I'm really grateful for these videos. Because of what you teach, I am getting some books onto the first page. Only a couple of sales, so far but, I've only been doing this for a month and I have fewer than 100 books that are live. Please keep these informative videos coming!
That’s great, well done. Just keep moving forward.

Hello Paul Marles... Hope doing well, I accidentally happened to see this video and really got surprised to see the amazing keywords using techniques for book publishing... it's really a little time-consuming but hopefully, you could shoot the birds-eye accurately... Thanks a lot for your great efforts to show us this amazing method.. and for helping us to get success and have an adequate sell on publishing the books...
You're welcome. Glad you found it useful.
Thank you Paul for a awesome video!!! Which categories/keywords would you recommend for cool fathers day gifts journal/notebooks?
I don’t know. You would need to go through the categories list on the KDP platform and see what the best fit would be. Don’t get too hung up about categories though.
Thank you:)
Thank you too.
@ 22:46 "ooh, I've upset Amazon" 😂😂😂. Great info though, I've learned quite a bit and even created the keyword research spreadsheet which is an excellent idea, thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
Your videos are G R E A T !!!
Thank you 🙏
Thank you for these wonderful and useful videos! I was wondering, how do you get the AMZ expanded search tool to show the search volume? Mine doesn’t show that ... 🤔
Hi Anna, thank you for your kind words. The search volume comes from the Keywords Everywhere plugin. It does cost $10 though.
Paul Marles oh, ok I was wondering if I was missing something... thank you for that. I may look into the keywords everywhere as it seems quite reasonable in terms of price 👍🏻
@@paulmarles thanks for this great video... I have purchased $10 worth of credits and still not showing in mine
How ya captain, just found this channel and its quality. Quick question for ya.I am using the amazon search bar (with some extensions) to look up potential niche's.When I type in something like (just as an example) dog or dog notebook, I often find what I think are potential niche's with results of about 1000 with some good BSR too.Amazon will even say "displaying results 1-20 of 1000" or something similar. But when i click to page 3 or 4 of the results it will say something like " displaying results 30-40 of 10,000 results". I do it in an incognito window as well. Should i just pay attention to whats on the first page or am I doing something obvious wrong. Cheers my friend.
Just pay attention to what’s on the first page.
Thank you for the video, just a quick question , you said you put single words on the keyword boxes, does that mean that you put only one word by box ?
No. More than one word can go in each box.
Hi Paul. I am just about to do my first KDP book I have a question. Once you have logged all the keywords and published , can you go back and edit the description/ keywords? Thanks
Thanks Sir!Can I put the keywords in the description or unnecessary .
in the seven boxes :in one boxe must put 1 word or divers single words with comma , can you give me an example plz ?
In the description only benefits google search. But you need a good description to hep customers decided if your book is for them. In the keywords you can put more than one word separates by a space.
@@paulmarles Thanks Mr Paul
Congratulations for the video and the channel. I would like to know what tool you use to see the volume in the Amazon search bar.
Thank you
Keywords Everywhere chrome plugin. You have to pay $10 for 100,000 credits.
@Paul Marles Thanks a lot Paul , you're the best!
1. Is there a practical reason why you type the whole long keyword instead of clicking on what popped up in the list?
2. Do your previous searches affect the search results like on Etsy? There the results always change depending on what type of things you clicked before, because the algorythm tries to find out what you would like better.
You have so much good information, I’m binge watching your videos :)
You are exactly correct in my reason for doing this. I could open an incognito browser and click on the suggestions I guess.
@@paulmarles thanks. I wonder how much difference typing them out really makes in that. The incognito browser is a good idea.
Hello! I follow you with great pleasure, and I appreciate all the work you do. I also have a question, is there a video in which to explain what we should write or how we should make a correct description that sells.? what do we have to write in the subtitle? thank you!
Yes, there are.
@@paulmarles I am! Mental relax: What is the video in which you explain how to make a description that sells.?
Hi - just found your channel and I'm really appreciating the information you share. I had a question about BSR. I'm just starting my keyword research process. I'm searching on a three-word phrase which includes "academic planner" - most of the sales ranks I see are in the office product category. Should I ignore the product that don't have a sales rank in the overall book category? Thanks in advance for any help you can offer - it's much appreciated!
When doing research you only want to look in the overall sales rank. And yes, ignore those without a BSR.
I don't know if I missed it. But, were the chrome extension for that was suppose to be explained.
Thank you for the work you put into creating these videos. I've noticed in your income reports that the highest proportion of your sales come from the US. Is there a reason why you do your keyword research on the UK site? I'm also in the UK and was wondering which site would be best to use for research. I'm assuming the types of words American customers use to search could throw up quite different results and search volumes.
Use US site. Occasionally in the videos I forget to change to US but it’s the principles I’m showing. All of my books use US spellings of words.
Great question
Hello Paul, thanks you for your amazing video like always. I’m wondering if we need legal deposit in each country we publish our low content book ? Thanks you
Not that I’m aware of.
Do you always use the "All" filter and the UK Amazon site for keyword search?
I've noticed that using the "All" vs "Books" filters gives me significantly different numbers of results.
Paul, if you create a notebook. With only notebook written on the cover, then Notebook is the title and the subtitle is two LTK, correct?
You're my favorite 💛 . I wasted so much time stressing about keywords. I got it now.
Here's a virtual hug 🤗 . Thank you.
BTW, maybe you can try searching incognito in Amazon. You shouldn't get that whatchumacall it that popped up.
Your title can be whatever is written on the cover or the spine of the book.
Wow, thank you so much,
I have a question, can i use different words in one box of the keyword 7 boxes ? For exemple,(men women gift teacher) all in one box ?
Yes, absolutely
Paul, superb stuff. I noticed there are keyword slots in the "book setup" area and also in the "campaign setup" area. Should we use the same seven keywords for both? Which is more directly applicable to reaching customers? TIA.
You mean the campaign setup for amazon ads? You can use the same keywords for both if you’re talking about amazon ads as well.
@@paulmarles Right, the keyword slots for the KDP setup, and then there are more keyword slots on the Amazon advertising page. Would you mix these up, and do different keywords? Which is is more important?
I LoVe your knowledge, and that bad ass Tatt💙✌🏽
Thank you. 😆
@@paulmarles You're Most Welcome 💙🙏🏽
Hi Paul
Could you make a video showing us how to publish a book from beginning to the end specially to show us how to write the title and keywords and how to choose category on KDP because this things is making me confused.
thanks Paul for your efforts
Great suggestion!
Thanks for the video, Paul! Very good information. My answer is, do you use an alternative way of research, like an automatic one? One like Helium10 or Jungle Scout? and what do you recommend, manual or automatic research? Thanks in advance!
I sometimes use Helium 19 and/or Publisher Rocket.
@@paulmarles, thanks for your answer!
Thank you for sharing, I have a question: You said at the end that you use single words for filling in the keywords, why? Wouldn't it be better for rankings to use more words, as amazon permits for up to 50 characters?? and also, people don't really tend to search using single words?
Not just a single word per box but using a single word instead of a phrase. You can put in multiple words per box.
I really love your work. Thank you for creating this. You've given me the courage to follow my dreams. May I connect with you to ask further questions?
That's great. Glad you found the content useful.
Am I doing something wrong or has the AMZ suggestion expander extension been upgraded? I've tried it, but all it shows me is the alternate keyword searches. It doesn't tell me the search volume per month like it does in your video and I cannot find any options to change that. (EDIT: Nevermind. It turns out the search volume information was from Keywords Everywhere. Now that I purchased the credits through it, the issue has been resolved.)
Hello Dear Paul, I have a question please, when it comes to Demand and BSR... Do the appearing books should necessarily contain the targeted keyword in the title or subtitle ? or they should just belong to the niche? for example, say we are looking for '' Gothic skull notebook'' as a keyword and we find in the result a well-selling book but it contains in the title ''skeleton notebook'' or ''the day of the death notebook'' can we count it? cuz at least I may think sometimes that the author is using the searched keyword in one of the seven boxes even if it's not appearing in the title or subtitle but I don't know if it's really the case or not.
Thank you
Yes, you should count it.
Great video as usual ...just a curious question are you into low content books like coloring books they are doing really well right now especially for kids
No, I haven’t tried colouring books.
@@paulmarles then you are leaving money on the table you should try this kind of books just take a look at the BSRs on Amazon and you will see
Great info! Thank you!! What about if you have some quote on the cover? Would you still write as tittle "teacher appreciation gift" for example? Because it is supposed to be exactly what is written on the cover.. Have u had any issue due to this?
I would put the title of the book on the spine of the cover. Then you’re good to go.
@@paulmarles Wait a minute! Seriously? You could put a quote on the cover and put "Teacher Appreciation Gift" on the spine and that would be okay? OMG! Brilliant!
Thanks Paul, can you also go through KDP Categories. When I'm filling out my book information I have had a horrible time finding a good category. It may be in there but I'm not finding any. I did a book on internet safety for kids but couldn't find a good category to put it in. Thanks
Will do. 👍
@@paulmarles I would be interested in a video about categories as I am struggling to understand which category to use with my books.
I couldn't understand how do yo get this "product details" pop-up when you hover over a product. I don't have such thing. Is this one of the extra tools you showed?
THanks for the tips, BUT how do you find the estimated searches per month on Amazon? beside The KDP ROKET?
I don’t think amazon gives out that information. Most pieces of software calculate a best guess as far as I’m aware.
Hi Paul,
Just subscribed and been working through your vids for a few days. I've published my first book on Amazon and have a few auto ads running. Now I'm gathering keywords to create manual ads. I've been using traffic volume obtained with the Keywords Everywhere plugin along with Amazon's search results to find relevant keywords. I was wondering why you don't just use traffic volume instead of calculating an arbitrary BSR?
But is that traffic volume on Amazon? BSR is a direct measurement of books sold. I’m not sure why you wouldn’t want to use that!
@@paulmarles The BSR you're calculating may have nothing to do with that specific keyword. I'm gathering about 300 keywords to create my first manual ad. Your method seems a little time-consuming to achieve pretty much the same thing (indicating potential interest). When running the ad won't you see if those keywords convert or not? And then you can add or remove them depending on how they perform. But then again, you're selling in bulk while I'm going to focus on just a few items. Probably the best way would be to use the data provided by Publisher Rocket. That data also seems essential for finding the best categories out of the 16,000 plus available. But as you say, that's the "next level".
Ok, yes, I see what you’re saying now. I’m just teaching what has worked for me. You’re method seems perfectly reasonable. Although, what I meant by the traffic volume on Keywords Everywhere - that’s google search numbers which may not fully reflect search numbers on Amazon which are more buyer focused. That’s what this, like any business, is about though - find a method that works and run with it. In my manual ads I’m very specific with my keywords. I only use 3 or 4 phrases to target my main title keyword. But again, I’m sure there’s many methods out there. With 300 keywords you may find your ad spend is high but let me know how it goes.
@@paulmarles I published my non-fiction book a few weeks ago. My auto ads have now been running for a few days and have generated almost 2000 impressions but no clicks. Is it too early for auto ads to work effectively or is it normal to get no clicks for awhile?
Usually 2000 impressions and no clicks suggests work needs to be done on the cover design. However that’s very general because with auto ads it depends where you’re getting the impressions and where the impressions are. It could be on irrelevant keywords or products. Or bid price is low and you’re ad is not appearing in a favourable place. So you have to optimise them.
Hi Paul,
I always follow you on your youtube channel.
I have a question that may seem silly.
When I search the keyword on the first page it shows me a result under a thousand but, if I scroll down to the end and change the page for example page 4 or 5, the search result increases a lot.
Could you please explain to me how to understand if a keyword has low competition when the search results change significantly? Which page should I consider?
Also, I would like to contact you privately if possible.
Thanks so much for your kind attention.
Take the number from page 1 in the ‘All’ category. I’ve done a video on the reasons why.
Thanks a lot for this helpful video .I have just one question please : I can't find number or SEARCH Volume number while writing the keyword in the search bar ? Could you please tell how you displayed those data ?
Id like to know as well!
Quoting Paul: The search volume comes from the Keywords Everywhere plugin. It does cost $10 though.
When you're looking at the first page of your keyword research, do you include the books that are sponsored when calculating BSR? Also, amazing videos! I didn't even know KDP existed until I found your channel. I am now working on my first book!
Also another question! Do you reuse keywords when making a similar book?
No, I ignore the sponsored ads and yes, I’ll reuse keywords. Maybe in title in one book and subtitle in another.
@@paulmarles Perfect, thanks for the help!
Another question! How do you incorporate volume per month in deciding keywords? For example, I looked up some keywords and got the volume, but when I end it with "for men/for women" there are no volume metrics available. Do you still include "for men/for women" in keywords? Also, what range are we looking for in deciding volume metrics? Is 140/month pretty good or too low?
Hopefully last question haha!! Thank u for the help!! Do you also put the best keywords in the title rather than in the keywords section? Does it make a difference?
When typing keywords to see BSR, do we consider sponsored book BSR as well ?
No.
Paul, I love this series , but I am in the US and I don't see any stats come up for the search results like you have in the video. Do I need to turn on a setting??
Thanks for your help.
No. I search on Amazon.com.
Hi Paul, I need your channel and I would first like to say fantastic video. However, I do have a query on the video you didn't explain how you use keywords everywhere?
I’ve not done a specific video on it but in a lot of my niche videos I show you how I use it. Good idea for a video though. 👍
Paul, do you agree with me that you can get everything right but still not sell that particular book? which is why i mostly publish at least 10 books in every niche i target
Absolutely. Agree with you 100%. I have books where I’ve done lots of research and sell none. Then there’s books that I’ve just thrown up and sell quite a few. But I’ve found doing the research as I explain in the video I tend to get consistent regular sales although sometimes not as many as I thought I’d get. It’s about trying to get he odds in your favor.
@@paulmarles I like that
Hello sir.. can we have a different title and different name on the cover or it is compulsory to have the same name on both..
The title needs to be on the cover or the spine.
Wow they are recommending you 'Book of Eli' in 2020, worth dropping everything to go and watch it. ;-D
I’m not sure what your mean?!
@@paulmarles I meant exactly what I wrote go watch 'The Book Of Eli'.
Why?
@@paulmarles Cause its a good movie
Can you clarify, if I put words in the title do I have to use up one of my seven key word descriptors with those same words as in the title?
No you don’t.
When you take the BSR average are you only taking it from independently published or do you include other publishers
Usually from independently published books. However if it’s a book I can create and it’s not from a big publishing house with large marketing budgets I’ll sometimes use those.
Good stuff, but I would have preferred a pre-planned example that worked. The 'Teacher' example seemed like a poor seller, which is something we need to see to rule it out, but I really wanted to see a more positive one.
Hi.. if I am creating many books under same niche, is it good to use same keywords again and again? How to differ keywords for each book?
I would try and vary the keywords a bit.
Hi should I put only keyword with low competition in my title and sub or also I should put them in the seven keyword boxes but most of time I put individual words am really confused and am hearing some tell you shouldn't put alot of word on the backand to not confused Amazon algorithm to rank and index you r book
I don’t put the same words I use in the title and sun title in my 7 keyword boxes.
