David Mamet brought me to theatre. Did his play Speed the Plow at Wisdom Bridge in Chicago in 89-90. Met the man. Nothin but class in the old school sense.
Amazing playwright. His political opinions were pretty stupid though. Whatever you think about economic justice, it is not Communism. Whatever you think about social justice it is not fascism. And whatever you think about Global Warming and what we should do about it, "haha" is moronic take. Artists often think with intuition and emotion and are incapable of thinking rationally. Mamet is a case in point
Always a Mamet fan without ever having heard him speak. Somehow I was afraid that he would turn out to be an effete Harvard intellectual. How wonderful to find out he is a hard working, plain speaking, common sense kind of solid American. Maybe even a fellow Deplorable? Great interview!
I am so happy with Mamet's answer the the last question. Rather than list off a few favorite plays as I'm sure he's done many times and anyone can easily Google up, he just talks about what he wants to talk about and is much more entertaining for it. Even though I would have been happy to hear his favorite plays, that was better. Better to out something new out to the public. I think it's a great skill of experienced interviewees to give entertaining answers to boring questions and to know when it's appropriate to to ignore a point. I don't mean the equivocations of politicians who seek to avoid saying anything of substance, for this is the opposite. This is when people free to speak don't give a direct answer to a question for the purpose of giving a _more_ meaningful and substantive answer.
Only Those who obviously have never signed a payroll hate the commercials. I used to always mute during the ads but now I know who all of these companies are. I love that Ben is not too proud to pitch his sponsors. keep it up Ben! Fight the good fight One interview at a time!
He has been writing books about his political beliefs for a while. It’s easy to make assumptions about people or label people because that’s culture behavior that is prevalent
This David Mamet is quite an interesting character. He seems to have a genuine sense of decency and morals in stark contrast to the Hollywood environment he so long worked in.
OMG, I’ve watched most, if not all of these Sunday Specials. And this one is by far the most insightful and impactful (if that’s a real real word now) of the lot. It was a true pleasure to listen to David’s wisdom and experience of the world. At the risk of sounding overly patronizing, I truly feel he perfectly nailed it when it comes to what is happening in our culture and his perspective exemplifies how a balanced person can and should approach our current world from a westerner’s perspective.
can you elaborate on what substance you gained from this? I felt quite the opposite, and I was looking for substance, but I do not feel like I gained anything from this.

If Democrats would just listen, not even agree or be swayed by our logic, but just entertain it, this country would thrive. Civility would reign and the arena of ideas would be packed.
David Mamet is our greatest American writer, and a national treasure, and should be told so every day. His new novel CHICAGO is goddamn fantastic. 100x better than diminutive women at affordable rates.
I think this was a difficult interview for Ben although he handled it well. Mr. Mamet was not so quick to follow Ben's lead but made his own points when he wanted to. Interesting look at Mr. Mamet and really a pat on the back for Ben.
Mhmm. Ben has an agenda, no one will deny that. But he is not trying to shove it to the forefront of the conversation here. You can tell Ben has a high level of respect, and maybe even views Mr. Mamet as a Superior is some ways. As such, he let’s him take the lede.
I have to agree. Like when Ben was talking about the restaurant experience. Mr. Mammet just said hey those people were just enjoying themselves. Vs following the lead of getting whipped in a rant about those people. If that what makes them happy fine if they want to live with their heads in the sand that is there choice. And no matter what you say or do that is how they are going to deal with life. My take on that is. You can only worry about you dont worry about those people doing. Worry about yourself and do the best you can do for you.
Ben sweated his ass off in this because the certainty of youth was confronted by the knowledge of age. I counted seven changes of subject Mamet is for sure a cool dude. How do can you as a watcher tell? The pace or cadence of the spoken word ;)
This is a magnificent interview! Thank you Ben and David!!! Holy crap!!! David is sheer genius and a modern day Shakespeare!!! I’m better for watching this interview! God bless you both. I’m black, is it ok to like two Jews talking? Who gives a damn! I love you both! Last time I saw such a beautiful back and forth was Buckley and Sowell. You’re doing great work guys and gals at Daily. Thank you again and again!
Get Norm Macdonald, Ben! If you manage to do that your Sunday Specials may literally become as big as Joe Rogan’s Podcasts or at least make a huge jump.
Oh dear. Was it where he said the men who wrote the Declaration of Independence had only read the Bible and Shakespeare. Or one his other utterly moronic takes?

First and foremost, I am a big David Memet fan after listening to him at Masterclass. Second, knowing what he knows about storytelling and the distinctions of revealing character through action, it's no wonder that he see right through the bs. “They are speaking to manipulate us, whether they know it or not, to sidestep our process of observations, cause all we know about a person’s character in real life is what they do.” -David Mamet, in Masterclass Dramatic Writing. He has a keen eye for truth and a keen eye for manipulation.
I love how David Mamet stopped being a leftist when his leftist friends started criticizing Israel! Jews like Mamet and Shapiro need to stick together!
Amazing interview! Thanks to both Shapiro and Mamet. I hope you UA-camrs recognize the most important part of this vid, which begins with Shapiro's set-up at 20:33 and ends at 23:50 where Mamet wraps up some wonderful deconstruction of "social justice" economics.
The Hedge Police call back to the Window Tax discussed in the 1937 movie The Prince and The Pauper which was set in 15th Century England. "What's old is new again."
Communism: When I was a teacher, I needed a reading program. My school had no money to buy one. At the end of the year Principal said that we had $5,000 we must spend or lose. "I need a reading program so I can teaching reading!" "Sorry," Principal said, "State department says we have to buy paper clips and rulers." Every teacher said, "We don't need paperclips and rulers!" No reading program for my students.
The common saying is, when the world forgets about the devil, they all become EASY prey. When the world forgets/rejects God, the prey worships the predator.
The "Hedge Police". Brilliant. And spot on. I have been trying to count all of the police departments I see in NYC and on Long Island. The town police, the state police, the county police, the MTA police, the NYC police, the Amtrack police; the NJ Transit police; I probably missed one or two. Yet, crime in New York is up. In Manhattan, homeless everywhere. Trash and dog poop everywhere. Subways are a place to go if you need to get mugged; who needs Dr. Kavorkian when all you need to do is stand close to the tracks and wait for some nut case to push you? Why so many police departments but growing crime? Simple: it's NY. Maximum government. It's that simple.
In my experience. I was raised as a Christian in a small town. Every Sunday my mother made us go to church. As I grew up and my family interacted with the church I noticed all the gossip and drama that was being created amongst the members and people that viewed as role models as a child I saw them fall in to less then respectable standing. I then realized the hypocrisy of the church. I stopped going. Fast forward 20 years and I tried to go back. But I realized that no one at the church remembered me each week. Ibwould go in and people would see me as a visitor. Fact is no one remembered you unless you were putting money in the offering try. No one there cared about my spiritual health or my relationship with go all they wanted was for me to put money in the tray and they could care less of what happen to me. In a nutshell that is why less people are going to church. People have realized that churches are nothing but a piggy bank. I can worship in my own home. Fellowship is pretty much dead anymore.
I used to get the "smart ass" comment. I couldn't resist replying "Fine. I'll do the smart ass thing. You do the dumb ass thing and we'll see how it works out." I probably couldn't have gotten away with it if I weren't a lot larger than most people.
I like this. I am a new author of a scifi book series and it's interesting hearing how the evolution of film has come about. I would like to see my work on film.
The reason movies suck now, on the whole, is because guy's like David Mamet aren't allowed to write them. They're shut out. Unless you have a platinum SJW card, the fake, coastal-elite swag, a propensity for showing up at award's ceremonies with a few choice words about Trump and a willingness to stand for every Meryl Streep speech, you're out. Not part of the club. Maybe things will get better, but for now, like a lot of other art forms, you have to go back in time to find the really good stuff.
I’ve respected him for years. I was so surprised to learn he is conservative, but not really. He’s very intelligent and a free thinker. So, it really makes sense. He does not identify as Republican, which also makes sense.

Absolutely one of the most interesting discussions of culture, entertainment, politics and religion I’ve heard in ages. One of Shapiro’s best.
David Mamet brought me to theatre.

David Mamet - WOW what a guest! I very much like his wife and daughter as actors too. What a talented family 😊.
I could listen to David Mamet for hours. Brilliant, funny, an excellent orator. An American gem.
"House Of Games" is legitimately one of the greatest movies of all time. Mamet's brilliant.
David Mamet is an old school real man. Good for you Ben, for bringing David to the show. Good job man
God bless David Mamet for REDBELT. Underrated af.
And The Edge, Steven Crowder's favorite movie!
"Only three people subscribe to The New York Times, and two of them own parrots." - had me rolling.

Thanks for the referral 🤙
It was okay.
agreed, though i liked Redbelt better.

Agreed. It’s a subject I would really like to see more hashed out.

@36:00 "Bernie Sanders was kicked out of a commune for not working enough." That's just brilliant and needs to be made viral.
I read his short play Oleanna maybe 15 yrs ago and wow was he ahead of his time.

David Mamet is so cool, when he goes to bed, sheep count him.

He's from southside of Chicago. He must have known bad bad Leroy brown
I swear to show this better every week Ben great show!!
