  • A look around East Grinstead station during 1968/'69, a period when the old LB&SCR low level station building was still in use and the everyday 3D and 3H diesel-electric multiple units and BRCW type 3 (later designated class 33) locomotives were changing from green to blue.

Great pictures! Looking at remains of East Grinstead station today, it's hard to imagine what it was like when the high level platforms, station buildings and sidings were all there.

In 1966 i moved from Thornaby motive power depot to Norwood jct motive power depot as a driver. I remember some of the driving turns to East Grinstead Victoria and London Bridge. One in particular is we went light engine early in the morning to Tonbridge Wells West and the worked a passenger train to London Bridge via East Grinstead

Agreed, I was just checking on Google Earth to understand the layout of the junction and the connection between the low and high levels. It's still possible to see the old railway paths in the lines of trees and the road layout.

It really annoyed me when BR removed the lovely railway station buildings. What for ???

Absolutely agree. The concrete replacement was awful and the replacement for that is nowhere near as attractive as the original.

If I can remember they split midway somewhere with the rear three coaches to Dorman , Lingfield , and East Grinstead.

Some trains split at Oxted but this varied over the years/day of week.

Interesting seeing the wrap round yellow ends. Great pix. Oh and the jumper cables.

The viaduct at East Grinstead was Imberhorne, not Copyhold.

You are correct. I just have got into the bad habit of calling it Copyhold Viaduct because my late mother-in-law was born/lived there and it was always referred to as Copyhold Viaduct by her family (and presumably others). It is also known as Hill Place Viaduct.
