    Gosh, this is so helpful to me. I’m an old Protestant that will be starting RCIA in September. I’m ‘reading ahead’ and still hadn’t found the answer to this very question yet. THANK YOU. I know I will get GRILLED by my pastors and friends (ssh, I’m actually on staff), and it will be big news when it’s known. These UA-cam channels are wonderful.

    Like so many doctrines, sacramental confession to a priest isn't spelled out in the Bible like it is in the Catechism. But the scriptures he's referencing support it. Jesus explicitly gave his apostles authority to forgive and retain sins (implying they have to know what they are to decide), Jesus forgives the paralytic as the "Son of Man" and the people marveled that God gave such authority to MEN. Jesus deputized his apostles to preach the gospel, heal the sick, raise the dead, cast our demons. All Christians acknowledge that if a man heals or casts out a demon that he does so by the power and authority of Christ. Since Christ also gave them authority to forgive sins, it stands to reason that they have the faculty to hear confessions and forgive sins in the name of Jesus.

    The only way to avoid arguing with protestants is stating Matthew 9 , 1-8 ( So He got into a boat, crossed over, and came to His own city. 2 Then behold, they brought to Him a paralytic lying on a bed. When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, “Son, be of good cheer; your sins are forgiven you.”
    3 And at once some of the scribes said within themselves, “This Man blasphemes!”
    4 But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts? 5 For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Arise and walk’? 6 But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins”-then He said to the paralytic, “Arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.” 7 And he arose and departed to his house.
    8 Now when the multitudes saw it, they marveled[a] and glorified God, who had given such power to men. ) .
    It says Men in the last verse 8.

    I had this big ‘debate’ with a Protestant yesterday. They just point blank wouldn’t accept proof for confession.
    When I showed Leviticus they said it was the old covenant so didn’t matter and denied typology mattered.
    I used your James 5 verses and he still said it didn’t say that you confess to a Priest.
    Their eyes are closed so tight they just refuse to see what you show them…
    To the point he started using acts 10:43-44 and other verses saying it’s faith alone and you don’t have to orally confess your sins.
    Some times they are so consumed with their own interpretation of scripture they don’t care to listen to the scripture you provide as they deny it says what it says.

      Acts 10:43-44 are two lines out of a longer speech by Peter where his main point is that God accepts believers in him of all nations, not exclusively the Jews. It is a sub-point that God will also forgive the sins of those who believe in him from all nations. But Peter is not giving a detailed lecture on confession, forgiveness, how forgiveness is sought or given or anything like that in this speech.

      Acts 19 has people going to the Apostles, who were the first priests, confessing their sins.
      18 Also many of those who became believers confessed and disclosed their practices.

    I know that Apostle Paul speaks of confessions sins and disagreements to an authority in the church. I believe it is not meant to be for every sin but for problems which impact the integrity of the church.

    Thank you - very clear, and scriptural - so can be used in debates with protestants. Although, in my (long) experience, they will not accept any of it, even with those verses staring them in the face. Strange isn't it? So much for 'Sola Scriptura'.

    He said in this video “how can they forgive sins unless somebody confesses their sins. But his example in Matthew 9 didn’t actually involve “confession”. Jesus preemptively forgave the man’s sin (he didn’t even ask for it! What he did was (by faith) come to Jesus to be healed of his paralysis.
    I can think of another verse where forgiveness of sins is given without confession.
    “Neither do I condemn you; go and from now on sin no more.” -John 8:11

    I'm now confused. Please explain 1 Timothy 2:5. Can we not go to the Father direstly to confess through Jesus Christ? Can't he be ther mediator instead of a priest when it comes to confession?

      The priest has the same authority as the apostles and can forgive sins by the power of God. When you go to the priest, he is in persona Christi.

      Yes, you can go directly to God and ask for forgiveness. God is merciful. But think about this: why would Jesus give the Apostles the authority to (hear confessions and) forgive sins? It's a gift. Why wouldn't you use that gift? Is pride getting in your way of telling "a person" your sins? Jesus instituted the priesthood, the sacrament of Reconciliation, and established His church for a reason. They're all part of God's plan to get us to heaven. We can't do it by ourselves.
      Here's something else to consider: can you baptize yourself? No, you need a priest to baptize you. Can you and your spouse perform the marriage ceremony by yourself? No, you need a priest to perform the sacrament. Can you receive holy communion without a priest? No. Why then would confession be the only sacrament that you think you should be able to do on your own?

    Can a Catholic priest hear the confession of a remorseful non-Catholic Christian and absolve him or her of the particular sin?

      They can hear your confession, since the Sacrament is for Christians, not just Catholics. However, the Sacrament of Confession involves not only reconciliation with God, but also with the Church. I don´t think a Priest would turn away a protestant from Confession, as long as it is done with a full examination of conscience and have intention both to not sin again and go through the penitence given, but you should ask a Priest.

    I wanted to confess, but my parents don't believe you have to confess to the priest, and I am too scared of asking them to bring me to confession since they never did it before as far as I know, what should I do? I cannot drive to church by myself.

      Try to see if there is any event of the catholic community where a Priest is present. Using the confessional is great, but a Priest can confess you pretty much anywhere. However, one should not be afraid of asking such a thing from one's parents. You would be asking them to take you to church, you can even inspire them to have confession themselves.

      @@richardmh1987 Hello there. They rarely go to church, but we do watch the mass online every sunday. Its complicated man, they believe all that stuff is not in the Bible and won't change their minds even if you show scriptures, they only believe in the basics of Christianity, love thy neighbor as yourself, worship God only, and not sin.

    If a husband confesses adultery to a priest but then denies proof of adultery to his wife and says he already confessed to a priest, is that still a good confession?

      A good confession is when a person has fully confessed their sins directly to a priest and didn't leave any sins outside the confession. Only the husband will know if he confessed adultery or not.

    I'll stand on Hebrews 10,
    11 Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, 13 and since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool. 14 For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.

      Confession is not dissolved in this passage, only that continual Sacrifices don't need to be made.

      ⁠@@tabandken8562You are absolutely correct 👍 The Paschal sacrifice of Our Lord on the cross is not just present and effective at one moment in history. His sacrifice is perpetual, outside of time, continuing the Jewish Passover forever! Now the Holy Mass, EVERYDAY all around the world, heaven comes down to the Eucharistic altar and His generously loving sacrifice as the Paschal Lamb is an unbloodied re-presentation, offered with thanks (that’s what Eucharist means) to the Father, pleading through the Son, in the Spirit for the remission of our sins.
      The prayer said by the priest, ending the Eucharistic Prayer, reads:
      Through him, and with him, and in him,
      O God, almighty Father,
      in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
      all glory and honour is yours,
      for ever and ever. Amen.

    Jesus God himself granted power to forgive sin to apostles. But I don't understand when did he gave apostles the power to grant power of forgiveness to other people.

      There is apostolic succession. The Apóstoles were given authority to ordain others to priesthood.

    Call for the elders are spiritual beings not the priest, the higher spiritual elders will guide you to confess. It's not relating to an elder in our 3D world.
    You confess your sins, guilt, karma to the person you caused a sin too, like stealing from your parents for money years later you grow up and that thought is causing a blockage in your life, you then confess to your parents, thus releasing you from the guilt.
    Itsel not that hard to decipher people, seriously.
    When people confess to tge priest there is no humiliation, there must be vulnerability.
    The man is other people you wronged, the man is human, not spiritual beings, other entities nor humans with labels such as a priest.
    So with the example given, your parents can forgive you.

    When Jesus says the Son of man he is referring to himself not other people. We know this because he referred to the son of man dozens of times when talking about himself. It is also prophesized in the new testament that the son of man will come. Don't twist the words of the Bible to keep power over people.

      … AND only a priest is ordained to administer or withhold absolution, MOST important-something a layman CANNOT do.
      Dr John Bergsma, when he was a protestant pastor, was convinced by James’ epistle that the faithful must orally confess their sin to another person. But confidentiality was a major problem. He discovered that the Catholic Sacrament of Confession provided the best solution, leading him to conversion to Catholicism.

      @Cruz Later That is true but God is not limited by the rules or the structure of the Church. Jesus says "whose sins you forgive are forgiven. Whose sins you retain are retained."
      But he doesn't say sins not confessed are retained.

      I do agree that God is not bound to His own Law. However, ordinarily, a Catholic is bound to confess to a priest to receive absolution and penance, ie only the Church can forgive or retain. Otherwise, quite frankly you are talking nonsense.
      James 5:16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be saved...
      How does the Church know what sins to forgive or retain if the sin is:
      1. not audibly confessed or
      2. the sinner is not repentant?

      @Cruz Later it it not the Church that forgives sins. It is the individual priest, acting in the form of Christ Jesus. The choice of penance is completely up to the individual priest. So, a certain priest may hear your confession and tell you to say a Hail Mary and another priest may hear the same confession and tell you to do something entirely different. Some priests are gentle with their penance. Others are harsh.

      @Cruz Later the church requires 1 confession a year, unless a mortal sin is committed. Venal sins are forgiven as part of most masses, when we say together, "I confession to all mighty God..."

    No where on the new testament we confess our sins to a preist.
    Why ? Because after Jesus ascension he became or priest. there's no longer an office of priesthood for the church.
    Jesus fulfilled the Levi / Arron preisthood.

      Jesus nullified the old testament preisthood.
      Theres no more sacrifice for sins , Jesus entered at the holy of holy and he paid .
      The veil was torn!
      No more preisthood. " all Cristians are preists , we sacrifice our body's not to sin but to serve and live holy .
      The Roman Catholic preisthood has no biblical support.
      There's no more sacrifice for sins.
      None Of the Apostles Jesus made them a preist.
      No one to that matter.

      Jesus said if you can’t reconcile to your brother then take it to the church.
      Paul writes extensively in his letters to the Corinthians about confessing in the church and that the apostles are ambassadors of Christ and the ministry of confession is theirs to confess to

      Leviticus 19:20-22 (RSVCE): 20 “If a man lies carnally with a woman who is a slave, betrothed to another man and not yet ransomed or given her freedom, an inquiry shall be held. They shall not be put to death, because she was not free; 21 but he shall bring a guilt offering for himself to the Lord, to the door of the tent of meeting, a ram for a guilt offering. 22 And the priest shall make atonement for him with the ram of the guilt offering before the Lord for his sin which he has committed;
      This was the old Law, Jesus transformed this and gave authority to the apostles. The important thing here as Jews who followed the old law, confession of sins to priests of the church was a no brainer. So Christ giving them the power to forgive sins is no more revealing than telling them YHWH is the God of the Israelites. So when they heard it they knew exactly what was meant. This is why in the Gospel Jesus talks extensively about the need to forgive sins committed against you and to also reconcile with those you sin against and that if you cannot then to take it to the church
      Matthew 5:22-26 (RSVCE): 22 But I say to you that every one who is angry with his brother shall be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother shall be liable to the council, and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ shall be liable to the hell of fire. 23 So if you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be RECONCILED to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. 25 Make friends quickly with your accuser, while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in PRISON; 26 truly, I say to you, you will never get out till you have PAID the last penny.
      Matthew 16:17-19 (RSVCE): , but my Father who is in heaven. 18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”
      Matthew 18:15-20 (RSVCE): If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone.       1 Corinthians 11:31-32 (RSVCE): But if we judged ourselves truly, we should not be judged. 32 But when we are judged by the Lord, we are chastened so that we may not be condemned along with the world.
      2 Corinthians 2:5-10 (RSVCE): 5 But if any one has caused pain, he has caused it not to me, but in some measure-not to put it too severely-to you all. 6 For such a one this punishment by the majority is enough; 7 so you should rather turn to forgive and comfort him, or he may be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. 8 So I beg you to reaffirm your love for him. 9 For this is why I wrote, that I might test you and know whether you are obedient in everything. 10 Any one whom you forgive, I also forgive. What I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, has been for your sake in the presence of Christ
      2 Corinthians 5:18 (RSVCE): 18 All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and GAVE US the MINISTRY of RECONCILIATION; 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and ENTRUSTING TO US the message of reconciliation. 20 So WE ARE AMBASSADORS FOR CHRIST, God making his appeal through us.
