I am European (France, Finland) and my husband is partly Canadian (Ontario) I lived in Quebec for 7 years. We moved together to Germany a year and half ago. We fully agree with everything you said. The hardest part for me in Canada was that everything seemed so far away. Driving hundreds of kilometres leads generally to another town or city that looks more or less the same. In Europe, I was so used to spend just couple of hours in a train or boat or bus and end up in a complete different country with different culture, food, landscape, architecture... In Canada, we pay for a lot of stuffs that are free in Europe. I was so used to even pay some fees to go to the forest that during my first weeks in Germany I was wondering “really? Do I really have the right to be here for free?” A park like Sanssouci or Babelsberg park in Canada, I am sure there would be at least a 30$ entrance fee. Canada still had its good sides but I am in love with Germany!

i'm not canadian or german (i am european) 😂 but i would say the reason you're now "experiencing the real world" is because in germany/europe, you have more acccess to different perspectives. i've been noticing that north americans can sometimes have very narrow views of the world, and i don't say this to be mean - it's also a geographic problem and that's something you can't change. here in europe there's a lot of interaction between countries and we constantly get news from each other here and it's easy to compare (not really in a competitive way, for example, if i hear that a country has made some political progress, it's just a fact, and i would be happy if my country followed suit).
americans for example can be very self-centered because from a very young age they're only taught about america and how it's the greatest country in the world, they don't feel the need to change things for themselves because they don't have or care about outside perspectives and how people in other countries live. on the other hand, canada gets compared to america, and it's easy to win 😂 so if you're better off than your neighbouring country, you also think there's nothing to improve. and of course this is an education system problem.
europeans seem to be people who like progress and >for the most part

Same here. Love was the first reason. Maybe I was intrigued, too. Certainly not myopic. Germany has to be one of the most exciting places to live, bordering as it does on no fewer than 9 countries all with very different cuisine, sights and cultures. In Manitoba you can drive for a whole day and not see much except for fields. Can't happen in Europe :-)

So enjoying hearing about how your German adventure has unfolded! I think we arrived in Germany around the same time from Canada (I came in June 2013) and I also moved for love and married my German husband. Wish I had an English speaking voice of reason to help me navigate everything I had to figure out by myself at the time!
I love how you renovated your RV btw. I first learned about Monschau from a German TV film called "Weihnachten für Einsteiger" and it indeed looks like a beautiful town. Cool that you live there! Definitely agree with you about the travel opportunities and health care system here.
About education levels - it's interesting how different my experiences have been as a fellow Canadian with other Germans. I feel like I have met so many more ignorant people here in comparison with back home. My experience with doing my M.Sc. here in comparison with my bachelor's degrees in Canada was also very contrasting - I found the university programs I did in Canada to be much more difficult than my master's in Germany, which was a breeze in comparison. And the Pisa rankings seem to think Canadian education systems are overall better and fairer than German ones. I don't have kids, but if I did, we'd move back to Canada stat for the education system alone.

What’s quite interesting about the work-life balance or working hours in general is: According to the OECD, countries with higher GDP/capita work less on average. Countries like Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands or Norway each being extremely wealthy countries per capita work the least out of all countries.

I like to watch your videos as I am a German who moved to Canada long ago. You are definitely right when it comes to health care and education. That ain't the best in Canada, although I think the Canadian university system is far superior to the German on all levels. Yeah well, the tuition is petty expensive, too.
The health care system in Canada ... sorry, but it is just not good. If Canada would be in the EU it would have one of the worst health care system in comparison to most European systems. It lacks efficiency, the waiting times are endless, the 'free health care' is far from free as you still need to pay a ton out of your own pocket that would actually be covered in the German system.
Work-like-balance in Canada isn't really a thing. People just work, but they do not work efficiently so they work more to catch up the time they wasted. From my experience you do not work that hard in Canada but you just work more hours. However, you only have 10 days vacation and most of the time no paid sick leave. It is okay once you are used to the fact that you definitely cannot miss going to work because you won't be paid. Canadians always go to work!
The traveling aspect is true. However, growing up in Europe and already traveled all over the place when I was younger doesn't interest me anymore. Long distance flights and travels are the same from North American or Europe. You need time and money. Time is something that most Canadians do not have though.
Both countries are good. Ultimately it boils down to what country is best for your job and life situation. Having children you better live in Germany because paying for day care in Canada might get you in financial difficulties. Earning good money thus paying way less taxes in Canada, no kids and enjoying more civil liberties you are better off in Canada.

As an Italian born and raised, married to an American, dual citizen American (I've lived there too), and now living in Germany (what a mess LOL) I agree! Education until high school level is so much better on this side of the ocean, so people here have a wider general culture imo, but colleges and universities in North American prepare you better for the real world and work

A few tips for you when looking for an apartment.
avoid the area around the main train station even if the rents are "relatively cheap" ..... even if it sounds like little to you, but there are apartments as "small" as dog houses that are extremely expensive,
and costs 400 euros rent "COLD" that means without heating and water, which costs extra, but with a bit of luck there is a "bachelor's kitchen" in it. the most important!!! you rent 4 walls with nothing in them, no lamps, no kitchen, no closet

@@dinas2369 i worked as a "caretaker" for 3 years ....." the english translation is WRONG, by the way" , i was treated like a "janitor" but had to do the work of a "consierge" ..... i finished the rental contracts, and found that the price was made by location and not because of the size of the apartment .... a student who wants to live close to the university had to pay more. apartments had extremely more rent if the bus / tram and subway are within walking distance .Unfortunately, many are so "blind" and pay without asking. The smallest apartment in my house was 14 square meters "big" and cost as much as a 65 square meter apartment
this is due to the greed of the landlord, and the "laziness" of the students ..... there is no difference whether you take the subway for 2 minutes or 15 minutes .... simple "rule of thumb" it depends on the lazyness of the student, the more expensive the rent get.

    Good morning 🌞🥞☕🥐
The perfect country doesn't exist, there is always something good and something not so good and we have to find the best way for us.
Work is of course important, but it shouldn't be the most important thing in our lives a balance is important for everyone not only to make a few rich people a lot more richer and we get sick at the end.
A good education and healthcare should be possible and available for everyone not matter who you are.
These are things a lot of people in Germany had to fight for, for a long time of course and it's still not over in a democracy. You can see it in the moment.

German secondary education has a more global focus than that in the US or Canada.
I went to "Realschule" and later "Gymnasium" to get my A-Level, in the 1990s, and we "learned" or got a "glance" about very different topics, just some examples:
Geography (Erdkunde in German), we learned about vulcanoes on Iceland, and general, Japan, PR China, US, I wrote papers about Alaska and California. Economic development in Africa. and of course stuff about Germany and Europa, ex Soviet Union and Middle East. The 1990s were a decade of change.: End of the Cold War, Desintegration of the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia (In "civics" we dealt with the civil war in Yugoslavia for at least three months, with presentations and papers). Start of the "public" internet. The "first" "Refugee Crisis" and migration in general.
In civics I wrote my A-Level exam, about agriculture and development in Saharan Africa and Kondratieff.

The comment on German education is very flattering... Maybe it is also because you are older, have met more people, travelled more, or are in a different (particularly well educated circle of friends in Germany). But I agree that it is not too hard to become somewhat educated in European culture and history "en passant" without much of an effort, just by travelling (even locally) because of so many historical sites and museums. Of course, a bit, including foreign languages is also forced on kids by the education system. Whereas it would take more of a conscious effort in Canada to read up on that stuff.

Second one is: Would I need more work experience to work as an engineer in Germany. You are right: the education is a big difference but maybe you only see the very well educated people in Germany. I‘m German and lived for 3,5 years in the U.S., in California. In America I experienced a medium education for everybody while in Germany it‘s more extreme. Here you don‘t have a medium education. You either have a very, very high standard of education or no education at all. Speaking of a school system in three different classes: Hauptschule (almost no education, people can only end up in very low paid working positions in factorys, in cleaning etc.), Realschule with 10 years of medium education and later medium jobs in offices as a secretary etc. and we have - what you probably talked about - very great education with multiple languages to learn etc. in 13 years of Gymnasium, often followed by four years of University. So not all Germans are well educated and the school system is not good, a lot of potential is lost because some people got too less education in early years. Medium education for everybody like in the U.S. gives more chances for higher development later on to everybody. So there are A LOT of Germans that are not educated at all. You probably just didn‘t get to know them.😉 But what‘s really better in Germany is the three years of very good Ausbildung in practical jobs, f. e. Craftmen Jobs, Electricions etc.

The important question that each one of us should ask him self is to why should our skilled youth move to Germany and not Germany move to the existing labour power through investment especially when that is within the borders of EU? Secondly if EU's economies are to be healthier how is that working when German investors prefer to invest in Turkey? Which is out of the Union while sells its production within, thus due to cheaper labour costs has a higher return back to Germany? Taking into account the fact that we all are entangled to Euro currency German investing policy neither promotes nor expats regional economic growth of EU.
It's intention is to strangle democracy into the EU by concentrating all the financial wealth, thus the political power, to

Taxes has nothing to do with health insurance. Do not mix it up.
you pay health insurance based on income and it covers your family, you and your wife and kids.
If the wife is working too she pays the same % of income and of cause the other part is payed by the employer.
    Any taxes involved ?
No, no cross finances except in the area where you get social welfare and then the health insurance is paid by the city you live in as the rent and the money for living. that is funded from city, country and federal government. All of these social insurances are pretty similiar regarding funding ... and it has been for over a century - cause they started as the emperors countermeasure to avoid uprises and a revolution against him while the social democrats and parties were esthablishing and crying for democracy.
The chancelor bismarck started those reforms that took up slowly speed over decades. paid holidays were an invention of the nazi party and other things too you will find even nowadays but people forgot quite often ... and that nazi party improved living conditions back then. the average farmer had debts for example in the beginning of the 30s and before end of war most farmers had no debts if you check those papers cause they paid debts back a lot from july 1944 onwards after the harvest started and the invasion had happened. they were only able to do so due to governmental price guarantees in that period ... and a lot farmers in the west started the post war era debt free. Often forgotten as the paid holidays and other stuff.
the price you have to pay is learning the language first and arrive with a good job qualification and finally forget any thought to get along with english language. you can use it of cause, it will help, but you will never arrive that way and immerse into the culture. i have seen to many struggling and later complaining that missed the key: fluent german skills as goal are mandatory
try to get an appartment and start the conversation in english. that is the usual case that people are applying in english feeling more safe.
no chance to get an appartement that way cause the german neighbours do not want to start discussions in english with the neighbour that ignores the rules or has "does not care" mentality regading the existing rules of living together. that brings a lot of trouble and explaining a german rental contract in english will end in a nightmare cause the landlord will have to explain legal stuff in a foreign language which will end in a legal battle about he had told me that ...
you speak german you wann live in germany so do not ask for anything beyond a german contract or the rules of living together in german cause the next one wants the same not in english but in chinese cause china has the biggest population.
and forget about living in Germany without german skills just to learn german cause you will not get very far with that attitude cause everything will be different than in your home country and of cause in german only. Do not expect any support of an agency providing foreign language support or forms or advice except regarding corona rules.
and a life with a german partner is a completely different story you should forget about cause the partner will manage your german life and integration and answering all those question you could have. if you arive as a single person everything will be different, cause no one will care for foreigners here, the refugee crisis has also a lot of consequences and ressources are low. never expect a huge welcome as a single person except you are highly skilled and got a job in germany while you were living in your home country. in all other cases things will not start with a huge welcome from the neighborhood ... and refugees will stay for years in camps among all the others and that for a reason cause there are simply no appartements for 1 million new arrived ...

Toronto has not so much more inhabitants than Berlin. Why do you think the cities in Canada are less boring ?

grüsse aus hagen düsseldorf hab ich meine lehre gemacht. personaly i dont like germany cause of the tax hell and you said the health system is so great here.... this is not true you get the minium threatment if youre not private insuranced! example i worked now 14 jears so payed in need a tooth implant state sais nope pay it yourself, next example my mother has cancer she only gets the cheapest threatment so we as familiy all together put together so that se gets the threatmen that she can live. Im fed up with ppl are thinking this kinda stuff its just not true!! High taxes here and bürokratie are a real pain in the ass here and thats the reason i will leave germany if my mom is gone there are much better places in the world to build up a much better live than here without this stupid Nanni state. Its mostly women coming here saying this kinda stuff loving the social system here but for me as a men we can pay all this, work our ass of, and still cant afford normal live cause of all the parasites politcans includet...

Yes, the working middle class paid 50% taxes and the highest class paid ca. 67% taxes + 19% VAT taxes of all, ´thank you´ merkel, she did VAT tax up from 16% to 19% a few years ago. When you have private health care the doctor helps you in next 15 minutes BUT without you wait 3 - 4 hours.

there is so little nature in nrw, i wonder what nature this ´environment´ tax should be for.
And the apartment rental price has exploded in recent years, too.
And on top of that the lack of housing, because sometimes 100 people look at 1 apartment
