John is so talented & down to earth. Kenny is just so cool & the best drummer. Both men are humble & together they generate an atmosphere I could sit & listen to for hours. No pretense, no bs just being who they are.
The end point that I got from this, is there can be drum machines, software that can sound like a guitar, even AI that could have amazing vocals, but, it has no creativity. At the end of the day, nothing will ever replace heart felt true live music. Sure we can have synths, drum machines, samples and auto tune, but when it comes down to it, the heart of music will be people like the ones in this interview.
I just love the fact that John isn’t a guitar nut in the classical sense. Hes not doing a pentatonic scale. He’s just a dude that played around with a guitar long enough to figure out good sounds.
I bet you money he knows the pentatonic lol. Its never bad knowing theory.. Ive heard many guitar players say they don't know theory but they went to school for music, they are lying. by the way if you playing a pop song you are most likely in the pentatonic scale, if not the minor scale or major scale, and they are all the same idea just about.
Yep. Love this series Kenny. The Goo Good Dolls are one of those bands that for whatever reason you realize just how may songs of their’s that you know until you here them. So many memorable and hit songs from them.
John explains music and his process in a way that everyone can understand. It’s one thing to be able to do it, even cooler to make it palatable for those who may not even play guitar or sing.
You know how incredibly talented JR is when I can say I fell in love with him before I ever saw him lol....I was sitting in my car in a CVS parking lot in Massachusetts when Name came on the radio. I was glued to every lyric and began to weep. My next thought was I gotta find out who wrote this. Been hooked since. I resonate with his entire personality and statements in pretty much every interview. He'll always be my #1 Rocker Writer Artist. You don't forget when a song brings you to tears. It's a religious experience.
KENNY! I need to reach out to you and say THANK YOU for existing in the world and creating all the amazing music that you have over the years. I remember very well listening to you with my first girlfriend back in the 1990s and we had so many great memories together! She passed away at age 43 from pancreatic cancer, and she was a beautiful blue eyed, dark hair size 8 wonderful person that I was with for almost 20 years. the world sure misses her and I wanted to reach out to you and say thank you so much for the memories!
He stays with his limitations but doesn't limit himself. He does what he can and builds on it and doesn't give a s*** about theory and traditional guitar playing does what you can do and one of the most important things is he has what I call melodic sensibility which is essential to put out pleasurable audio product LOL it's the hair that is the most incredibly consistent, phenomenally crafted feat of nature that defies all age physics and logic. 😏
This was a great interview - it's just a conversation and it's like being a fly on the wall listening to two super talented guys talk about their processes and history.
Should have mentioned it before. But, the two of them bouncing knowledge and experience back and forth made watching this very entertaining. Just the experience between the both of them. I’ve watched this a few times. Love it guys. Truly a great watch.
This channel is very underrated. All that work , and the videos are great. We have to get this promoted better. You deserve it buddy. Ps: i recently watched the MTV Unplugged John Melloncamp, and it was so awesome to go back in time and see the young Kenny, but also your yhe man now. Keep pushing buddy. I appreciate all the hard work Brian Breece Philadelphia, Pa
I was just on the camera crew at a smaller show the Goo Goo Dolls did in my area and the few times I had to go backstage I was amazed by the number of guitars I saw. I've been to Guitar Centers with fewer guitars. I regretfully didn't know many of their songs going into the event, but afterward, I had a whole new appreciation. It was an amazing show, and I got to see the band interact with several people behind the scenes and they seemed super down to earth. They definitely earned a fan that day. Also the part at 16:07 really hits home. I've been having those thoughts a lot recently so it helps to know that experience isn't uncommon. I feel like I should have had to pay money to listen to this conversation lol. great stuff from two amazing creatives.
Kenny when you and John were talking about Tim Pierce I immediately thought of his guitar solo on the song Change by John Waite. That in my opinion is one of the greatest guitar solos of all time!
Fantastic podcast. Tell Johnny he gives me butterfly's 🦋 the only guy ever besides my X 1989. True.. I'll tune into your podcast again. Entertains for sure... ✌️Luv 🤙
How is Kenny 71!?!? He looks like he’s in his early 50s and a very fit early 50s. Dang! And I just saw John at Missouri state fair. Dude is RIPPED and his voice…like silk. Brilliant show. Got his set list and a pick. 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼❤️
I can't imagine how tough it must have been to work with John Mellencamp! In interviews I've watched of him, he comes across like a lyric from "I Need A Lover." To paraphrase, 'It's my way or "know the meaning of HEY HIT THE HIGHWAY!" '
I really enjoy your conversations Kenny with you and John such great story tellers great podcast and shows . I went and seen the John on Saturday night and I was blown away unbelievable. He was touring with matchbox 20 . The only part of the show I hated is when the goo goo dolls finished there set . Could have listened to them dudes all night long. Hope the goo goo dolls tour Australia next year .
I just stumbled upon this video, and never heard that you had your own channel here Kenny! I subscribed immediately! You always were a big favorite drummer of mine. I'm going to check out your podcast, too! Glad you're doing your own thing!
Hey John I am amazed at the gift you got been given to play guitar and sing and come up with awesome hits but bro y pray for you and family and just want you to know whatever is bothering you I would love to be your friend and listen and try to give good advice I have a lot of struggles in this life it's a hard life John

I love hearing John talk about his songwriting process. He makes it sound so easy. Just strum the guitar, babble, and then words pop out.
lol Crazy right?
I’m a writer so I kinda get what he’s talking about lol

Im a bad speller sorry

WTF is going on with Johnny’s face? He is looking like Michael Jackson.
Maybe you should have kept YOUR FACE!
