    I'm 54 and my wife and I are VERY worried about our future, gas and food prices rising daily. We have had our savings dwindle with the cost of living into the stratosphere, and we are finding it impossible to replace them. We can get by, but can't seem to get ahead. My condolences to anyone retiring in this crisis, 30 years nonstop just for a crooked system to take all you worked for.

    Turn on your brains, people. She isn't complaining that she didn't get SS from teaching, but because being a teacher in California makes you ineligible for almost all SS benefits you earn before OR AFTER being a teacher, or getting spousal benefit. Before I became a teacher I spent 10+ years working retail jobs and paying into SS, but once you get vested in CalSTRS you forego your rights to the system you've already paid into. That's what's unfair. My brother has a military pension AND he is going to collect social security from his second career--that seems fair, you get out what you put in. Not so with teachers.

    • @charleslemaire8137
      @charleslemaire8137 5 місяців тому

      Hold on! If you had worked summers or moon-lighted you could have added SS years and possibly removed the WEP from your SS benefits. The WEP simply replaces your benefit at a lower percentage because you're not destitute (earned under $12K/year). By the way, what did you do with all that money that you did not pay to SS?
      As for your brother in the service, he paid SS while in the military. So he looks like a teacher who earned a pension AND paid SS.

      @@charleslemaire8137 in California the money that employees would normally pay into SS is collected along with additional funds into the state pension system CALSTRS. In other states it may be possible for teachers to pay into SS and their pension, but not in California. And yes, my understanding is that even if you had a second job where you did contribute to SS you would not be eligible to receive most SS benefits in retirement. There is no conflict with the state pension system CALPERS or the UC retirement system, so I do know of teachers who collect from CALSTRS AND UC in retirement or some other pension system, but not SS.

In the meantime, we raised a successful clutch of kids who all obtained STEM degrees. We have retired early at 60 and are quite comfortable with 4 pensions and a very large 401K.
    Not sure I would advise anyone taking the path I did, but for me, it paid off and I'm still alive and healthy. Without my wife's support, I don't think I could have done all that I did. It's a tough world out there and NO ONE is going to look out for your future if you don't. People could care less if you fall on your face and starve to death or die of a disease. Sadly, because SS does not know about your situation (they are not receiving FICA, just like a non-worker), they have no way to know and can not inform you. In fact any statements will falsely imply you will make this much, It is the job of the teacher organizations to inform their members.

    Sadly, newscasters like to enhance the dark side; it's too bad they do not know enough to ask questions that would show the truth about how SS works and how it is treating teachers like everyone else. The culprit is the state (start paying SS for your employees), the employees (save that 6.2% your are not paying to SS), and the CFT for not informing teachers early and encouraging victimhood.
    Social Security pays a benefit based on one's lifetime participation in the program. One's top 35 years of income is used to determine a monthly income (AIME) and that is applied to a progressive bend-points formula. The actual numbers are indexed and move each year; I will attempt to use amounts from 2022. The first segment (to about $1K) is replace at 90%, the next segment (from $1K to $6K) is replaced at 32%, and any additional is replaced at 15%. This progressive formula is the entire reason for the WEP. Teacher are not folks that only made about $12K/year, but that is what they want to be treated as.
    "By law they are not allowed to collect SS" -- Hogwash! They get their non-gmvt income (AIME) replace at 40% for that first segment. My income from a second/additional job, would be replaced at 32% (maybe 15%), not 90%, or even 40%. They are ahead of normal folks.
    "Ineligible from collecting almost all of the SS she had earned" & "I get $43/mo" -- The interviewer could have asked if her Medicare payment came out before that $43. That is what normally happens. If so, she's getting about $180. WEP will adjust a gmvt workers income about $500, but only up to 50% of the pension. It is hard to guess what her SS would have been and what her pension is, but she is having a hard time.
    "Barred from collecting on husbands SS benefit" "I get nothing" -- Compare this to a normal dual-income couple; when A dies, B does not get both benefits, B will get the larger. The GPO stops the survivor from getting both the full benefit from yours and the spouse. Here again retired gmvt workers want a better deal than normal folks. The interviewer did not get numbers, but if he had a larger benefit, she would only loose the amount up to 2/3 of her pension. But that would have to exceed her benefit.
    "15 states that are cut-off from SS" -- Many state have a pension for teachers and pay into SS. The 15 states should change.
    "Adding another expense to SS" - Personally, I am not a big advocate of SS, I feel as if I could have done better if I had had the 12.2%, but I realize a lot of folks could not. So SS is like anti-old-folk riots. I also think the growth in SS (set by law at a very low fixed interest rate) is a huge part of the problem that SS is running out of money. But if teachers were not getting what the rest of us get, using the trust fund argument would be ridiculous.
    "They paid money in ... are not getting that benefit" - It is a bit like cherry picking to want for certain years at certain jobs, where as the rest of us get to contribute at all jobs for all years.
    "It is a lack of fairness" - Fairness is getting the same replacement at the same income.

Last time I checked all of the governing body of the country has armed guards but the schools can't get any. It takes an evil individual with the knowing of "gun free zones" to go there willing and commit atrocities. Are you saying it's ok to be teaching 5-7 year olds about sexuality? You've got teachers coming to schools talking about their personal lives and beliefs rather than just teaching basic education.
