- This week's Classic Rewind takes us back to 1997. Mauricio Gugelmin had knocked on the door of victory earlier that season, running out of fuel while leading on the last lap at Detroit, but he finished the deal on the streets of Vancouver. It was his lone win during a nine-year Indy car career.

Wow, what a great race! I'd forgotten how good the CART series was during those years!
I know that everyone is biased but for me, the 90’s were the golden age of racing. Indycar, CART, F1, IMSA, ALMS, NHRA, etc.. The racing was intense and still had a bit of the danger of the old days that forced drivers to be “gentlemen racers”. Sportscar/endurance racing had closing speeds of near 100mph between classes and the GTP cars early in the decade were the pinnacle of absurdity. Governing bodies were struggling to limit the new computers, Panoz, mclaren, Mercedes, Porsche, et al were battling in GT1. It was a candy store for race fans with a touch of the ruinous corporate domination that was to come. I feel lucky to have seen it first hand. Videos like this bring back so many happy memories of going to every race my dad and I could make it to. Thanks for the upload.

Loved the Vancouver Molson Indy, it was my vacation for a decade plus, last race I saw when I was living there.
I got to see all but two. The best days of my life!!!! Back when it was Little Al vs Michael!!!! The truest Glory days of AOWR!!!

Wow....the memories! I was in high school, was a weekend....took the skytrain to stadium station, and verrrrrrrr.....uhmmmmmmmmm! That amazing mrrrr echo of engines as the cars curve around the stadium, in the some what tunnel of pacific st......will never forget.
i remember that sound too. the way every car would roar was intense. the camera doesn't capture that zip and wif of air when they pass by haha

I remember playing this circuit on a game called "Andretti Racing" on my grandfathers Windows 98 computer. Great times

it was pretty cool to see riding back and forth back then. the sound of the race cars was way louder than the trains. crazy to think of the speeds.

I always preferred this track layout in Vancouver to the other one. This layout was simpler and the sections leading up to the hairpin and the one underneath the sports arena were mega 🏁
I supposed it is never wrong combining both courses together making it longer, that would be a real circuit that even Sports Cars will get behind on with CART. lol
They should never have closed Westwood. Now that was a gentleman's racetrack. They ran the Atlantic series there a few times...

Thank you so much for the upload! I lived in this City my whole life and I remember going to these races each year with my mom as a child and by myself since I got older since she couldn't stand the noise anymore, lol. Half of the course now has been redeveloped into condos, and the other half City traffic still resumes. I hope you guys bring back some City racing back into Vancouver. We welcome you guys back with big open arms. PS; please upload more Vancouver races. ;)

Awesome video! I think the next one-hit wonder will be the 1998 True Value 500 which would be the first IndyCar posted a TNN telecast! Other one-hit wonders would be the 1996 Las Vegas 500K, the 1997 Las Vegas 500K, the 1982 Road America race, and the 1997 Phoenix 200!
I'm agree with you, and put in that list the very first race of CART in Phoenix in 1979.

I would also add the 2002 CART Grand Prix of Chicago, the 2002 Grand Prix Americas, the 1998 Visionaire 500K, the 1998 Pep Boys 400K, the 2002 CART Grand Prix of Mid Ohio, and the 1998 Atlanta 500 Classic to the list of races that IndyCar seriously should post online as classic rewinds! I'd also add the 1999 Mall.com 500 and the the first Australia IndyCar race as other one-hit wonders!
1997 is the last golden indycar season.
Gugelmin’s only career victory.
Vancouver needs to bring this back to the city.

Loved this race. Shame IndyCar doesn't run here anymore. Massive shame :( this was probably my favourite race here ever. Shame I never got to attend a race. I was hopping to attend the race this July at Exhibition Place but with this Corona Virus I doubt it will happen SO I left Toronto anyway to Alberta

I know it will probably never happen, but I would love to see IndyCar race at Monaco. Just the tunnel part of this race is reminiscent of the tunnel part at Monaco.

I always remembered it being Labour Day weekend.
Formula E is coming to Vancouver. But we need an Indycar race in western Canada FFS. Someone build a circuit in the Fraser Valley somewhere. One that can have an Indy race and then an F1 race in the future.

A shame how residential areas complained about the races in Vancouver being to loud and congest the area on race day. My cousin for one purpose, purchased an apartment suite (concord pacific) near main, cambie Pacific st, for the reason knowing the races are held annually there so he can have front seats from the view in his building. Bastardly people of Vancouver how could you do this to your city. This event generated money and revenue for land\property owners like my cousin. Part of the reason why I dislike ppl who complain for the interest of none other than their own. I pitty you Vancouver overcrowded good for nothing city. Learn from cities like Toronto and Montreal where they appreciate entertainment and enthusiasts.

Zanardi should have been disqualified and suspended for taking Herta out while a lap down. Then he blames Herta, who doesn't need to leave room for lapped cars in a non passing place.

Hugo Psx they have referred to Bourdais as a four time champion before. This is a united series now. Max Papis is one of the officials, right next to Arie.
