  • In this video I discuss strategies for communicating well with your arranging clients... and how I deal with my arranging failures.
My name is Elliot Deutsch and I have been working as a freelance arranger in Los Angeles for 15 years. In that time I've had the opportunity to write for a diverse and illustrious array of clients including Arturo Sandoval, Kennedy Center Jazz Orchestra, Atom Smith, Martina McBride, ACCENT, US Air Force Band of the Golden West, and many others.

Hey Elliot, one idea for a video is to present one chart you wrote for a client and point out the aspects that you would have done differently if writing for the Pandemonium Big Band. I'm always curious about these kinds of nuances.

Great video. I once spent an entire day talking to a client about what the word "dark" meant to him. Because the first major thing he said to me was "Don't write something too dark"...

Great story. I've definitely run into thing like that. As educators, we learn to describe things in different ways... but people who've never taught don't do that. I'd also recommend asking that client for some reference recordings; song that sound "dark" AND songs that sound the way they want.

@@PandemoniumBigBand Ya we basically spent a day just going over dozens of tunes asking "Is this too dark?" I eventually figured out he just meant "dissonant". :P
