In our youth, my husband & I hiked this in winter when it was closed to all including Donkeys. We left late AM in snow & slippery ice without any preparation, telling no one our plans, descended to heat of Indian Gardens. Turned around & hiked back to the rim.. Took twice as long going up. I climbed out first from frozen ice/ snow, in complete darkness. Grueling but a spiritual adventure. About 9.5 hours of hiking. Water & restrooms seasonal, so none. When reached top, German winter tourist took me to El Tovar for hot cocoa, then they descended to get my husband with flashlights & lead him out. I will never forget looking up from Indian Gardens & thinking my God look how far we have to climb out.😮 Jeanne ( retired RN)
I lived in Indian Gardens. There were no tunnels, then. Winters were cold and lonely. We hitch hiked to Flagstaff and bought yarn arm cups of yarn, from which I made a patchwork skirt.
H Cris thanks so much for this video on a Grand Canyon hike. I really appreciated it. I also very much appreciate all the excellent reviews on your site especially the Inreach Explorer and the ACR PLB the former assisted me in a very bad situation on a trail in Scotland. I purchased the Inreach as a result of your review-great advice. best wishes Stuart (UK)
Wow, well, glad the InReach helped bail you out. Nice to know that it actually works when you really need it. I've used mine to aid others but never myself. And thanks for the kind words about the site! Glad it's been helpful.
I had a mule assigned to me, to travel back and forth to the Rim. Sometimes I have this nightmare; I am in Indian Gardens and want go back up to the Rim but they didn't leave a mule. So I have to climb by foot. Then I wake up. Desi Inez Lanni Little. I lived in the Rangers Station at Indian Gardens.
Question: COuld we hike to Indian Gardens and camp there? Then proceed to Phantom Ranch and camp at Bright Angel camp 2nd night, then hike out Kibito day 3? Would make it much easier taking an extra day.
Thanks for this excellent video about the trail! Going this weekend and really looking forward to it. Would you recommend seeing anything past the Indian Garden if doing a day hike? Thank you!
You're welcome 👍 you can keep going to Plateau Point which is great and pretty flat (out and back) compared to the rest of the hike. If you have the energy it's worth it > hikingguy.com/hiking-trails/grand-canyon-hikes/bright-angel-trail-to-plateau-point-hike/
Hi. Thanks so much for this and greetings from the UK. I have a permit to camp at IG in October and look forward to covering it on my channel. Quick question re driving to GC village: I’ll be driving from Vegas - do I have to purchase some sort of vehicle permit in order to drive into GC Village? I’ve seen another video where a hiker had to stop and buy a permit to enter the area. Thanks again.
You have to pay admission when entering the National Park, unless you get there early and the booth is closed, in which case just drive in, no prorblem. If you do pay for the entrance, it's good for 7 days to come in and out.
Absolutely love this video, so informative. My husband and I will be doing this hike on September 6th. We are staying at Yavapai lodge, what time should we be at the trail head and ready to go? Thank you very much!
Thanks for this great video! How long does this hike take from start to finish? I’m visiting GCNP in August for a day trip and really want to do this hike! Thanks.

Wow that looks so fun! Hopefully I can get out that way this year. Nice video!

Yes but camping spots are very tough to reserve in both spots
