I went to Iceland once and realized I had forgotten a jacket/sweater. Walking around in a t-shirt didn't last long; bought an Icelandic sweater...which I drunkenly lost in Germany a couple years later. Second time to Iceland, much better prepared. Third time I go, I hope to never leave.

I can't believe I'm looking for hours everyday at videos in 2023 on places to move out of the US. Things are getting so scary in the US and I'm terrified. I'm trying to figure out every way possible right now to leave the US. Its not safe anymore so I'm glad I found ur channel to help me a bit. I was really considering trying for denmark or iceland. I just wanna move as soon as I can before things get worse. Even if I move and I'm broke at least I could work on it and be safe

Just a note on the 6 month rule for getting into the Healthcare and benefit system that does not just apply to foreign nationals but also Icelandic citizens that have had a legal residence out side Iceland for more than 18 months. I am an Icelander but have lived in the UK for 17 years so if I were to move back to Iceland I would be in the same situation as any foreign national it would take me 6 months to get back into the system

I live in North Dakota which is dark, dry, and cold in the winter so I might give a look to some of these!
Also a side note: I think living in North Dakota is a pretty ok place to get the gist of somewhere as cold and at times dangerous weather of Iceland. North Dakota has incredible storms that can easily rip off large branches off trees and lots of windy days.
Every time I've taken a look at Iceland, it's been seeming a better and better place to live. I just wish I could.

Very helpful and useful information! I have made powerpoints trying to organize this information for myself, it is so complicated :( ! I do wish you included what types of visas would contribute to permanent residency and what permits do not go towards it- like the shortage of workers and (some) of the educational visas, the time spent does not go towards attaining permanent residency (to my knowledge) but the skilled worker time spent in Iceland *would* go towards perm. residency.. But that is focused more on residency status and not the actual act of just moving there! Lol. I'm working towards a geoscience degree in geology now and getting work experience in a similar field, and when finished with my B.S. hope to either find work right away or maybe get continued education at Iceland School of Energy.. I chose this field of study after being told it was a high demand job there, and the geothermal and hydro plants are truly incredible! I just hope things work out and immigrating permanently will even be possible in a few years. My partner and I visit annually and this is my life goal and what drives me to keep going each day. I practice Icelandic through mobile apps, books, and online programs but it is so challenging not to be immersed with media, people, and the language daily. Do you have any further suggestions for language lessons, maybe a specific online tutoring program or series? :) Your videos motivate me and bring comfort in knowing that immigrating IS possible for us Americans, even if it is waaay more of a PIA than if we had EU member status! Thank you for sharing your experiences with us, I am obsessed with your vids and been binging your content for days! Sending warm vibes from sunny south Florida

As an Australian citizen I'm really surprised that Iceland only seems to be as expensive as Australia (depending on where you live). Fuel, rent and even salaries are very similar. The tax rates are similar but there is no tax free threshold (in Australia you can earn $18,000 tax free) so I would probably pay more tax overall, not sure by how much. It's weird to me because Iceland is framed is being EXTREMELY expensive which is something I've just believed however it seems that as an Australian, I would find it normal- maybe a little bit pricier but not noticeably. It also puts into context our comparatively (compared to US in particular) high minimum wage which relative to cost of living is not very high at all.

Much of the financial information you are sharing is very similar to the Netherlands... Where I lived for around 10 years and I was born in ...my dad left because the NL because taxes were so high... My dad was a six-figure earner and could not see giving almost half of his income to the government. He moved to the US in the 70s. We do travel there periodically on vacation.
And btw, I learned Dutch...sometimes the worst American in another country is a linguistically unintergrated one, in my opinion.... I still speak it with friends and family over WhatsApp.
I'm a Dutch citizen, living in the US. It would be interesting to know if that makes moving to other Schengen countries easier.

How do you find working at an ad agency in Iceland? I work in advertising in the States, and I’ve always been curious about working at agencies in other countries. Specifically wondering what the culture is like around working hours...here as I’m sure you know it’s not unusual to be expected to work around the clock and fairly often on weekends. Thanks again for all the great info!

Thanks for the question. An Icelandic friend of mine recommended me for the job at the ad agency. The working hours could get crazy at the agency. Not my cup of tea.

HI JULES! CONGRATULATIONS on your award ! How Cool 🌷 You mention you didnt speak the Icelandic language when you first moved to Iceland but you went right to work . In your job is English spoken ? In another video of yours you mentioned English is not widely spoken . I think thats what you said ...just wondered . Have a great day 😀

    • @AllThingsIceland

      Thanks!
English is widely spoken here but it is not unusual for the communication at a work place to be done completely in Icelandic.
I was fortunate that my specific job required English but I would get multiple emails a day from people in the office in Icelandic and our big company meetings would also be in Icelandic.

Is it just me . As an American we never think about "leaving" the United States. Like it's not even an option. A thought we never have as Americans like there's something wrong with us if we leave if we even think about leaving. We are declared Traitors or not Patriotic . Something's really wrong with that. Just noticing our thinking is weird. People in Europe travel to other Country's all the time even move to other Country's. We are also as Americans taught Travel is for the Rich only. I'm seeing something's wrong with the way we think.

I think it's more about a fact that Americans are raised with those fancy phrases "land of dreams" and"best country in the world" from a young age and that made everyone think that they can never find happiness and succeed outside the US
