Fuji Reel 45 - Sidecast Centrepin Fishing Reel - made in Japan - circa 1960s. Unique Fuji design comes apart into only three pieces. www.ebay.co.uk/...
In Australia we (some of us ) use side cast reels , Alvey is our brand . I have a Fuji 45 and use it fishing off the rocks , it’s a very good reel and I could see how a spare spool would be useful with two line options, but they seem to be rare.
Hi. Sorry for the delay replying. Your Alveys are good reels, I have one. These Fujis are great quality and the sale prices vary quite a lot depending on how many buyers are around at a particular moment as they don't seem to be widely collected; so if you keep looking you might get lucky. I think buying a whole reel is the only way to obtain an extra spool these days. Cheers.
It is a great piece of design with high quality and advanced (for the time) materials throughout. The most striking thing for me is that it breaks down into only three parts: 1) body/foot, 2) Drum (or perhaps _hub_ ) and 3) Spool. As you say, a very interesting reel. Cheers.
Hi, TF. Yes. That is the flaw in the design of sidecast reels but it is far less of a problem with the heavy lines you would use at sea with a reel this size than it would be with small sidecasts and light lines for coarse fishing. There are ways to cope with it but the basic physics is undeniable. With a fixed spool the line twists one way on the cast and the twist is reversed on the retrieve but with a sidecast the twist imparted by the cast is not reversed in the retrieve. As I say: thick lines less of a problem.
Yes it can be a problem but manageable , the Alvey side cast reel manual suggests the rig should always have a swivel at the top (closest to the rod tip ) , and the swivel wire diameter should be equal to line diameter , allowing the torque of the fishing line to turn the swivel. Side cast reels are simple and effective, allowing long casts , pay out line to touchy bites , apply exact drag pressure with the palm of your hand and they are simple to maintain.
Tallshrew Fishing .After watching this great vid on Fuji reels i thought you`d be the guy to ask :) is this reel ambidextrous? i can reel with my left as well as reel with my right?
@@TallshrewFishing Your a Legend! & if you could answer me this wizard of the fishing world, :) would the same apply equally to the Fuji type 40 reel? ......awe fingers cross, gawds say yess! ;-)

Would there be line twist when casting? Very interesting,

You can flip the spool every second cast, that's the beauty of the Fuji design.

Yes. It works equally well for left or right hand wind and the ratchet selectors (x2) can also be set for right or left wind. Cheers.
