Peter, no longer allowed to interrupt Adam, has resorted to digging up recordings of Adam's voice to interrupt in order to fulfill his insatiable urge

Really fun. There were some good tips in there. But best of all, you lead by example. Six years later, and you're still working on this podcast, fully committed, engaged, and updating and refining it. Bravo!

The SM7s youse guys use, are great, especially from the proximity effect they impart. Not sure which red vocal mic you used on Open Studio S1 E145, but it sounds way different, especially from that far away. Great episode today ! Thanks !

Enjoyed this! Have you done an episode talking about the mental challenges of being recorded in a studio? Can you bring your live-playing skills in? Do they overlap? Is it really that much different? Just a thought.

5:56 That IS a practice hack for people who spend more time having fun than intentional practice. I agree that it's not really a "hack" exactly, and that numbers 2, 3 and 4 are all the same thing, from different angles. But still, that's helpful. I'd say the knowledge given (including interleaved practice) holds up better than the room reverb and the first podcast jitters do. It's impressive that it's good enough that you're willing to listen back to your very first podcast, before you had the format figured out... and in public! Yeah, your info still holds up, of course it does🤣.

Thinking 6 years back takes me back to moving to the Pacific Northwest with my family in toe, and discovering the You'll Hear It Podcast and Open Studio as I got my feet grounded on new soil. That was the start of the infamous "spaceman from the PnW Deli" on the pod ;) Maybe we could open up our own practice habits over the past 6 years here on the comment section? I'll add mine below.

Over the past 6 years, I have learned that everything needs to be practiced in time with a precise awareness of where you are in the measure--especially the DOWNBEAT.
I've been studying bebop with a former bandmate of Barry Harris--and one of the top bebop guitarists back in NYC (Chris Parks knows who I'm talking about) and he always stops me to ask where I am in the measure--no vagueness allowed with expressing the time. That goes for all the important chords, family of dominants, arpeggios, half step rules, and harmonies--everything needs to be expressed IN TIME within the GROOVE.
Peter once made a comment on one of my speak pipes where he asserted "you can't decouple the melodic from the rhythmic." There's a difference between practicing rubato all the time, putting on the metronome in the background and practicing an exercise, or going through a tune and being intentional with the pulse and rhythm--how your melodic/harmonic content interacts with your place in the measure.
Jazz exists in time, within the folds of a polyrhythmic swing and perpetual propulsion. I still think that my speak pipe about hip hop and jazz within the BAM continuum would be a winner of an episode--especially if you brought on special guests from the hip hop world ;)
