Drive in snow with summer tires and risk it knowing it is stupid. Call the insurance company when you obviously get stuck... In Norway you would not only not get help from your insurance company, you would get a hefty fine from the police for being an idiot on summer tires.
I am an American who has been been binge-watching your videos for the past month. I love your sense of adventure, honesty and wonderful images. One surprising (completely unexpected) benefit is that you take my mind off the insanity that is going on in my country right now. So thanks not only for helping me to "see a composition" but also for keeping me sane!
Well, the only thing I might question with the LF shot is the use of Velvia 100, with its colour cast. Portra, Ektar, Provia, or Velvia 50 might have done interesting different things with the colour, and you can always adjust the colour balance in post once scanned to remove the red cast of V100. Otherwise, large format cameras handle adverse conditions in many ways better than digital - snow being a case in point (e.g. changing lenses is easier, and so what if the camera leaks) - and it's great to see TH using the Intrepid.
I've been watching your channel for awhile, thanks for continually inspiring me. Your landscape photography is truly incredible. Yet, I've noticed you are trusting your eye at more and more abstract images, and they are perfection! They have a felt-sense experiential quality to them that stir subtle emotions within and convey the presence of a moment at the pinnacle of its potential. In short, sheer magic! (My first youtube comment ever!) I thoroughly enjoyed this composition of the adjacent layered branches, the softness of resting snow, and an exposure choice that helped to reveal the mystery and beauty of what many others would have just walked past and left unnoticed. Loved this one! Cheers!
Thomas, I have no idea how you manage to remain so calm and positive when things start crumbling around you, but my hat's off to you (and you don't even have to eat it)!
I know its a very small detail, but I love the slider movements! It adds a very subtle, but cinematic dimension to your videos! Keep up the good work, Tom!
I do like the abstract shot a lot. It conveys a certain feeling, an atmosphere, that hits my spot. Also, what a beautiful story of a winter's day. I absolutely envy you for that camper van. It must be so blissfully cozy to be able to walk out in the woods and then return to a warm place without "really" leaving.
That first shot (tree branches) is simply beautiful. Well worth the "adventure" just for it. As far as not being prepared (tires) for the weather you encountered... a mistake anyone could have made. Hopefully only once. Glad you got out okay, and had the camper van to seek refuge in when things got a wee bit chilly. Another great video - thanks Tom.
This is one of my favorite episodes! The photos are exquisite, but your adventure in the snow is what I'll most remember. Truthfully, for a moment I was expecting to hear a sickening crunch of colliding metal. However, I'm happy that disaster was averted by mere inches. Thanks, Thomas, for reminding me to keep the adventure magical!
Great video, great photos. Seeing the 4 x 4 slide towards your new van I was like..........NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! how you kept so calm and how it missed!!!
Including that 4x4 truck thing. I have towed an artic with my 2001 forester. Not like here, out of the dicth up hill, but made plenty of difference for that 30 ton sucker to be able to get over the slippery bridge.
Two things: 1, you have an amazing eye; that shot was fantastic. And 2, I loved how, even though you were trying to get your van out of a tricky situation you were still taking shots to vlog. Brilliant.
I regret your difficulties. Well, not that much. It's better to see someone else's problems than experience them myself. I think I'm responsible to let you know that I was laughing during most of the last third of the video. Most engaging, Mr. H.
Thomas I just want to say what an inspiration you have been to me. I've learned not to get down when I don't get the image I wanted and to just enjoy the process. You've also taught me a lot of technical things. You're an ABSOLUTELY STUNNING photographer and I never miss a video! Thanks for everything you do!
OMG this like an action movie. I caught myself yelling NO NO NO at the screen and then a huge breathe of relief!! Holy cow I need popcorn and a drink.....LMAO
Quite the adventure. Glad to see you got rescued without incurring any damage to your vehicle. You did manage to get some nice photos and will have some special memories to accompany those photos.
I know it's not finished yet, but I'm well jealous of that van! I really liked that large format image you took. I thought it worked really well. Also, have you invested in a slider? I noticed a couple of shots that look like they were on a slider of some kind.
Amazing image! I really like how you keep having a lovely conversation with the audience while walking, and looking for images. These branches turned out to be amazing. I really liked your style of videos.
I guess the police car was on winter tyres, and that didn’t do them any good, so don’t feel too guilty for not having winter tyres. Loved the video and the first shot of the trees.
I love this channel. I always found landscape photography "boring" but you've completely changed my view and I was so wrong, your videos are great, super relaxing and informative and entertaining
Well first off very nice first photo! :D Second... I guess it's ok to be lucky from time to time (referring to that miss!) :O Good you made it out alive. And that new vlogging camera holds up really nice! :)
Hello Thomas, This work was absolutely stunning, but you already knew that. I shoot often in the snow as it feels like that is the only weather we have in Vermont except for the 48 hours of summer sometime in late July. I loved the composition of the first shot and the depth of the trees you were able to capture. I've never shot large format for fear of damaging some very expensive equipment in the elements, however you pulled it off. Excellent photos. Thank you for the share.
The trials and tribulations of a dedicated Landscape photographer. We do feel your pain, Thomas, when you are in these testing conditions, but there’s always an admiration for someone so dedicated to his craft. I do worry about you a lot mate!
slaWterCH Atlanta Georgia shut down from 2 inches here in the US. Meanwhile my wife went to work in New Hampshire during an 8 inch storm with crappy old tires.
That would be hilarious! But i think it's not the reason; there was also a sliding shot in the van, I think he either had a slider or cropped in and panned the shot in post :)
I used to live in Colorado, in the Rocky Mountains. As soon as you said, "Its snowing" and "Blizzard" and "I am going to another place to get another picture" I knew it was gonna be a bad day for you. Then you topped it off with "I dont have winter tires" I was shaking my head. One minor mistake after another. At least you have cellphone signal. Even the equipment to save you said it was too dangerous. If you were hiking, it could have been a life threatening event. Be safer out there.
For what it's worth, I really enjoy your videos and look forward to every one of them. They have a personal and comfortable feel to them and they inspire me to work on my photography more. Glad you finally made it out of that mess. Thanks for sharing your photography with us...
Mate, there was ice *under* the snow. Even the recovery Discovery at 14:55 couldn't find traction, or the cop 4x4 which would likely have had otherwise capable tyres on.
If winter tyres did anything at all, I expect Thomas would have driven up without difficulty. The police car might have been ok if Thomas and his wannabe rescuers hadn't been there.
Crikey! My heart was in my mouth when that Landrover slid down the hill! Someone was looking over you that day sir! I'm so glad it wasn't damaged !! Can't wait to see the full camper review!
wow. guys. Do some research on modern winter tires. Do a youtube search even. Step in to the 2010s :) Often proper winter tires go just fine on ice. I'm sorry you guys dont know that.
You really dont like being corrected do you? Studded Winter tyres, yes, non studded would as everyone has commented likely struggle. And yes we get big dumps of snow here in BC Canada.
Studded winter tires would've done the trick just fine... But for the british isles i guess euro non-studded tires are the norm so I'd pack some snowchains instead
Ooh Tom, what an adventure! Snow really does look beautiful , very peaceful & awesome nature . The difficulties are when you need to move & travel! I really like the large format film image, am quite fascinated by that camera -really interesting:) Glad it all worked out in the end & you got out, with yourself & the van all intact! :)
What a great story! :-) I live in New England so we get snow storms with over 12 inches of snow. But I have been in similar circumstances being stuck and having the rescuers also getting stuck! Oh and the abstract shot you got at the beginning was magic. Very beautiful!
Excellent video Mr Heaton! What an adventure and one to look back on with fond (?) memories. The first photo, of the tree branches in b/w. that is one I would hang on my wall, well done.
Here in Finland we call that kind of weather "Midsummer Day".
Your appreciation for nature is humbling. I love watching these videos before I sleep. Very relaxing and beautifully presented.
This video explains why insurance companies don’t like camper vans and professional photographers ;) glad to see you didn’t get hit

Thomas, I hope you understand how truly INSPIRATIONAL you are. And the effort you put in these videos, just amazing! Absolutely magic 🙏
That first image is absolutely amazing!! Great eye catching that composition.
William Manchester fully agree
He is going to eat his hat bois
Hat Wood?
Yizhar Amir NO TAKE BACKS!
That's not a bad photo, but trading away B&W for the purple shadows of Velvia seems questionable.
hat eating time...

This video had it all!, Pictures, drama, excitement and a happy ending, loved it, glad there was no damage.

Have experienced the same thing so many times with cars stuck in snow!
The first B / W image is magical!
Thanks for the entertainment ...
When I watch your video, I feel like I'm reading my story books.
So amazing you are!
totaly agreement!
Now go to bed.
This is one of my favorite episodes! The photos are exquisite, but your adventure in the snow is what I'll most remember. Truthfully, for a moment I was expecting to hear a sickening crunch of colliding metal. However, I'm happy that disaster was averted by mere inches. Ahh Man, you've got the best of two worlds! Awesome camera gear and a campervan!
That vehicle missed you by an inch! Thank goodness. Love winter and all it's beauty. Changes minute by minute when snowing. Loved your shots!
Great video, great photos. Seeing the 4 x 4 slide towards your new van I was like..........NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! how you kept so calm and how it missed!!!
That was absolutely awesome. In 17 minutes vlog there is every single concept of landscape photografy. Really glad to follow you!!!
I was expecting some local bloke to show up in an old Subaru station wagon on his way back home from the grocery store and tow everyone up the hill.
This made my day
Including that 4x4 truck thing. I have towed an artic with my 2001 forester. Not like here, out of the dicth up hill, but made plenty of difference for that 30 ton sucker to be able to get over the slippery bridge.
Another lovely little story - thanks, Thomas.
SO wish I was out and about with you - gorgeous place, space - and weather!
heard hats go nicely with a plain seasoning of just salt and pepper
Plot twist: hat is knitted ramen noodles. :p
Two things: 1, you have an amazing eye; that shot was fantastic. And 2, I loved how, even though you were trying to get your van out of a tricky situation you were still taking shots to vlog. Brilliant.
I certainly held my eyes tight when that second 4x4 came close! Lucky now you'll always have the van for when the conditions are bad!
Going back in time look through the old videos! This ones a beauty!!!
You held up well under some less than ideal conditions. Quite the adventure! Loved the photos.
That first image was so original. It had so much emotion in it. I loved it!
I regret your difficulties. Well, not that much. It's better to see someone else's problems than experience them myself. I think I'm responsible to let you know that I was laughing during most of the last third of the video. Most engaging, Mr. H.
That first image is magical! One of my all time favourites
WOW, That escalated quickly...
That what she said ;)
HA! :)
I know, Brett killed a guy.
Another very informative video blog from someone who is passionate about his work, well done.
Now that almost got you out of your comfort zone. Haha.
Brilliant.
Thanks for sharing.

Tammy Mellert lmaoooo same here 😁😁
Love how you show your adventures and photography together
I predict this video will be one of your most viewed very quickly. Glad to see you got out of the situation with the van & yourself intact..
Quite the adventure. Glad to see you got rescued without incurring any damage to your vehicle. You did manage to get some nice photos and will have some special memories to accompany those photos.
Oh man! How that 4x4 missed your van! Phew, so close! Love the video as always.
The first image turned out much nicer than I would thought. Very well done.
Shout out to that Land Rover driver for hitting that reverse in perfect timing!
Kenzie Mate I’d run out of options... last resort thing 😉
Yes, Thomas, that first shot totally worked. Well done!
cant wait for the hat consumption vid
Wow! That photo of the branches was just extraordinary! 👍😍
I know it's not finished yet, but I'm well jealous of that van! I really liked that large format image you took. I thought it worked really well. Also, have you invested in a slider? I noticed a couple of shots that look like they were on a slider of some kind.
There were a few cars that were on sliders too...
Love the first impulsive abstract shot of the branches, it works very well. In the end quite an adventure.
Awesome work Tom, I loved photographing the *Snow* here in #Birmingham
Hay Thomas, the way that you are presenting the nature beauty is awesome.. I’m enjoying watching the moments you live in nature
How did that not hit!
Amazing image! I really like how you keep having a lovely conversation with the audience while walking, and looking for images. These branches turned out to be amazing. I really liked your style of videos.
Hat with chips and brown sauce yummy 🤘
A pleasant, interesting and instructive story. The work of a photographer is hard work.
I guess the police car was on winter tyres, and that didn’t do them any good, so don’t feel too guilty for not having winter tyres. Loved the video and the first shot of the trees.
Mcguppy ... nope police car was on standard road tyres 😳 yeah go figure that one ... 🤔
I love this channel. I always found landscape photography "boring" but you've completely changed my view and I was so wrong, your videos are great, super relaxing and informative and entertaining
So I was thinking right, you should have winter tyres :P
Thanks Thomas. Feel like I'm living vicariously through your adventures. Amazing your new van didn't get hit. Luck was on your side.
Well first off very nice first photo! :D
Second... I guess it's ok to be lucky from time to time (referring to that miss!) :O Good you made it out alive. And that new vlogging camera holds up really nice! :)

How did that Range Rover miss 😱😱
the Discovery ;)
paul sparkes it’s a disco. Not designed for off road. Designed for being impressive on the school pick up run and towing horse boxes.
Because it was a Land Rover 😂
i love the background music and the winter wonderland scene make me feel so relaxed. i am not a photographer but i love watching your videos!!
Comfort Insurance is very well known in the Campervan world.
Great work. Platform agnostic, down to earth, enjoying a laugh at your own expense. Thanks for all your hard work to share your journey Thomas.
Really awesome!
Many thanks for showing the good and the bad, Thomas.
which app were you using for the weather forecast?
Looks like Clear Outside. Use it myself along with scope Nights
The trials and tribulations of a dedicated Landscape photographer. We do feel your pain, Thomas, when you are in these testing conditions, but there’s always an admiration for someone so dedicated to his craft. I do worry about you a lot mate!
Tiny bit of snow and chaos all over. We just had 2m of snow and everyone managed fine.
slaWterCH Atlanta Georgia shut down from 2 inches here in the US. Meanwhile my wife went to work in New Hampshire during an 8 inch storm with crappy old tires.
shut the fuck up you swiss son of a bitch...
Good Sunday evening to you too!
That's England for you mate.
Do swiss and norwegian people search these kind of videos just to comment how superior they are at handling snow?
Great story...loved the first images of the snow covered tree branches...good eye!
Hmmmm..... Not a 'Fail' but an adventure :-)
Love that you share your thought processes. Can’t wait to learn about the van!
Thomas, how did you achieve those sliding shots?
I think they were meant to be stationary but when you put a camera down in the snow things just start moving. ;)
That would be hilarious! But i think it's not the reason; there was also a sliding shot in the van, I think he either had a slider or cropped in and panned the shot in post :)
Maybe sliding in the snow :D
Heaton travels pretty light, and he's been integrating slides to video shot on the trail. I'm betting he shoots at 4K, then crops and pans in post.
LOL, good one!
I'm always amazed by the way you spot images, like the first image in this video, that I would walk straight past!
Aaron Meloccaro Thomas Heaton, listen to this man!
I love these videos so much! This is really want I would love to do after college!
You need winter tyres.....
poketfull Thomas spend all his money for his wife and his camera. 😅😅😏☺😍
PETAAA no he just needs winter tyres....
Nah, in this case winter tyres wouldn't help much more. There's no tire for ice, except tire with studs.
Absolutely gorgeous shot Thomas, I think it is one of my favorites by you. Very nice.
Well no one can say your videos are boring, when I saw the Land Rover on Twitter I thought it had hit you.
Tom I love that black and white. What an inspired capture...
i started posting photography videos, time lapses, i like your videos
For what it's worth, I really enjoy your videos and look forward to every one of them. They have a personal and comfortable feel to them and they inspire me to work on my photography more. Glad you finally made it out of that mess. Thanks for sharing your photography with us...
Winter tyres woudn't have made a bit of difference on that surface.
They make a massive difference.
Not on ice mate. You need studs or snow chains.
The winter tyre sipes would have grabbed that ice, or compacted snow as it actually was, and the van would have easily made it. :)
How does your other half put up with you? 😂😂😂
The prospect of insurance money eases the difficulty quite a bit. :D j/k
Someone
A beautifully crafted sentence :)
Someone lmaoooo ☺☺
As a Canadian, I could relate to all of that! I love the pictures though especially the first one. Thanks for sharing the adventure.
Next time get some chains!!!!!!! that is the problem, you havent ones....
like he mentioned - winter tires - that would have solved it. :)
DetroitDarin of course...but chains are cheaper 😋
You might want to research modern snow/ice tires. :) On ice, modern snow/tire tires do a pretty good job
wow.
Hahahahaha, last few minutes was hilarious! Loved the first photo of the abstract branches!
first image is just gorgeous!!
Don't think winter tyres would have made a difference there.
chris ferguson No I agree. That was hard Nevé with a layer of fresh snow.
I agree, a bit of salt & sand perhaps for a little stretch, just to lend traction.
Studded winter tires would've done the trick just fine... But for the british isles i guess euro non-studded tires are the norm so I'd pack some snowchains instead
yeah the police likely had some too and it didn't help them either.
Lord Descon The police had some obstructions to avoid.
Wow, can't believe the truck missed your camper. Close call!!! By the way, your first image in this video is superb; simply beautiful!!
Hurry up and stop yakking, get the shot before you and your cameras get soaking wet 👍😎📸👌
Tony Murphy hahaha yes he was yakking a lot
Ooh Tom, what an adventure! Snow really does look beautiful , very peaceful & awesome nature . The difficulties are when you need to move & travel! I really like the large format film image, am quite fascinated by that camera -really interesting:) Glad it all worked out in the end & you got out, with yourself & the van all intact! :)
Keep up the great work Thomas! Your honest and humbleness is refreshing esp in the UA-cam age. Kudos from Canada!
Thoroughly enjoyed this film. The essence is back!
Brilliant blog Thomas best yet. Not much photography but what drama. Your getting better and better at storytelling, really enjoyed it!
Beautiful. Exactly what I would have done. Most people would have missed it. Wonderful!
Looked like an awesome adventurer Thomas!!! I love being out taking pictures like that!!
Love the branches, remindes me to look smaller. The film shot ,came out beautifully. Great Adventure..
Adventure! Excitement - and beautiful photos! Must have a camper van, now.
