Small proxies are your best friends when editing large projects, 4K etc. Editing large projects of 4K on any system is going to be very painful. Spend a little time organizing and setting your project up and it will work smoothly. RAM always helps, but even a system with a lot of RAM will run into slow downs if working straight from 4K.

I love your idea of editing on SSD then storing long term in an HDD. I have an ancient 1TB HDD and two 1TB HDD’s I bought last year. I am looking to buy a Mac Mini with the new M1 chip to create with. Question for you is: I wonder if the overheating is something to be concerned about with the M1 because from what I’ve read, it’s not only faster but runs cooler. If you happen to update to an M1 chip device, I’d love to see your result using the SSD.

If all goes as planned I will be using an M1 machine very soon so keep your eyes open 👀 I’ll also be upgrading the internal storage on it anyway and then of course upgrading my whole setup over time

I just bought a Samsung portable ssd and hooked it up to my Dell laptop. It works fine and stores fine. I cannot seem to use my generic Microsoft photo editing programs. Any suggestions? It just shows an error and I can't play with photo and video edits.

I’ve been on Mac so long I’d basically have to say I know nothing about Windows at this point. I’m using those same Samsung SSDs now though and haven’t run into any issues.

@@JRPCREATIVE thanks. I found some newer apps that work well. My old windows photo apps just were not cutting it anymore.

I have been getting the External Samsung 1T SSD and I love it. It's so much better than the HDD drives (in my opinion) I don't like the HDD drives because they have moving parts and I have had a few fail. I haven't had any problems with the Samsung SSD and no issues with slowing my computer down either. I have noticed that my download and upload speed is much faster on the SSD.

Samsung might’ve been the move, and my problems probably have a lot to do with my computer.
I’ve had a client before that I used to use one of those Samsung SSDs for and I don’t remember it being as bad. Although I still have to say I don’t really notice a difference in speed.

Same. I've had multiple HDD drives fail and I lost all my data at least 3 times. I'm switching to SSD

So if you edit on an SSD drive or an HDD where is the editing software file located? Do you have to load the software in the drives or does it remain in the computers original hard drive?

    • @JRPCREATIVE

Software is always downloaded to the internal hard drive on the computer. In most cases I think it has to be.
If you’re just talking about the project files, then those can be saved wherever you want. I’ve gone back and forth between just saving them to a folder called “project files” or saving each project in a master folder for each project.

Thanks so much. The first paragraph of your reply is GOLD and the rest helpful as well.

Well that was a quick video, but I am just keeping my seagate as my primary editing and backup source. Since you recommended that I don’t need a Sandisk SSD
