  • The Epic of Gilgamesh and the 12-tablet Epic of Gilgamesh is an epic poem that is considered the oldest literary work from ancient Mesopotamia and the second oldest religious text after the Pyramid texts. The literary history of Gilgamesh begins with five Sumerian poems about King Bilgamesh of Uruk (Sumerian ad for "Gilgamesh"), dating from the Third Dynasty of Ur (c. 2100 BCE). These independent stories were later used as sources for a unified epic in Akkadian. The first extant version of this composite epic, known as the "Old Babylonian" version, is taken from the publication of its namesake (Shūtur eli sharrī: "Superior to All Other Kings") in the 18th century BCE. Only a few tablets of the epic were available in decay. The later Standard Babylonian commentary compiled by Sîn-lēqi-unninni dates from the 13th to the 10th centuries BC and may be based on Sha naqba īmuru[a] ("He Who Sees the Infinite Depth", in modern operation: "He Who Sees the Unknown"). About two-thirds of it is longer, and a two-tablet commentary has been saved. Some of the best copies were discovered in the ruins of the repository of the Assyrian King Ashurbanipal, who lived in the 7th century BC. The first half of the story tells about Gilgamesh, the king of Uruk, and Enkidu, a wild man ordered by the gods to prevent Gilgamesh from oppressing the people of Uruk. After becoming civilized by trying to procreate sexually with a temple prostitute, Enkidu challenges Gilgamesh to a test of strength and travels to Uruk. Gilgamesh wins the fight and becomes friends with Enkidu. Together they embark on a six-day journey to the legendary Cedar Forest, where they plan to kill the guardian, fearsome Humbaba, and cut down the sacred Cedar. Goddess Ishtar sent the Bull of Heaven to punish Gilgamesh for refusing sexual intercourse. After Gilgamesh and Enkidu kill the Bull of Heaven, the gods decide to sentence Enkidu to death and take Enkidu's life. In the second half of the epic, it is told that a long and dangerous event occurs to leave the mystery of Gilgamesh's eternal life, which is painful due to Enkidu's death. In the end, "You will never find life among you. When the gods created man, death was his share, and the gods kept life in their own hands." learns. However, thanks to the great structures he built, the duration of Siduri, and the immortal man Utnapishtim's account of the Great Flood, Gilgamesh's reputation began to decline after his death as interest in the Gilgamesh story increased; It has been translated into many languages and appears in popular works of fiction. The epic is considered a fundamental work in religion and the tradition of heroic epics; Gilgamesh provides the prototype for later heroes such as Heracles (Hercules), and the epic itself had an influence on the Homeric epics.
