Build Your Own Cedar Raised Garden Bed | DIY

- I made this raised garden bed from 2x6x8' long cedar planks. The corner supports are made from a single 4x4x8' long cedar post. The center supports are made from a single 2x4x8' long cedar board. The hardware used is GRK fasteners 3-1/2" lag bolts. Total cost to build is $297.12 including handles. The durability on this is far superior to an online pre-made box because the boards are better attached and the board thickness is much greater.

I have a very hard time getting these square, just made a 4 x 2 planter box, was a full inch out of square, then i got it square, finished it up, was 1/2" out.

I loved your video! It was so thorough and calming actually. Not rushed at all. And end product is beautiful!! Good luck. I am planning to make a planter box 3 feet deep I am wondering if I should put planks at the bottom and raise them by a foot so the inside depth of the planter box is 2 feet meanwhile the edges are 3 feet. Is that wise to grow flowers and herbs or simple veggies?
I think that would be a good idea. Just make sure the planks can withstand the weight of the dirt plus the moisture weights. Thanks for watching.
Does wood glue leach anything nasty? Just wondering how safe it is if you’re growing veggies.

Wow, You spent a lot of money on these, I have built these before with 6 foot cedar fence boards and even put flat boards on the top for a frame so that my wife could sit on them while planting. with the potting soil and dirt to fill them, and seeds, screws, everything, I did not spend even 1/3 as much. I spent perhaps $80.
Cedar all wood price increase with this stupid pandemic!🤬 sadly!

GRK recommends their stainless Pheinox line for cedar - super expensive and hard to find. Have you experienced any staining of the wood from the non-stainless GRK fasteners? Thanks for the great video!

What was the purpose of getting 1x2x8 cedar boards when you used 2x4 pieces for side support?
I was going to use them as little trim pieces for decoration but ended up making a trellis for the tomatoes
I saw some they put black plastic before putting soil? What Was that for?
Don’t know but I wouldn’t put black plastic in with my veggies. Leeching of the plastic in your food. Gross.

I just wanted to say thank you! I have watched this video so many times I have lost count. I used rough sawn western red cedar to build 8 4’x8’x12” raised bed garden boxes over the past 2 years and your video made that possible. You are right too about the fact that these boxes do last longer than the garden box kits made from cedar, but far less thick and flimsy compared to these.

Question please. Firstly, amazing video and great tips. I am curious though, why do you use glue at all? Could you not go with just screws?

Great video! Now I just need to convince my husband to make this for me. I think cedar is the way to go especially for me as well living in our high humidity climate here in Florida.
BTW the screws are GRK "Rugged Structural Screws" not lag bolts. I had a helluva time finding them using the lag bolt term.

Excellent video! We might extend it an extra foot or so tall, 4’ wide, so we can stand and plant a rotation of carrots, onions, etc.

I'm a lady and I definitely have to invest in some power saws I've just built this with some very old fence panels it's impossible to get my lengths even with my handsaw but hey my planters turned out great with a little improvising lol

question about the placement of the screws: they appear to be at the same level on both sides, one side just in further from the edge. if the bolts are 3 1/4 inch how do they not hit each other?
Is there any issue with the GRK fasteners rusting? They look waaaay better than green deck screws, but a trail of rust running down the boards would obviously change that.

Great Job! The lag screws look like "Rugged Structural Screws". I used them in my raised beds, too! I fill the bottom of my beds with logs, sticks, grass clippings, leaves etc., before I add my "Mel's Mix" as my growing medium. Then I add rock dust, worm castings, organic compost, etc. PRIMO results!!!

I should have seen this before I headed to local big box store yesterday! Instead buying 4x4, I got a piece of 2x4 for braces and corner!(: , I realized I may have trouble to brace the corner now
You can glue and screw 2x of those 2x4 together to make 4x4. No worries.
Fix It Now I did not have so much wood! I only got one pice is 2x4 for the brace! My box is only total 11 inches . So I think it will be OK. I don’t need so tall garden box . I’m a bit stingy with the wood. But I will invest more on the soil later. Thank you!

Great video/build. Those GRK lag screws, what diameter are they? You mentioned the length at 3 1/2" but didn't mention or list the diameter. Thank you. I'm building 2 of these.
We had store-bought cedar raised beds which fell through completely after the 3rd yr and now have to hire someone to custom make them- didn't realize untreated cedars are so expensive 🤑. Are these 3 ft tall you created? Thanks!
Maybe a couple 3’ metal pipes hammered into the ground along the outside edge on both sides would prevent any bowing. Thanks for the great instructions!

Trouble is, cedar in Australia is as rare as hens' dentures, and just as expensive. We often are forced to use pressure-treated pine to construct our raised veggie boxes even though it is apparently dangerous to eat foods grown in contact with it. Debatable though? As for price in Australia . . .stratospheric. One danger of working with cedar by the way is its sawdust can ruin your lungs, so do wear a mask when planing, sawing, buzzing etc.

No I didn’t. Just the mesh on the bottom and even that isn’t really necessary

Thanks. Yeah I’d use the glue. It keeps things taught beyond the mechanical fastener. Order some off Amazon or pick some up at Lowe’s.

Hi, we've had a lot of rain lately and the back of my yard is so water logged, squishy when walking on the lawn. Also we get water runoff from the neighbor's yard. So another concern for me is if they treat their lawn with chemicals and then can trickle into my yard where I want my organic garden to be that's so water logged. So I would like to make raised beds, but I don't want the runoff water coming from my neighbor's yard to get into the bottom of my raised beds and contaminate my plants. What can I do to remedy this? Would I put rocks on the bottom of the raised beds? What would you suggest?
Build them the way I made these but make the 4 posts double the length. Add a cedar floor board system instead of the mesh. This gets them up off the ground and the cedar planks acting as a floor will protect.
@@Archifx, Yes, but what about drainage for my plants? Wouldn't the cedar floor hold too much water in?
You drill holes in the bottom and add mesh inside prior to adding the dirt
