Nestled deep in the remote San Mateo Canyon Wilderness, the Tenaja Falls Trail takes you to majestic Tenaja Falls, a cascading waterfall that plunges 150 into the scenic canyon. In this guide I’ll show you two ways to get to the falls. You can either do the short 1.5 mile (total) “roadside attraction” route, or you can take the 7.5 mile scenic and relatively easy route through Fisherman’s Camp and along San Mateo Creek. Which ever way you go, you’re in for a treat, because the scenery is incredible and the vibe is off the beaten path.

These videos relax me so much! Thank-you!
Great short trail! Love the Google Earth overlay with the routes!
Love your stuff dude, i almost always end up going out to the hike you post within the week. Keep them coming!
Thank you, good to know! Trying to get a decent mix of hikes up for all levels, glad to know that some of them are working for you. 👍👍
AWESOME!!! Been thinking of hiking this trail. Thank you for another great video!!
You're welcome 👍 Could be really nice if it rains over the next few days too.
thanks for putting this on my radar! hiked the scenic route today, super fun. falls looked amazing.
Ah that's great, glad you got to check it out, it's a cool one...
Did this today with my pup. Wildflowers were beautiful and everything was super green. Saw the helicopter! 😄 Thx!
Awesome, glad you had fun and saw the helicopter too... did it fly right up to the falls?
@@Hikingguy When we saw it we were on our way out of the canyon. We waved.😄
Fantastic guide. Thank you! This will be on my to-do list since I've only done Sitton Peak in this area.
Thanks, and yea, it's just on the other side of Sitton, and you can actually hike in from that side too, but it's pretty overgrown (or was last year at least). This way is usually pretty decent and a reasonable distance.
👍🍎 Great guide. Love the views as well especially from the falls area with the rocks. Definitely not a hike to do in summer though. -H
Yea, CNF in the summer can be brutal, this time of year is pretty great though, really green and some water is around.
Id like to plan a trip from Tejana Falls to Ortega, and exit Crystal Cove.
Did this today. Did the longs route both in and out. Been wanting to try this one for a while but the only routes I found were the short route. Long route both in and out is just under 9 miles and just under 4 hours. Great hike! The most ‘green’ hike I’ve done in CNF. Feet were killing me though on the way back going up passing Fisherman’s camp.
Nice nice 👍, and yea, with all the rain it's super green in CNF now, really pretty. Glad you got to check it out.
Can't wait until you're 100% better and can start doing the "difficult" rated hikes again. Hope you are well👍
Just reached those falls from Highway 74 yesterday, and back to the candy store. Amazing area. Pretty lonely and wild too: I almost did not see anyone (except near the falls).
Yea that's a great approach, will make a guide for that way at some point. I never see anyone on that approach either. San Mateo is a great underrated spot.
@@Hikingguy For what it’s worth, I find the area map not to be super accurate (unless I misread it), looping back to Morgan Trail. The map shows a trail that is actually private property, and we have to loop around.
You might want to check ( and correct me if I’m wrong).
It must be roaring water now that we had all the rain!! Careful!!
Great Review!!
Thank you! 🙏
I was not expecting such a cool falls and trail... I was expecting a black star cyn falls type situation. This was fantastic and totally unexpected, not just the falls but the trail to the falls. Even without water flowing over the falls i enjoyed it, can't wait for rain, this will be awesome. I didn't plan this hike i just added it after doing San Mateo peak, it was a 6 miles detour (round trip) but well worth it. I did have the place to myself for half an hour and then a couple people showed up... best to go early and beat the crowds... I got there at 10 am on Sat 10.30.21 so even on a weekend there was virtually no one there.
Nice, glad you got to enjoy the hike, it's a really beautiful one, and yea, if you get there early you can usually have the place to yourself. People start showing up for the short route to the falls later after they've charged their Bluetooth speakers...
