My favourite is probably my No 8 with an oak handle and stainless blade, as it looks nice and didn’t cost much more. I keep them in my fishing tackle box and bag too, as they’re good enough to rely on but cheap enough I don’t cringe if I lose one.
I have a No. 7 that I use to EDC for several years I absolutely love it. Its a great food prep knife as you shown in the video. I want a No. 8 to throw in a bag for when packing a lunch for outdoors.
Thanks for the video! But in my opinion, mora has one advantage - the sheath. Because of it`s clip (like companion or robust has) you can wear it with your shorts without any belts. And if you are a tourist, you need to save each gram you take with you. Also, it is much more convenient just clip your knife to your shorts, sweatpants etc without taking your belt off. Opinel is a great choice undeniably. It is also would be interesting to hear, what you think about "best folder you can get for money" - when you pay you money and get more knife when you paid for it. And about the cheapest fool size modern folder. I`m sorry, English is not my native language, but I hope, you get the point I`m talking about.
Opinel knives are an amazing value, it isn't hard to find them in the $10 range in the US and they are good at cutting most things unmodified(I thinned my #8 to the point that it takes focus to avoid chipping when carving osage orange for performance reasons)
Supprised you didn't mention Ganzo or Sanrenmu or some of the other cheap Chinese folders. Sure they aren't as reputable as an opinel but they honestly can't be beat in value for money. Every one ive owned has been flawless. Although you can't really get them locally

Also the victorinox waiter is a great little folder in that price range, with so many tools in such a small package albeit no locking mechanism. I love mine, I added a pin in the pin hole behind the corkscrew and a knock-off tiny eyeglass screwdriver in the corkscrew which can be had on eBay for next to nothing if it is indeed a genuine fake one.

Nice choices. Moras are still as cheap as chips here in US. Would be cool to do a head to head with Opinel Inox vs Carbon? I have multiple of both and go back and forth on which I prefer. 'Morally' I feel I have to favor the carbon, but that shining .......
My favorites are Buck Bantam and Rival, Sanrenmu, Mora Companion HD, and Robust, Marttini Condor Timber Jack, Cold Steel Finn Bear and Finn Hawk, Ganzo, knives. Opinels are fine. Hultafors are poorly distributed in the USA.
Thomas Maloney I got 2 Buck Bantams, a small one and the large one. I love them, but the locks are crappy, in my opinion. The Opinel nr7 and nr8 nr9 replaced them. And although they out slice anything out there, they got issues as well. The wooden grip swells when it's wet. And then the knife won't open, or close. It can easily be avoided by keeping it in your pocket 95% of the time, but that never happens in my case. And Holland is a pretty moist country.
@@andriesquast2028 my Bantam locks are fine, but they are not used in heavy applications. I did break a blade on one using a lot of force, but lock held. Opinels light duty. I usually carry a CRKT drifter that I picked up cheap, which gets used and abused. For messy things, I bring along a Mora Eldris.
good knives are knives with a proper heat treatment for the composition and geometry. Alot of expensive knives dont even do that right, while some absolutly do. so price is not always the way to choose a knife. in fact Alot of the Sandvik steels are easy to heat treat correctly and affordable Generally have good geometry for the proper use.
@David Martin Portmann hey, nice info, mate! Sorry to hear you had problems with your Manlies. I have seen complains about gritty action and dirt under the scales in every review, but everyone praised the heat treatment. It's the price we have to pay I guess.
I bring up the Mora 511 and OKC SP-2 because that is the 2 knives I recently bought for my nephew..he is 10 yrs old and I just took him camping for his first time this past summer..I’m putting together a little gear bag for him for this year..one would be extremely hard pressed to come up with 2 better knives for under $40..both knives are tough as nails and extremely durable
Keep it simple keep it functional and it will last Something so right about these you chose Light as air and easy to carry They are almost always stocked so you can order one anytime and arrives that week And very and affordable and respected by any knife persons
Love the vids! I think, for me personally, I would choose a Cold Steel pro lite (clip point) for my ultimate budget folder. I have one that I've beat on for quiet some time and it's still going. I think I paid $20 usd for it. But, this of course is just my opinion.
I fully agree with your choice! Would go for inox for the opinel (or force a patina on the carbon steel one). (I actually use the #10 in carbon but modified the handle (more rounded) and the blade (drop point) and forced a patina on there so it's now more a size #9 with the thickness of the #10 handle. These two knives are actually still in use by me when I go outdoors.) Both the Hultafors GK and the Opinel #8 you show can be picked up for some 9 euro each. I added a Tramontina wooden handle 12 inch blade latin machete with pretty sturdy canvas sheath I bought in the US for 15 dollars (13,5 euro) to make my low budget set complete. My 3 knife set did cost me 31,50 euro so 35 US dollars or 51 Australian dollars. The Hultafors GK is the Bushcraft Association instructors knife and my personal one is in use since 2011 and really 'abused' by students learning how to baton and it's still as good. My modified Opinel #10 I have used for a year as my only kitchen knife and that worked great also. Now when I go and cook for friends and I'm not sure if they have decent kitchen knives I also bring it. So to me these two options are proven beyond any doubt. I do agree that the Opinel #8 is better for inside the trouser pocket and will also do all the food prep needs and small wood carving. Kinda have a box full of Opinels and I'm a Hultafors dealer but only became a Hultafors dealer after testing their GK.
I am definitely NOT a Bushcrafter but I really do like the Opinels. And the thing is they are pretty much the same knife they were 50;years ago or however old the Opinel Company is.
You need a tiered version of this, like under 30, 60, 90, 120! Im most interested to see where you think the point of diminishing returns lays... Which i imagine you'll say is with cold steel, Ontario, etc
That’s actually interesting because I recently bought a handful of folding knives from Walmar T for $3 a piece. Ozark trail non serrated that were selling for 5 bucks. They cut cardboard pretty well which is why I bought them and they easily flip open with a flick of the wrist without being loose. They are thick and have a spidie type hole
They are borderline junk. Not well designed at all. The stupid linerlocks always stick out too much so that it hurts your hand. Walmart has some decent folders but Ozark Trail are not good regardless of how much you paid for it.
dirtime I whole heartily disagree with you. The liner lock doesn’t effect my hand at all. It’s funny that you mention that. I actually looked specifically for ones that had the best liner lock that would fully deploy when opened. I easily looked through 50 of them lol. No shit. The number on the sku is 16162 20234. The package describes it as ozark Trail drop point pocket knife with a cleaver style blade. It’s got a cream or lite tan color. 3” ss blade. On the internet the model number is 576257741. I bought one first and tried it out. I liked it a lot especially at 3 bucks. Which is roughly 1/2 off the regular price. It’s a good beater knife that I can misplace or lose without a blink of the eye. I actually tested it vigorously out of a bad temper. It cuts cardboard yes. But, I had a really bad drainage clog. I just bought the drano type gel and was going to follow up with the really hot water. I usually just use salt and scalding water. But, this was extra tough. The pound cylinder of salt I had turned into stone. I cut off the top and started repeatedly stabbing at it full force with little results with the knife. I easily stabbed it a few hundred times before I was satisfied. I had 4 drains in close proximity effected. Bad clog. No chips, rolls or loosening whatsoever. Nor did I lose my grip or get a blister. I wore no gloves
dirtime I also remembered I hit the salt with a hammer too. It was literally stone. It was really old and the only one I had without going to the store lol
Totally agree. My Hultafors HD has been rehandled with a wooden one made from an old Hultafors axe handle. It's without doubt a fantastic knife. Arguably better then my many hundred pound knives lol.
I think, that these are great choices. Also the Hultafors Outdoor knife(s) ( two handle versions). Same as this, basically, a little more expensive, though, but with a little better sheath, for belt carry, black coating and 90 degree blade back, for the ferro rod strikers? Maybe mentioned in an other comment also? Nice day, no matter what!!
After using an opinel for a long time id have to say that there is one significant downside. Their water resistance. The varnish on the handles generally doesn't cover the inside so if it gets wet over time it will swell and deteriorate. The do make one with a synthetic handle which imo is a better choice. In terms of value however its still difficult to beat
My all time budget favourites Cold steel Bushman Condor bushlore Mora classic Opinel 8 carbon Victorinox Evo 17 Leatherman rebar If I only owned these I'd be happy
If you don't have to slice a pork, a car door or a truck tire in half, an Opinel will do almost all other tasks. For the price you'll get very good materials and the shape of the blade is one of the best I tried. No need to put more cash in a blade for those who don't slice anything but papersheets 😁😉
How are the AUD prices on Kershaw OSO Sweets? That's my usual recommendation for folks who want a good modern knife for the price of a gas station knife. You can catch them well under $20 USD with some shopping around. The Opinel is also nice because you can impress non-knife people with your sophisticated French style :)
Lol the last two knives I bought were the hultafors gk and the opinel no 9. I’m not sure if I’m tight or smart. Another interesting cheap knife is the Cima 1 at $30au. Many people won’t like it because it is a Chinese knock-off of an Esee 3 but for the price point I’ve found it to be a decent knife in use and a pretty tough little thing.
For a folding knife that is one hand opening and closing with pocket clip then ganzo brand is in that price range especially the delica knock off. That being said I love opinel but I was under the impression that the gerber paraframes have a faulty lock and I just wouldn’t risk it.
I would really love to see a comparison test between different pocket clips and their effectiveness at keeping the knife in the pocket. Much like lock strength, I need the absolute max. I exclusively use tri-ad locks, and drill a hole so I can put a pin in the finger guard, as Demko does on some of his customs. When I open the blade, I put a little bead of weld between the tang and stop pin for extra security. Then I dremel it apart to fold it. My fingers are worth it. I pay for my knives, and thus I need to ensure that they will stay in my pocket no matter what, despite whatever inconvenience it causes. Ideally, there would be some way to use a hardened steel padlock to really ensure the knife is never going to leave my pocket unless I really want it to. I think your scientific mind could really be put to great use helping me solve this huge problem in the knife world.
GK not avail in U.S.? They are avail. on Ebay Poland ~$18 shipped. Opinel's are tougher than they look. Very nice choices for low price ~$30 total. Thanks.
Honestly, if the opinell had a pocket clip, I would be on board with this choice %100, Unfortunately. . I have come to the realization that (at least for me) a pocket clip if more important than a lock on a folder. I would gladly take a slip joint with a clip as an EDC, but it needs the clip. An edc item is only as effective as it’s carry method as a better item that you left home is worth nothing in the field. . Loose in pocket carry sucks for deployment and comfort, belt sheaths get in the way/caught on things and requires ever pair of pants to have a belt, neck cary is fine but it can get uncomfortable and limits your knife choice as far as weight goes and can be an issue legally if not making an issue for being discreet, and pocket sheath is ok but requires a pocket and some way to keep it oriented for comfort as well as having legally issues like the neck carry, so ultimately the pocket clip trumps them all, because they are comfortable, discreet, and doesn’t lock you into a specific way to carry. A clip can go on the belt, it can go inside the waistband, it can go outside the waistband, it can get clipped onto a harness, into a pocket, the visor of a vehicle, or a neck lanyard. One can cary a clipped folder loose in pocket or even in a sheath. It truly is the most versatile and General effective forms of carry.
Opinel good for cutting cheese during picnic and other light tasks. That's about it's limit. No better than a $5 small paring knife from wusthof or kuhn rikon.
That's what i choosed too, just different mora model and i have one question. Any tested method to keep opinel dry in wet conditions? It soaks water like crazy and i end up with really hard to open opinel
I was under the impression that for a gentleman’s or general purpose multi tool or pocket knife softer steel was better? Harder knives tend to be brittle, it rather an edc type knife be corrosion resistant and tough and easy to sharpen, than a knife that’s likely to snap or chip rust and is hard to sharpen. Can anyone educate me on this, I’m a complete novice. Around 56 0r 57 would be ideal I was led to believe, but now everyone seems to be saying 56 is to soft
When you expect a joke video but Pete's having none of that. I don't know about down under but, over here you can get some San Reeve Mu knives in 420 for a similar price.
already got an opinel and this is exactly what i needed cheers, would love to know a good legal edc one handed opening knife so i dont have to fuck my fingernails when i want to cut food or open packages, plus a good long fixed blade
Noooo .. I’m not liking that Mora is not nr 1. Well they priced themselves out of the nr 1 market didn’t they lol. I remember the good ol days running around in the woods as a kid, sporting a Mora with the round red wood handle. What a knife..
Yes they did. I remember my first visit to Sweden (many years ago) talking to this guy and they bought the 510/511 models by the box and had them around the house, garage, shed, boat, garden, canoe, etc. and when one became dull they just threw it in the bin and took a new one out of the box. They were dirt cheap. I remember the last time I visited Sweden (some years ago) and noticed that most construction workers were actually carrying Hultafors knives on that button.
Hey mate, what sites do you recommend for buying knives? I feel like I can never find anything for the prices you mention. I'm sure that's a me problem and nothing to do with your info. Do you use aussie sites or have you found some yank sites that are better to deal with than others? Cheers.

Nice choices. Moras are still as cheap as chips here in US. Would be cool to do a head to head with Opinel Inox vs Carbon? I have multiple of both and go back and forth on which I prefer. 'Morally' I feel I have to favor the carbon, but that shining .......
issa double upload
Cedric & Ada Gear and Outdoors this is why I love you
My favorites are Buck Bantam and Rival, Sanrenmu, Mora Companion HD, and Robust, Marttini Condor Timber Jack, Cold Steel Finn Bear and Finn Hawk, Ganzo, knives. Opinels are fine. Hultafors are poorly distributed in the USA.
Thomas Maloney
I got 2 Buck Bantams, a small one and the large one.
Alot of expensive knives dont even do that right, while some absolutly do. so price is not always the way to choose a knife. in fact Alot of the Sandvik steels are easy to heat treat correctly and affordable Generally have good geometry for the proper use.
absolutely, the opinel has been bested by only a select few higher end production companies in terms of geometry
Manly knives are way to go then.
I was impressed that the Inox Opinel is Sandvik 12C. BTW didn't know how well it would cut until I invested $5 in professional sharpening.
I know nothing of the hultafors, but I’m absolutely wi you on the Opinel. I have several, and they’re great knives!
svord peasant mini as well.
Keep it simple keep it functional and it will last
Something so right about these you chose
Light as air and easy to carry
They are almost always stocked so you can order one anytime and arrives that week
And very and affordable and respected by any knife persons
Love the vids! I think, for me personally, I would choose a Cold Steel pro lite (clip point) for my ultimate budget folder. I have one that I've beat on for quiet some time and it's still going. I think I paid $20 usd for it. But, this of course is just my opinion.
Opinels are dope, plus you can customize the hell out of em. I made my no.9 one hand open relatively easy.
Awesome video! I think you should do more videos about cheapies but goldies!
%100 with you on choosing those two knives 🔪✨
I like the blade on the Opinel and the way it cuts but I've never really been happy with the lock.
Great video ! Love the concept
Hultafors, great choice; I own 2. But kabar dozier folder trumps the opinel.
I love the opinel
Highly recommend the Mora Kansbol.
The first Mora you show is available for 4€ in my German supermarket. A friend of mine has 10 so he can have one everywhere... :D
Great video and choices. That will be standard government issue for every citizen in my communist utopia.
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Rock against communism
Really nice video. Thanks. Can you tell us what are the best 10 lowest cost folding knives. Or what aspects to look for.
Wow! 32 AUD is just criminal for that Mora. The Robust can still be had for around $14 here in the U.S.
Ganzo F759 is an awesome budget Delica style folder at $9.00 CAD.
Great choices! Imagine all the money I would have in my beer account if these two knives were all I ever purchased and was complete with them!
I have been a fan of Opinel for 30 years though I prefer the 10 or 12
My all time budget favourites
Cold steel Bushman
Condor bushlore
Mora classic
Opinel 8 carbon
Victorinox Evo 17
Leatherman rebar
If I only owned these I'd be happy
You laid lawn in Australia lol
Burnt to a crisp now. Literally
OPINEL NO. 8 TREKKING KNIFE 18$ AND IS 12C27 SO YOU CAN GET STAINLESS ALSO. THERE ARE ALSO MORA'S IN THE SAME STEEL FOR 20$ OR LESS
Holy crap mora robust knives are expensive in Australia, here in Sweden they cost 14-15 aus dollars
If you don't have to slice a pork, a car door or a truck tire in half, an Opinel will do almost all other tasks. For the price you'll get very good materials and the shape of the blade is one of the best I tried. No need to put more cash in a blade for those who don't slice anything but papersheets 😁😉
In ireland I can get the robust for 13 euros and the companion for 12 euros, knives are really overpriced in Australia
How are the AUD prices on Kershaw OSO Sweets? That's my usual recommendation for folks who want a good modern knife for the price of a gas station knife. You can catch them well under $20 USD with some shopping around. The Opinel is also nice because you can impress non-knife people with your sophisticated French style :)
driver8sk I’ve had 3 total oso sweets, still one of the most comfortable to use folders I own
Lol the last two knives I bought were the hultafors gk and the opinel no 9. I’m not sure if I’m tight or smart. Another interesting cheap knife is the Cima 1 at $30au. Many people won’t like it because it is a Chinese knock-off of an Esee 3 but for the price point I’ve found it to be a decent knife in use and a pretty tough little thing.
Good video, thanks!
For a folding knife that is one hand opening and closing with pocket clip then ganzo brand is in that price range especially the delica knock off. That being said I love opinel but I was under the impression that the gerber paraframes have a faulty lock and I just wouldn’t risk it.
Nice. question , so I've just got my KME system, how do I tackle serrated edged knives? I have the serrated attachment of it.
Morakniv and Opinel. Saved you some time.
Damn, I’m now confirmed as a knife snob. 😂😂
Bonjour de France 🇫🇷 video très réaliste et très bien expliquée good job A salute
For $36-$40 bucks, I can get a Mora Companion, and a Kershaw-Emmerson CQC4KXL
Didn't the paraframe tend to close on you if used harder?
There's eBay style folding knifes that will work just fine. That said at the end of the day if make the exact same choice. And in fact i have!
What carbon steel is on Mora Robust?
You're looking truely distant viking today. 😂
I wish they make a heavy-duty 90deg.camp 1227 steel stainless😊.
I like them .got them .mora basic companion 🔥 on my hip.very 😎 😀😊
Hultafors GK vs Mora Robust?
I expected to see the Ontario RAT or Cold Steel Prolite.
Holy shot 30 quid for a mora! They are $12 in the states
I paid 30 for my gransburg (spelling?)
Well how much is a Z-Hunter?
Dope
What’s your thoughts on the Mercator? I’ve used one for a while now, not bad I think?
Oh sorry, just seen you’ve done a vid on them!
I liked it but they are quite pricey around here nowadays!
Please list the knife brand and specific model in the comments.
Opinel number 8 and
Hultafors GK
When you expect a joke video but Pete's having none of that.
I don't know about down under but, over here you can get some San Reeve Mu knives in 420 for a similar price.
already got an opinel and this is exactly what i needed cheers, would love to know a good legal edc one handed opening knife so i dont have to fuck my fingernails when i want to cut food or open packages, plus a good long fixed blade
Mora and Victorinox!!!!
Notification squad here.
Hey mate, what sites do you recommend for buying knives? I feel like I can never find anything for the prices you mention. I'm sure that's a me problem and nothing to do with your info. Do you use aussie sites or have you found some yank sites that are better to deal with than others?
Cheers.
I use knifeshopau mostly, but generallt hit up DLT Trading and BladeHQ for newer knives I want in a good timeframe from release
@@CedricAda Cheers for that. I've used eBay for all the cheaper stuff which have all been fixed blades to date but am looking at finally getting a decent folder so wanna make sure I'm getting some value. It's so tricky when 3 UA-camrs will shit can a knife and 3 will say they would marry the same knife haha
Keep up the good work.
Yup.
Really interesting and thanks will get a sk5 steel blade and check it out. Sounds great for the price here in Oz man
I got a Higo with Blue Paper Steel from BladeHQ and the heat treat was shit :/ way too brittle.
they are very cool, but often very hastily made. Mine was white steel and did well but I see huge variety and ambiguity
