    The gantrywork installed on the WCML and associated lines from the late'50s to the mid-'60s looks much less visually-obtrusive than the modern elephantine stuff that only does the same job.

    Why do some rail lines in the UK have third rail and other catenary? Is it a difference in voltage and ac or dc?

    • @skraggie
      @skraggie  8 років тому +3

      Third rail is 750 volt DC, overhead is 25000 volts AC

    • @Robbi496
      @Robbi496 8 років тому +2

      Thanks, I should have known that since the NE Corridor is partly 650v Third rail and partly Catenary AC

      Its mostly due to when the line was electrified and the tech available at the time it was done, pre ww2 it was mostly third rail and after ww2 it was mostly over head.

    • @extrude22
      @extrude22 5 років тому +3

      It should also be noted that there are two distinct third rail areas in the UK, the first is the entire region to the south of London and the second is the local train network around Liverpool in north west England. All other electrified mainline railways in the UK are electrified using 25kv overhead lines. The reason for this is historical. Back in the early 20th century the railways to the south of London were all owned by a single company and they chose to electrify with third rail. At the same time in other parts of the country other railway companies were electrifying with overhead lines to differing standards such as DC voltages and low voltage AC systems. Later on in the 1950’s 25kv overhead lines was chosen as the national standard and non standard electrified lines were converted to 25kv over the following decades and all newly electrified lines outside of the third rail areas were electrified with 25kv overhead lines.

      Nice answers for you there Rob, another factor is the third-rail networks around Liverpool and South of London (down to the South Coast) are primarily commuter lines but are too expensive to convert to OHLE, given the distance from the city centres - perhaps 100 miles maximum - that there’s not much point in doing so. DC still gives 100 mph running, to upgrade to say 125 or 140mph line speed with AC doesn’t save that much time.

    How come the DSD goes off at every AWS magnet? Is it something to do with LM in particular?

    • @StuAnderson90
      @StuAnderson90 8 років тому +5

      i think on leaving new st the driver prob lifted and pressed DSD so everytime it approaches a signal it goes off... it seem weird and annoying if he left it as normal it would go off when it needed to where the driver has instigated it going off everytime he approaches a signal it seems a weird way of driving

    • @jeremywilcox

      If I had just signed for the route I would leave it on just to make sure it really had stuck as to where the sticks were.

    • @russouk
      @russouk 5 років тому

      @@StuAnderson90 probably he doesnt even notice it...you dont notice it after a while,its just some drivers prefer it on automatic.....rather then have to set it.

    • @fetchstixRHD
      @fetchstixRHD 2 роки тому +1

      A reply on the Northampton to Euston video states that it's a habit to reset it at every signal - there were units where it could be missed...

    • @JulianShagworthy
      @JulianShagworthy 2 роки тому

      It's not actually the DSD 'going off', rather the driver is lifting the plate at every signal out of habit. It's the lifting of the plate creating the sound, not the sound leading them to lift the plate. It's just a way of driving that means the DSD will never sound of its own accord because you never leave it long enough between lifts.
