Great fun! In 1976/1977 I drove my second-hand 2x4 2CV4 from Amsterdam to Leh, Kathmandu, Calcutta, Madurai and through Baluchistan back to my hometown. I just drove "the other way round" (turning the vehicle and climbing up in the reverse gear) while passing the nearly 4000 m. Fatuh La-Pas in Kashmir on the way to Leh and to Bamyan and Bandi-a-Mir in Afghanistan. I crossed rivers while the water came up to my dashboard! My 2X4 brought me back home safely after 55.000 km anyway. No 4X4 needed!
Seeing the way thos wheels hug the ground makes a mockery of Land Rovers enthusiasts obsession with "articulation". Just look at that suspension travel!
y hoy en día tenemos suv's 4x2 con llantas de 18" y 235 de ancho que no suben ni la cuesta del garaje mojada... Bravo por el progreso... (ironic mode off)
Only if Nissan Micra ever became the 'Must have car for the Paris-Dakar Rally". 2cv's have ran Paris-Dakar-Chad and other cross-desert rallye raids since the 1950's. Each 2cv was born to do this.
I just crossed the river in high speed in first gear. The speed avoided water coming near the points (ignition) because the cooling fan swept away the water. Enough air came in for the time being. After having passed the river I had to dry up all parts of the engine. It took me around 20 minutes to continue my trip through West India. In the meantime a local priest was stuck in the same river. He did not manage to get out. With the help of some people around us and myself we got him out.
Thanks for the reaction. Do realize that my 2CV4 was just an ordinary car so not a 4X4. Being in Leh (Ladakh) in July 1976 (!) I intended to follow the road to Manali. Police checked my car while they only gave permission for this road with a 4X4. After having checked the road by some of their own 4X4's they told me later that -even in July- they were stuck in the snow! That is why they did not allow me to do so myself. I came back through Srinagar again while taking two Dutchmen with me.
I would love to take it to some cheap car rally like the Detriot Gambler 500 or something and show everyone what it could do.I think everyone would be surprised
