  • When I was growing up my Grandmother(s) liked to teach me the "proper" way to act as a Southern Lady, and if you really know me, you know I'm not really "proper" or a "lady"! But there are times when going through life that I am so thankful I was taught the unwritten rules around kindness and politeness from an early age. With the world seeming to embrace rudeness over the past couple of years, I thought it's a good time to remind everyone of some Unwritten Rules for Air Travel. When we step onto a plane, we're all in it together and if we ALL follow the rules, written and unwritten, it is a much more pleasant experience for EVERYONE!

What “unwritten” travel rule (or rules) do wish more people knew?

My biggest complaint is when people who are not handicapped use the airport wheelchairs to board the plane first. On a recent flight a very large man was pushed by an attendant to the boarding area. Then he got out of the chair walked to a food stand for a sandwich and drink, then sat down in his chair to consume his meal. When it was time to board he insisted to the boarding agent that he had to be first because of a “ leg” problem. As I turned out, after help boarding I sat in the first row middle seat (he was in the window seat). Because of the limited space I had trouble putting on my seat belt and I guess my wiggling annoyed him, he got up and moved to another seat on the aisle. I guess that didn’t bother his “leg”. When we arrived at our destination he was one of the first off the plane and literally headed for baggage pickup without any assistance! Talk about rude!

In regards to the don't fart on the plane... make sure you're not chugging down coffee before boarding if you know it works as a natural laxative for you lol

Men need to keep their knees in THEIR space. I once was in a middle seat where the men on both sides spread out like they were lounging at home. I spent the whole flight fighting for my space!!

Great tips for being a considerate flier. Any thoughts on reclining you seat back? I’m of the opinion that reclining it all the way is rude to the person behind you.

Good question! I think if you are on a redeye and most people are going to be sleeping, then reclining should be ok. I think the biggest thing with reclining is, if you are going to do it, do it pretty quickly after take off. Don't wait until the person behind you has time to set up stuff on their tray table then all of sudden you're pushing your seat back spilling their drink all over the place! 😳

Not sure on small planes how someone is going to get past anyone to get their bag!! Did have woman (I think an airiness employee pop up b4 dart beaky sign es off and ran to the back of plane to get her bag! Oh and if you need something with you in your seat get it and sit down. No up and down to get and put away stuff

I never had someone to wait for me to get off the plane. I travel right behind first class, and they rush ahead of me

Unfortunately I don’t think the rude people are watching 😬. I wish, instead of complaining about babies crying, people would offer to help the mom out for a little while. My friend had to fly with her baby girl long haul (they were moving), she was still recovering from her caesarean - maybe just offer to hold the baby for a few minutes. That would be a kindness.

Maybe don't plan a move within weeks of giving birth...That would be intelligence. You have known for 9 months what awaits. I'm not responsible for taking care of your child. Besides, people travel for all sorts of reasons. Maybe I'm traveling for a funeral, do you think I want to listen/take care of your screaming child in that event?

Spitting on and punching flight attendants?!
How about pissing on the floor, because the lavatory was occupied? That’s what the French actor Gérard Dépardieux did on a plane...

Rule 11: do not put a stroller or pram in the overhead bin or better leave your stroller at the door of the aircraft.

You missed one of the big unwritten rules, madam… don’t take your shoes off! No one wants to smell stanky shoes or feet.
I swear people forget that we are all in a sealed tube with recirculated air when we are airborne.
