but just sharing something's that have worked for me over the years. Your mileage may very and of course there are a million other variables that could factor in as with anything in this hobby we all cherish. Happy smokes!
      Jeremy

@@Heavydutyrocknroll hey thanks Jeremy. Yeah I suspect it's the shank. I want to cut it out or something but I got a new one so I haven't bothered. I did sun dry them to no avail but this new cob I have I've been cleaning way more and not allowing any cake to build up and it's been fine so far. I could try and deep clean the others but I just retired them it isn't really worth it since they were cheap. I appreciate it

It may vary depending on location. I checked smoking pipes before making the video, and they had quite a few in the 40-60 dollar range for the US market. But of course, if the economics are different in your locale, the conclusion would be different.
