Years later…but this is some of the most “competent” jazz guitar playing I have ever seen. Beautiful flowing lines, outstanding musicality and timing. I feel like most of the tutorials I watch on jazz guitar are teaching a completely different sport. This makes me wanna learn chess rather than checkers. Bravo.
maybe a matter of choice.. he chose to use it as a solid body, which you can do with a semi hollow, so the sound is quite compressed, giving a more melodic sound, but little percussion... he does not comp a lot , or almost, so no clarity is really required. Note that the smartphone sound is always compressed... He does not use the fender amp, so he maybe plays through the PA.. that is rarely the clearer solution! too
Reminds me of the time the late great John Collins and Tal Farlow has a gig together at the Sunset Hiatt House (Riot House) and drunken salesman and 2 inebriated bimbos were shouting and laughing cluelessly at each other throughout the whole set.
If you play in a gin mill, people are going to talk. The smart phone's electronics will pick up any sound near the mic. I once saw a Pete Fountain performance at his club in New Orleans. Two old ladies seated near me talked throughout the entire show. Very disrespectful IMO.
Wilkins is flat-out nasty. Heard him live the other night. After all the beautiful tone, chord melody conceptions, incredibly tasteful use of dynamics, astounding right hand technique that never stops swinging these occasionally blindingly fast lines, I could just listen to him comp behind other players FOREVER. Just the consummate accompanist. What a beast!
Master genius inventive classy gentleman in everyway. Got to sing with him at bella luna and in nj jazz club. Kept in contact for many years. Sent me music for For Biden. Will miss him muchly. God needed a master guitarist and he chose Mr Wilkins. Heaven is a better place.
Great guitarist that has been known mainly among musicians for decades. This is the best version of '"It Could Happen To You" I've ever heard on guitar - and it's live too ! Great treatment of the melody, beautiful solo lines, and overall tremendous jazz trio playing on his part. Check out his albums, of which he has several. Windows, Captain Blued, and Trioart of three great ones. Captain blued has an added bonus, with the great Phil Woods playing.
JW is a great player. I once saw him with Jim Hall - just the two of them - and Wilkins was just soaking up the knowledge from Hall. He was clearly thrilled.
Saw Jack Wilkins with Jimmy Raney and a bass whose name I can't remember at Zinno, I think, years ago. I have what I believe is his debute album in vinyle on the MPS?? label. Been out of print for years, seems like.
That album, Windows, was a life-changer for me. His version of the title track, Chick Corea's classic, was the earth-shattering version that became my inspiration for the song as a young jazz guitar student back then. That whole album was/is a mind-blower (so hip in 1973!), but Windows in particular. I still have the album. One of the treasures in my collection. Btw, speaking of JW's Windows being the seminal influence version for me, Jimmy Raney's version of this song, It Could Happen To You, is the seminal version for me of that song. Both Jack's Windows and Jimmy's It Could Happen To You are here on YT and strongly recommended!

Big loss …. Jack Wilkins was so high …
Thanks mr Wilkins for the music you brought !!
Jack Wilkins was a great jazz guitarist...saw him in Amsterdam...🎸🎸🎶🎶
Love how the Drummer is paying attention and reacting, nice
It's always good when the drummer is paying attention, LOL X-D
@@monkeyxx and unbearable when he doesn't!
one of the greatest, RIP
For those wondering, that is a Bill Comins GCS-1ES. Fantastic semi-hollow guitar.
Jack is an amazing guitarist. However, for whatever reason, the tone of his guitar in this video is not good.
It resembles my Ibanez AR-125 Amberburst, which is surprisingly good for the price. No budget, but plenty of desire, for a Comins.

@@manuelfraiman5534 It looks to me like he's using the fender, hes just plugged into the 'vibrato' channel.
He gets all the notey stuff out of the way, then digs in. Thanks for this, Mr. W and Mr. Uploader.
...meanwhile the tradition of a certain type of person talking loudly through a whole set of excellent music is alive and well...
vKarl71 talking during a kaxx performance is a great and long standing Charleston tradition

Hilarious and sad at the same time
Probably one that likes talking whilst giving head 😂

UA-cam give us the treat of being able to see great talent at the push of a button.

Jimmy Raney. To each their own. Jack has great chops.
@@golds04 Thanks for reminding me of Jimmy. Great jazz guitarist !
@@flm954 yup. Lots of great players. Many obscure. Like my teacher Joe Monk. Keep the strings tuned and burning. 😀
Jack Wilkins is a fantastic master musician and guitarist! Wish I didn't live on the opposite coast . Heard him live only once and he was great!
An undersung genius of jazz guitar
Drummer is having the time of his life playing with Jack!
and has no idea that his knock on the door speed increases when he delivers dominoes
Fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YOU ARE THE BOSS JACK.....WOW!
That is an impressive version of It Could Happen To You. Mr. Wilkins is very authentic and gifted. Thank you for this performance sir.
Nice 😎✨
He's burnin' it's great melody and has all the flash when he needs it. Maestro!
Amazing
Great!!!!!
I just love Jack! Most beautiful traditional melodic lines, and versatile professional guitarist. Thank you for posting!

Am hoping this stays up for awhile because I love certain parts, such as the shout chords leading up to trading with the drummer.
Thx best. Master of jazz
Just killin’
A beautiful and melodic improviser!
Simply wonderful!
Excellent playing!!
Nice! Very fluid and melodic.
Oh man this is great!

Ever had the feeling you are being watched?
what guitar is this please ?
Comins GCS-1ES
Comins GCS-1ES, around US$1700 from cominsguitars.com. (Could also be GCS-1, but is probably the ES variant.)
@@clarencevickrot3531 thanks, very nice guitar

It's a Comins CGS-1.
It looks like a Comins. Whatever it is, it sounds fantastic through that Fender amp.
@@fatabeeno Sorry but nothing sounds fantastic through a BF Fender amp.
I think I will go and Burn all My Guitars Now!!!......lol
Give them to someone who'll play them!
The clinking of glasses, and the clanking of whatever else is atmosphere. It goes well with jazz. I could do without the chitchat!
Please sit down and be Quite
Ask him why Windows sounds like Sugar Plum please.
Ask Chick Corea. He wrote it.
