Walmart pays about 48 cents per shirt from Bangladesh. Even if we have 100% tariff on that, it comes out to about $1. That's still isn't going to allow the US to produce shirts in the US. One we don't have the infrastructure and second, in order to create a factory in the US and then make a shirt in the us, it is now estimated to cost about $29 to make a shirt in the US. And it'll probably be about 10 years before we start making profits on that shirt. After 10 years we could probably drop the price to about $19 a shirt and still have a profit. That's not what the store will be charging, that's what the manufacturer will be charging. How does a $19 especially $29 shirt compete against a $1 shirt?

I have read some economists from Australia about Trump. What they have worried was not about the war in the middle east. For them, as long as the war doesn't go to other countries, should be controllable. What they worry was if the USA gives tariffs to China and its supporters, the global south will give high tariffs to the USA and European, especially the natural resources. For global south, the lesser they sell their natural resources, the more expensive those resources are.

It's a serious misconception to believe those are mutually exclusive. It doesn't actually cost us much to deter violations of sovereignty around the world. Our foreign spending as a % of DGP as decreased pretty significantly over the last 50 years, and our people have not been treated much, if any, better. We are given illusions of choice because they are powerful campaign tools. Trump ran on "putting america first", deporting immigrants, issuing tariffs, pulling us out of wars, etc. He is trading some tens of billions of foreign aid for a $300B plan to deport illegal immigrants while also reducing taxes. I can assure you there will be no money leftover to spend on infrastructure, healthcare, education, homelessness, etc. A good administration would implement progressive taxes, possibly a carbon tax, not give tax cuts to the rich, and spend money on our people while continuing our international presence. Whether you agree with my views or not, our foreign spend is not a strain on our economy in any real way, and it is incredibly, incredibly important to the livelihood of people across the world. China's export to the U.S. is a small percentage of its GDP. If the U.S. just cuts off trade with China, then 200% of zero is zero. So China's getting back Taiwan for free.

Walmart pays about 48 cents per shirt from Bangladesh. Even if we have 100% tariff on that, it comes out to about $1. That's still isn't going to allow the US to produce shirts in the US. One we don't have the infrastructure and second, in order to create a factory in the US and then make a shirt in the us, it is now estimated to cost about $29 to make a shirt in the US. And it'll probably be about 10 years before we start making profits on that shirt. After 10 years we could probably drop the price to about $19 a shirt and still have a profit. That's not what the store will be charging, that's what the manufacturer will be charging. How does a $19 especially $29 shirt compete against a $1 shirt?
Sadly when you have a "genius" like Trump or anything else, nothing will make any sense. Why?

My international business trading college professor said that Walmart used to pay $.07 per plain white or black t-shirt coming from China. He said this was the going rate for plain t-shirts coming from China about 15-17 years ago when he was an active business dealer! Walmart sold those $.07 t-shirts for $5 at huge profits! He said Walmart bought those t-shirts by the tons! They didn’t even bother to count them!

I don't think the idea is to incentivize cheap textile manufacturers to move to the US. I think the idea is to move high tech goods and raw resources extraction back to the US.
If you cared about the environment you should support this. US ecological protections are much better than China and our factories and raw resource extraction operations are far cleaner. That's not to mention that the US doesn't exploit $lave labor to manufacturer goods like China does.
