Those double 8's on that reg didn't represent the late 80's. And if you think about it logically, I grow up in the place and most of the people that had 88c cars drove them in the early 90's and so on cuz hardly anyone could afford a new car. So would you say this film looks like it was filmed in the 90's? I don't think so very much. I remember the 90's in cork very well.
John Haynes the video shows cars driving over Eamon de Valera and Michael Collins bridges. They weren't built until 83/84. The 88 C reg on the cars did mean they were registered in 1988.
As a Corkman living in Dublin since 1994 I love all these old videos, and even if it was the late 80's and not the late 70's I still get homesick watching it.
Whether it was the 70's or 80's doesn't matter much to me. The video still brings back happy memories of the year that I was blessed to live in Cork City -- one of the greatest places on the fact of the earth at that time!
Tim Ward I agree completely. I don’t live yet in Cork but I had the great opportunity to make an internship in Cork. Since the first day, I love Cork and the people I miss cork a lot !! And Cork is indeed one of the best places in the world. Soon I will be living there
This documentary late 1980s footage as the Merchants Quay Centre is also featured which was not opened until 1988 after demolition of many derelict buildings on the old Merchants Quay. The anchor tenants would be Roches Stores department store including their new modern Supermarket along with Marks & Spencer and Dunnes Stores. Later Roches Stores would hand over Supermarket to Caulfield McCarthy who operate SuperValu while Debenhams now lease from Roches. Merchant Street off Patrick Street gone!
I love that this is not a romanticized "come look at me!" type video. It's the hardworking, grist and grizzle of the people who worked and lived in Cork. Love the music. So it seems it is the 1980's late, as everyone is shouting! I love it all the same. Cork has much history in the making of the Republic of Ireland. Many, Many HEROS! Thanks for uploading, as I probably will never get to see the beautiful City of Cork.
I love this video I have watched it many times, being born in 1997 I wish I had been around to see it all. Much more simple time in life & all the old trains buses and trucks that I love. Love the music would like to know who sings the first few songs? Would like to do a video like this in 2016 but you need to have eyes everywhere to prevent some scumbag robbing you. How the place has changed.
I was born in 1965 and I'm so glad that I caught the end of the 'good old days'. On the other hand, you have your whole life ahead of you, so lucky you. I also am a fan of retro buses, trams, cars, trucks, etc.
Interesting - a video about Cork in the 70s and someone sees a hasbara opportunity to make a plug for 'Irish War Guilt + the Jews'....... every country has its bright and dark bits - Israel isn't doing so well in publicity stakes these days. Maybe you could write a few words about how many Syrian refugees Israel has taken in since the start of that war? and what did the Jews do for the Irish when we were under the heel of the British boot since the Tudor plantation? How much did they contribute to Famine relief when a million people or more starved to death outside the doors of their mud cabins? How many did they help when millions of Irish were forced to emigrate in coffin ships to a life of hardship? Where were they when the 1798 rebels were slaughtered like cattle by artillery on Vinegar Hill - women and children mostly.
@@patrickball2493 True, I noticed that. I mentioned it in another comment further down, a year or two ago, after noticing the mullets (both in the Lee and on the heads of the feens lining the bridge) and car regs showing 88 C etc. Happy Christmas!
1988 approx. I was at least 10 years old when this was filmed....makes my heart hurt a lot. Been living away now for 11 years and just last night I had such a vivid dream of what it felt like returning home for good. Man my heart is fucking hurting. I wonder how possible it is....for an expat like me to become me again.
having spent a week in Cork this summer, I can definitely confirm that - way to promote a city, ha. Cork's a gorgeous place to live and I am actually looking for ways to make that happen in the (near) future.
Yeah and you can notice Marks and Spencer's also which was built in the early 80's if I remember but I really don't care. It's great seeing the home I grew up in back then. I remember also having to do Irish dancing whilst attending The North Mon to that first tune :)
I remember the No.2, No.3 and No.8 buses being jam packed in the winter and the windows fogged up. So happy that I had No.5 as an option as it used to be virtually empty :) The lads at 18:35…I wonder what kind of reaction you'd get from the youth of today if you were filming out and about.
I live in cork came through the 70s And gang's used to take out each others eye's with stanley knives And fought each other with motorcycle chain's And razor's sewn in to lapel's ,yep lovely time I have to say
Irish Rail ( or Iarnród Éireann) did not come into being until 1987 as a separate company from parent holding company CIE (Córas Iompair Éireann) as far as I recall. The same year Bus Éireann and Dublin Bus were also born. The opening showed Cork station in the Irish Rail logo which was simply CIE for both Rail and Buses all over the Republic of Ireland during the 1970s.
Interesting footage - is it yours? But I don't think it's the 70s - there are car regs from at least 1988, and Merchant's Quay was still a line of mouldering old buildings when I was young (in the 70s). The refurbishment you see in the video was carried out in the 80s. Plus the fashions - mullets still in evidence, white socks (a no-no in many discos at the time). At 13:40 we see a group of lads line the bridge - a common sight in years gone by. Usually they all had polaroid sunglasses, to cut the glare on the water and see if any salmon were passing by..... I don't know if that's what's happening here, maybe just enjoying the sparkling waters ona sunny day. The city skyline has changed dramatically since this was filmed.
Definitely no earlier than the late 1980s. Apart from the 1988 reg cars mentioned by some earlier posters, there's even a pub called The Joshua Tree which has gotta be named after the U2 album rather than the California tree. U2 were mega then, and the album was released in 1987, so a film no earlier than 1988
10 mins 31 sec into this film i see a ford sierra. The Ford Sierra was a large family car that was built by Ford Europe from 1982 to 1993. It was designed by Uwe Bahnsen, Robert Lutz and Patrick le Quément. The code used during development was "Project Toni".[citation needed]
I'm just after finding out that the first song (instrumental) is the melody of a popular Irish children's song called 'An bhfaca tú mo Shéamuisín'. There is a good rendition of it by Na Casadaigh (The Cassidys) on UA-cam :-)
Defo 1988 or 1989 because merchants quay looks like being built and was built in 1988.most of all there are several cars registered 88-C which means 1988??
There's no way that's the '70s at the beginning judging by the hair styles and fashion. Looks more like late '80s. Plus, how many people had a video camera in the '70s?
No video camcorders in the 70's was obviously not shot on film. Than again the 88 C reg gives it a way. No matter what you could try and do, even if you had a 4k camera you couldn't make a city or large town look good in Ireland in the 80's. Except for small villages and the countryside the place was a dump. You'd know the NCT didn't exist.
Saw two 88-C cars in this film. They were quite rare in the 70s !!!
Those double 8's on that reg didn't represent the late 80's. As Niall Tobin said "Cork people love their city so much, they even feel homseick when they are living in it"

Its late 1988 as Merchant's Quay is nearing completion- that opened in early 1989
Aye, late 80's, I spent a bit of time in Cork around this time, fond memories.
Great step back in time. Thanks.
At 13:52 that was me in my wine coloured capri with my girlfriend 😂 car reg was 8649PI
